A good crowd in attendance at the delicious pancake breakfast, held on Saturday morning, at the new fireball, Cobb Hill. Tasty sausages, pancakes, maple syrup and coffee, more than satisfied, the hungry patrons. This annual event is sponsored by the local firemen and is always enjoyed by those present. Mrs. James Sutherland, her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Trull and Janet, Bethany, have returned home after enjoying a two week trip to Port Hardy, Vancouver Island, and also enjoying a trip to Butcshard Gardens, and Banff. Best Fair Ever The excited comments of Durham Central Exhibition Manager, Mr. George Carson - "It certainly was one of the very best we've ever had, and we were certainly fortunate in having such lovely, sunny weather, in spite of the dire predictions of the weather man. The crowds were up somewhat from last year, and Sunday's pari-mutual betting was a bit higher than last year. The cattle shows were all above average and the beef sections were of exceptional quality. In the sheep snow of Sunday, there were 12 breeders breeders competing.. There were 22 floats and a total of 54 entries, with the 0. P.P. Pipe Band leading off! Bowmanville Sea Cadets, bicycles built for two, old cars and old tractors, old fire engines, Clarke High School band and many individuals in quaint costumes. The parade route went down Main Street and then up Station Street to the fair grounds, where the floats were judged in front of the grandstand. Prize winners as follows: 1. In a report to the general purpose committee Tuesday, Tuesday, Fire Chief Jim Aldridge Aldridge pointed out that an existing drain at the fire station tends to freeze during during the winter and this causes a blockage. ' When fire trucks are washed, water freezes on the apparatus floor, creating creating a slippery, hazardous condition for firefighters. The chief recommended that the problem be corrected corrected at a cost of $4,600. This price includes the design design and installation of the better drainage system. We recently received a letter from Mrs. Sandra Morton, advising us about the work of Durham Region Horseback Riding for the Handicapped Association. The Association provides riding lessons for persons with mental and-or physical handicaps, handicaps, thus providing a therapeutic therapeutic as well as a recreational recreational activity. Their sixth annual Ride-A-Thon will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22,1984, from Hoskin Stables in Blackstock. Experienced riders with their own horses are sought for this fund-raising event. Mr. Fred Glanville, who drives the garbage truck in the village, had the misfor- tunate accident of breaking his leg. United Way The "1984" Oshawa-Whitby- Newcastle United Way Campaign will officially begin with the volunteer canvasser's luncheon to be held on Monday, September 17th, 1984, at the General Sikorski Polish Veterans Hall, Stevenson Rd. North, Oshawa. The guest speaker for the luncheon will be Miss Barbara Copp, Executive Director of the Y.W.C. A., Oshawa. Prior to becoming Director of the Y in 1970, Miss Copp held the position as a University Instructor in Seoul, South Korea. In 1983, Miss Copp served as a delegate to the Y.W.C.A. World Council in Singapore. As the Executive Director of one of the 38 member agencies of the Whitby/Oshawa/ Newcastle United Way, Miss Copp will provide valuable insight to those present at the luncheon of the many services offered by your United Way.
