HAYDON Club 21 ladies gathered at the Community Centre Monday, September 10th for their meeting. Mrs. Eileen Blackburn acting as chairlady for group 3 opened the meeting meeting with two poems, "Inner Life" and "It Wouldn't be fall" and expressed her pleasure pleasure of seeing so many ladies out. Secretary B. Jones read the June report and had it approved and read a card from Meta Kellar. Treasurer Bev Cochrane reported on our July 2nd Salad supper and Meta Swain also reported on more of the expenses of the supper. Our Community Sale has been postponed to October 13th and since it will be mostly a bake sale although some of the ladies hoped a few veggies and plants would still be available. Most of the business had to do with the sale. A 50 - 50 draw will be carried out that night and will be attended to by Mrs, Gladys Potts. Clerking by Mrs. M. Swain and the Treasurers are to be Mrs. Val Lloyd and Mrs. Jan Mayer. Helpers at the bake table are to be Mrs. Betty Roth, Mrs. Jean Slemon, Mrs. Gwen Banks and Mrs. Blanche Jones. We hope our young men will deliver the goodies to the buyers. Other tickets to be sold by Mrs. J. Trewin, Mrs. Dorie Christensen and Mrs. Ruby Trewin. Several ladies offered to do telephoning. Mrs. Kay Buttery asked about a catering job and will report back. She also brought to our attention the Work Shop at the Agriculture Board Office on Tuesday and Wednesday Oct. 16 and 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mrs. Bev Cochrane and Mrs. Val Lloyd have agreed to take the course in Mat Braiding Braiding on Tues., Oct. 16. We decided to hold a Hallowe'en Party on Oct. 27 which by now we know the date must by changed - but that can be agreed on in our October meeting. Jan Mayer offered to prepare and deliver flyers, advertising our party and also agreed to buying prizes and decorating. We imagine she'll expect some help. More plans will be made at the next meeting. Mrs. Jean Garrard had a delightful reading "A Pity Men aren't under guarantee to have their defects repaired." And Mrs. Bev Cochrane had a reading which is only too true "Verbal Diet." For more entertainment we rounded out the meeting by playing Court Whist after which group 3 served a delicious delicious lunch. Miss Cora Degeer accompanied accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Jack Jones on Friday afternoon and visited with Mr. Jim Jones Student Praises Terry Fox Youth Centre X M ^ According to Geoff Green, a Grade 13 student at Clarke High School, a one-week trip to the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre is worth a lifetime of experience. This is the sentiment of over 3,000 young Canadians who participated in the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre Program in its inaugural inaugural year. The Centre is a permanent permanent residential conference conference complex which offers a one-week program of Canadian studies geared toward toward 16 and 17-year-old students. students. One enthusiastic participant participant of the government project was Newcastle resident resident Geoff Green, presently a grade 13 student at Clarke high School. In his visit to the Rotary Club luncheon Thursday, September 13, Geoff discussed discussed the objectives of the centre and the unlimited benefits that it offers Canadian Canadian youths; both academically academically and socially. "It helps young people to learn more about the and Mrs. Meta Kellar at Oshawa. On Sunday, Ian and Cheryl Graham and boys took their Old Car meaning their Stude- baker to the Car Show at Port Hope. Craig, Darren and Leslie Graham entered their model cars in the contest and Leslie was a winner by bringing home a trophy nearly half as big as he is. No remarks as to how well Dad did on his car. The idea behind the centre which is located in Ottawa was to create a means of developing a spirit of understanding and brotherhood among Canadians Canadians of all backgrounds. "There were kids there from the North West Territories, Territories, Vancouver, Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Quebec; just everywhere," explained Geoff, "but we all got along great; everyone seemed to appreciate each other's differences differences and learn from one another." The speaker went on to explain that studies at the centre are offered in both official languages with the central theme of all programs programs being Canadian institutions. institutions. These highlight Canadian governmental, judicial, and cultural institutions institutions and include visits to the Supreme Court, the Senate, the House of Commons, Commons, and one or more of the National Capital's cultural cultural centres. The six weekly themes that are offered on a rotational rotational basis include Arts and Culture, Science and Technology, Canadian Studies, Natural Resources and the Environment, Economy Economy and Law. Gëoff attended the centre in May 1984, and spent the week with 140 students from across the country. The program is offered over a 26-week period between September 16,1984 and May 11,1985. Each week the participants participants arrive at the Centre on Sunday and return return home the following Saturday. "Even though we had only known each other for a short time, everyone was walking around with kleenex in their hand when we had to say good-bye," Geoff recalled. The cost for a one-week stay at the Terry Fox Canadian Canadian Youth Centre is $250 which. Of this money, $200 should be a community portion portion which could be funded totally or in part by community community organizations. The remaining remaining $50 is a non-re- fundable registration fee to paid by the applicant. Monies going toward Geoffs valued trip to Ottawa Ottawa were raised by the Rotary Club of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, a gesture for which the student was more than grateful. In closing, the youth stressed stressed the importance of urging urging students like himself to participate in the program. "I still receive about five or six letters a week from friends that I had made at the Terry Fox Centre. Some of my friends from the program program have even come to visit me," said Geoff." "I don't think that I have found any trip more worthwhile worthwhile than this one," he added. "It's something that shouldn't be missed."
