i Durham Region Hosts Executives Bowlathon Raises Funds for Big Sisters Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 5,1984 3 ïiïsm As part of its efforts to promote export trade, the Economic Development Department of Durham Region is hosting a tour of Malaysian Business Executives Executives on August 30,1984. The North - South Institute in Ottawa has issued a valuable valuable reminder of the Asia - Pacific market potential. At the present time the dollar volume of trade with Asia - Pacific developing countries (excluding Japan) is small compared with our trade with the United States and Western Europe but in terms of its growth potential the importance importance of the trade is not to be underestimated. In the period 1970 to 1982, our total exports to the United States and Western Europe have decreased while exports to the developing Asia-Pacific area have doubled. During the same period the percentage share of Canada's manufactured manufactured exports going to industrialized industrialized countries declined at an average annual rate of .6 percent whereas the percentage percentage share of such exports to the developing countries increased increased at an average rate of • five percent. In recognizing this trend, the Economic Development Department is pleased to be able to bring the Business Executives into the Region for a day long promotional tour. The Business Executives are hand selected from a large number of applications by the Office of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. They are extremely well connected in business United way ~\r ventures in Malaysia and are seeking trade contacts in Canada as well as insight into our way of manufacturing. The August 30th itinerary centers around a number of significant features in the Region including the General Motors plant, the Nuclear Generating Stations, several construction projects as well as Parkwood Estates. In co-operation with the Economic Development Department of the City of Oshawa, the Region's objective objective is to portray Durham Region as a modern and growing growing community so that when the visitors return to their homeland they will have a very positive feeling towards Durham Region and its member municipalities. Feedback Feedback from the tours in previous previous years suggests that long term relationships are established established during these tours. Commissioner of Economic Development, Gerard Ger- vais, explained that a followup followup to one day tour will involve written communication with industries in the area outlining the business interests of the Malaysian visitors and inviting inviting them to contact these business executives through the Economic Development Department. At the same time, each visitor to the Region will receive a complete complete list of the manufacturing companies in the area which outlines the products manufactured. manufactured. An attempt will then be made to link the Malaysian's Malaysian's with a local manufacturing manufacturing company for the exchange exchange of information and hopefully goods or services in the future. The day-long tour is to culminate with a dinner - reception at Cullen Gardens which is to be attended by all area Mayors and the private sector participants in the daylong daylong program.
