Challis, announces this week, the official opening of his new headquarters in the large Cities Service Building on King Street, Bowmanville. Bobby Pearce, world champion sculler and Alf Shrubb, world champion marathon runner, were guest speakers at the A.Y.P.A. of St. John's Anglican Church, Athletic Night Meeting, last week. Mr. John C. Kirkwood will begin a new series "Your World and Mine" for the Canadian Statesman, starting next week. The Bowmanville Opera House was filled to capacity last week to see the Lady Minstrels staged by the Concession East Group of Trinity Women's Association. Between acts Douglas Rackham presented several song and tap dancing routines. 25 Years Ago Thursday, October 12th, 1959 Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Neal, Orchard Park, New York, were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Dipped. Miss Evelyn Luxton, R.C.A.F. Station, St. John's, Quebec, spent the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. N. Luxton. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Rigg and Caroline spent the weekend in Brockville with her parents. At the Southview Golf Course last Saturday, the first round ended in a tie which necessitated another playoff round which was won by the team of Ted Hoar, Tim Cox, Bill Laskaris, and Butch Cole. Second place winner was Ted Dadson, Don Masters, Paul Chant and "Snuffy" Hunt. Third place winners were Maxie Yourth, Frank Mohun, Ted Fairey and Mel Burgess. Mrs. Nelson E. Osborne and Mrs. Ralph "Ames were delegates to the annual meeting of the Ontario March of Dimes, held Monday, at the Westbury Hotel, Toronto. 10 Years Ago Wednesday, October 25,1971 A grant in the amount of $6,113 has been awarded to the Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club, and will involve 200 persons, by the Hon. J.H. Faulkner M.P., on behalf of the Hon. Marc Lalonde, under the New Horizons program. Mrs. Queenie Fletcher and Mrs. Olive Henderson, of Newtonville, are attending the Leaders' Training Course in Bowmanville, sponsored by the Departm Agriculture. On Monday afU Bowmanville Kii President Marilyn Web. and Vice President Don, Fairy presented the club't. $100 donation to the Santa Claus parade treasurer D.R. Allen. Ted Puk was awarded the Oshawa Green Gaels Junior Lacrosse Most Valuable Player Award at the annual dinner held in Oshawa on Saturday. Sik Keung Chow, 50 King Street and Mrs. Astrid Storgaard, 16 Little Avenue, Bowmanville, were presented with their Canadian Citizen certificates at Citizen Court, Whitby, last week. Newcastle To Observe Addiction Awareness October 21 to October 28 has officially been named Addiction Addiction Awareness Week. The municipalities of Ajax, Newcastle, Oshawa, Pickering, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby will be offering special programs during this week- long event. The concept was developed by The Alcohol Recovery Homes Association of Ontario and the idea is rapidly spreading spreading throughout the province. Its purpose is to increase public awareness about. the nature and extent of addictions addictions by providing information on existing resources for education, prevention, treatment treatment and recovery. Plans are being made to place displays in various major shopping centres during this week with people on hand to answer questions and give referrals if needed. Over the next few months, volunteers from churches, industries, service clubs, social services and the medical profession will work towards consciousness raising of this serious problem. A Speakers Bureau is being set up and made available to all interested groups. Almost everyone knows of a person with an addiction, be it alcohol, smoking, food, drugs, even work and they need support and encouragement. Make sure they get the best available. Addiction Awareness Awareness Week, October 21 to 28. Fitness Fare Holds First Meeting Recently ELIZABETHVILLE NEWS (Intended for last week) The seniors had an extra good crowd turn-out on Thursday and bingo was held in the evening by the Lions Club. The 4-H club "Fitness Fare" held its first meeting on Thursday evening at Mr. and Mrs. McClean's home. They expect to have 17 members and the leaders are Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Long and Mrs. McClean. Mr. Yakiwchuk, Lisa and friend J. Bull, spent the last weekend in Algonquin Park, camping. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert White, Regina, Saskatchewan, spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. J. Peacock recently. On Saturday, Mr. Ballans' auction was held. There was a large crowd attending with something for everyone. Mr. and Mrs. Ballans are moving to Colborne. They have sold their home here, the old W.II. Beatty homestead. Church services were held as usual. Rev. G. Rutherford spoke on the life of Ilaggai, and of how he kept warning the people to fix up the temple like their homes and cease their sinning. The choir sang two anthems that they were planning to sing at Bcthesda in the evening. Misses Cook and Smith look up the offering. Announcements: October 5 workshop entitled Justice in Corrections to be held at Warkworth United Church from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Coffee was served as usual. Mr. and Mrs. IT. Quanlrill were with Mr. and Mrs. E. Elliott, on Scugog Lake, at the cottage on Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. J. Goodman called at Thickson's on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J, Peacock attended the service at Bethesda when the twins sang in the choir and took them to Guelph for school afterwards. Mr. and Mrs. V. Peacock visited with Mr. and Mrs. Charley Kemp, Peterborough recently. On Monday, Alyson Westheuser celebrated her 13th birthday and Mr. and Mrs. H. Thickson were there. Mr. and Mrs. E. Fowler spent the weekend at their boat in Buckhorn. They will have to bring it home before the 15th of October as the locks close then. On Tuesday evening, the general meeting of the U.C.W. met at the church. Mrs. Davis, the president, conducted the business first as our speaker hadn't arrived. Mrs. Gardiner read the minutes. Mrs. Dorothy Bell agreed to look after the Observer supscriptions. The Stewards informed us that they plan a turkey supper for the 17th of October. Tickets for sale by the Stewards. Mrs. Minifie had sent us a thank you note which was read. Mrs. June Smith gave us a financial report. Our next meeting is November 14th at Mrs. Davis' home at 1 p.m. Christmas dinner is December 12th at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Riches introduced our speaker, Shirley Ross, supervisor of Red Cross Homemaker. She spoke on the work of the homemakers which has an office in Cobourg. Lunch was served by the East Group. Mrs. E. Fowler, Mrs. Westheuser, Mrs. Haynes and Mrs. II. Thickson were in Toronto Wednesday. Wednesday evening, Mr. and Mrs. I. Langillc held a Tuppenvaro party. There was a good crowd and Rosemary Thompson was the saleslady. MERVYN B.
