6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 12,1984 Section Two YELVERTON NEWS (Intended for last week) Several local producers joined the busload of Victoria Victoria County Pork Producers Producers who sponsored a bus trip to Toronto Stadium on Sunday afternoon to see the Blue Jays. The dubious weather was more than compensated for by a Blue Jay win. Well another "paper" anniversary anniversary has rolled around for your Yelverton scribe and we begin another year of questionable reporting for our community with ad libs for free. On Monday evening it was our pleasure to be among the 22,000 paying guests present to hear the concert at the Toronto Exhibition grandstand. On this occasion occasion Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and his wife Jessie Coulter combined combined with Willie Nelson and his band to provide a five hour interlude of their particular brand of music. It was particularly gratifying gratifying to see the whole grandstand grandstand rise to give Willie a standing ovation at the completion completion of the evening's entertainment. entertainment. Mrs. Pamela Carmichael and Crystal Marian returned returned home to Moranville, Alberta on Wednesday after spending the past several several weeks with her parents, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stinson, and other relatives in this area. Mr. Howard Malcolm returned returned home on Sunday evening from a week's sojourn in Singapore. Howard Howard has added a new dimension dimension to his many faceted personality, that of a "travelling salesman." In his capacity as a member of Canagrex, Howard accompanied accompanied by two or three other chaps made this trip to Singapore to promote the sale of pork in that independent independent city. They met with around forty individuals or groups who are potential customers for this commodity. commodity. With a population of 2Vi million (approximately the same as Toronto), and little local production, the opportunity opportunity for sales is realistic provided Canada can compete compete with other export countries. Howard was the only bona fide producer making the trip from Canada. Canada. Singapore is now an independent independent city which was for a while, a partner with a Malaysian group of countries countries from which it later withdrew. Howard had an opportunity to visit neighboring neighboring Malaysia and was in Hong Kong en route home. Singapore is very hot and humid, situated as it. is so near the equator, located between Sumatra and Borneo. Borneo. In an effort to allay any fears that might have surfaced surfaced this week by members, members, supporters, and employees employees of United Cooperatives Cooperatives of Ontario with the surprise announcement on August 27th that U.C.O. had filed for protection under the Companies' Creditors' Arrangement Act in order to obtain time to complete a reorganization of its financial financial affairs prior to Sept. 30th, 1984. We submit the following: Mr. Justice Houlden of the Supreme Court of Ontario has appointed appointed Price Waterhouse Ltd. with Mr. Garth Mac Gerr acting on their behalf as Administrator of a proposed proposed plan which will be later submitted to the creditors creditors for their approval. Failure over the past several several months to get the three major creditors and the two levels of government in accord accord over a financial reorganization reorganization plan left little other option that the one taken. U.C.O. has assets of over 165 million with revenues revenues of over 500 M per annum and currently employs employs over 1300 employees. It has 98 retail locations (such as Lindsay, Fcnelon. Falls, Woodville and Beaverton), five central feed plants such as the one in Peterborough operates by far the largest livestock commission firm at Toronto Stockyards, has a grain terminal terminal at Windsor and a distribution distribution centre at Meadow- vale. Unlike most companies companies of this size it is owned not by an international international company or large family interest, blit rather by 49,000 direct member- owners users - another 39,000 indirect members through its 46 member cooperatives such as Peterborough Peterborough District and Durham Farmers ofOrono. The Cooopcrative movement movement originated in the early 1900s in Ontario because there was a definite need for farmers to band together together to protect their own interests. In 1948 it was incorporated incorporated by a special act of the Ontario Legislature. Two questions of prime concern concern to all arc -- "Is U.C.O. in Receivership or gone into Bankruptcy?" The answer answer is a resounding "No!" Aftcryears of modest financial financial success, operating losses were experienced in 1981 and again in '82 and '83. U.C.O. was a victim of over- expansion in those good years in the seventies, Ser vices and facilities which were demanded by our members and were provided provided where the need was considered the greatest on borrowed money -- short term interest loans. Like many farmers, particularly the beginning farmer, it also fell into the interest fluctuating trap that caught our company trying to operate operate with borrowed money with interest rates that more than doubled in a very short time. At no time in history history were these circumstances circumstances ever experienced experienced before -- or hopefully hopefully will be again. As the farm population prospers or suffers, so does its cooperative as do implement implement companies and other support industries. Mr. Garth MacGerr of Price Waterhouse has indicated indicated that "he will do everything everything possible to keep operations operations running smoothly" that "there are ample funds to pay employees' wages, to pay our suppliers." Farmers Farmers delivering grain and livestock to U.C.O. will also be fully protected. In fact, despite the current inconvenience, inconvenience, the axiom "business "business as usual" is the one being pursued. It is expected expected that the eventual plan of compromise or arrangement arrangement will very closely resemble the informal restructuring restructuring plan that has been hammered out during lengthy major negotiating sessions with major lenders and governments over the past several months. Hopefully Hopefully our cooperative will emerge from the current adversity adversity a much stronger entity entity (and much wiser) than ever before. The continued support of our farmer user member at this time will be an essential element to its steady recovery. Miss Mona Malcolm, having having completed her term of summer employment at the Royal Bank at Neilson and Ellesmere in Toronto, has returned home to Malconia prior to entering Waterloo University in another week's time. Visitors scheduled to spent some time at Malconia Malconia this long weekend are Mr. and Mrs. Roy Werry and Karen of Sudbury and Louis and Elizabeth Nasato of Port Credit. Another more unusual visitor dropped in literally, on Saturday morning -- a blue heron was out stretching stretching its legs beside the swimming swimming pool. Last night we were again awakened b/ a coyote chorus from néarby fields. No, this is not Metro Zoo! Speaking of a zoo, the election will soon be over, thank goodness! We're getting getting tired of hearing what every political party is prepared prepared to do with our tax dollars. dollars. Congratulations to Mr. Murray Malcolm on the safe arrival of a new grandson courtesy of daughter Darlene Darlene and hubby Doug Moran of Edmonton, Alberta, this past week. The guest speaker at our Yelverton United Church's anniversary to be held on Sept. 16th at 11 a.m. is tentatively tentatively United Church Minister Minister from Fenelon Falls Rev. Peter Twaddle. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gray and family of the Gray Lane spent the weekend at a friend's cottage on the Moira River near Marmora. Mrs. Gwen Gray has coached the local Junior ball team to a successful season by being the top team in the season's play. On Tuesday evening the winning team in the playoffs will be decided between between Gwen's Yelverton and area team and a Monaghan team at the Yelverton Yelverton Ball Park. Guess we'll have to rechristen the park by a new name. What could be more appropriate under the circumstances for a name than the "Charlie "Charlie McCullough Memorial Park?" That would get our vote! Miss Betty Whittaker returned returned to her Hamilton home on Monday following a week's holiday with niece Eileen Malcolm. Candy Malcolm spent the weekend with her parents and called on several of her friends in the area. Pleased to report that Mr. Jim Gray is expected home this week from the Peterborough Peterborough Civic Hospital where he has spent the past couple of weeks. Sunday School under the able supervision of Superintendent Hazel Gray is opening Sunday, Sept. 9th for the fall and winter season, season, On Sept, 14 the Youth Group of the Janelville charge arc sponsoring the Revelation Riders at Janct- villc United Church, This is Christian Motorcycle Youth Group (not to be confused with Satan's Choice), which puts on variety shows of a gospel nature. Congratulations to the Janelville Jr. Girls' ball team who won the trophy for this area in the final games of the season. Gloria and Mary McCullough played with the Janelville team this season.
