Finlay Agricultural Representative BOWMANVILLE VETERINARIAN NAMED TO AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF ONTARIO Agriculture Minister, Dennis Timbrel! has appointed Dr. Janice Aluin of Bowmanville to a three-year term as a new member of the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario. The Institute reviews research programs at the Ministry's Colleges of Agricultural Technology, Horticultural Research and Experimental Stations and makes recommendations to the Minister. Other appointments to the Institute include Dr. David Lees of Bolton as Chairperson, Hank Vander Pol of Blenheim as Vice- Chairperson and Keith Coliver of Simcoe and Dr. Jacques Cartier of Agriculture Canada for three year terms. NATIONAL I- II SHOW The Contact Hays Classic Show for Ontario 4-H calves takes on a national flavor this year in recognition of Holstein Canada's Centennial celebrations. 4-H calves are expected to be showing from every province in Canada. From Ontario, each County may enter six calves in showmanship and type classes. Exhibitors from Durham East include: Elaine Barkey, Glenn Barkey and Sharyn Barkey from Blackstock; Wilma Benschop from Bowmanville; Anne- Marie Hoogeveen and Debra VanCamp from Blackstock. The show begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13th at the Markham Fairgrounds. FARM TAX and BUSINESS SEMINAR A Farm Tax and Business Seminar primarily for accountants and lawyers, who service farmers, will be held at the Holiday Inn, Oshawa, on Wednesday, November 7th. The topics to be discussed include: Farm Partnerships including Precedent Partnership agreements, Transfer of Assets and Clauses for Wills, Spousal Partnerships, Record- Keeping and Ownership of Assets. A Tax and Business update is also on the agenda. Asset Ownership involves the transfer of assets from one generation to another, estates, leases, notes, mortgages, agreements of sale, tax and legal implications and the Family Law Reform Act. Farmers should make sure their accountant and lawyer are aware of this Seminar. Brochures and application forms are available at your local agricultural office. Cost is only $44 per person and includes extensive resource material. Martin Marty to Speak in Lindsay Eminent historian, lecturer and writer Dr. Martin Marty has chosen "Values and Ethics 1984" as his topic for the Stinson Memorial Lecture Series to be given in Lindsay, October 25th to 28th, 1984. The Stinson Memorial Mission Committee has announced details of Dr. Marty's four-day program as follows :- On Thursday, October 25th, the series will open at 7:30 p.m. in the Frost Theatre at Sir Sandford Fleming College, Frost Campus, Lindsay, when Dr. Marty's subject will be "Where is the Rule Book, Who's the Referee?" Admission to this lecture (as are all other events) is free, but because of space limitations limitations tickets are being provided. Seating in the Frost Theatre will be by ticket only until 7:15 p.m. General admission to the public will be after 7:15 p.m. and when the Frost Theatre is full, overflow seating will be provided in the second lecture theatre with closed circuit T.V. Tickets are available free of charge after October 3rd at Sir Sandford Fleming College, Frost Campus, Cambridge New Issue of Savings Bonds Ready for Fall The Honorable Michael Wilson, Minister of Finance, announced recently that a new issue of Canada Savings Bonds will be offered to investors this Fall. The new series will be available for cash starting October 24. Further details, including the rate of interest to be paid, will be provided around mid- October. The October announcement will also specify the rate of interest to be paid on all outstanding and unmatured Canada Savings Bond issues for the year commencing November 1, 1984, the issuance date of the new bonds. Last year's bond issue currently provides for an annual rate of return of 9.6G per cent for the one-year period ending October 31,1984 (9.25 per cent for the initial seven months and 10.25 per cent for the remaining five months) and a minimum of seven per cent a year after that until maturity. Series 37, issued November 1, 1982, provides for the same annual return for the period ending October 31, 1984 and a minimum of 8.50 per cent a year after that until maturity. All other outstanding and unmatured bonds earn 10.50 per cent for the year ending October 31, 1984 with a guaranteed minimum of 10.50 per cent in subsequent years to maturity. Mr. Wilson reminded holders of Canada Savings Bonds Series 27, issued in 1972, and Scries 30, issued in 1975, that these bonds mature on November 1, 1984 and will not earn interest after that date. On Friday, October 26th, Dr. Marty will devote his time exclusively to students, visiting Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute and I.E. Weldon Secondary School in the morning, and Sir Sandford Fleming College in the afternoon. On Saturday, October 27th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Frost Theatre, Dr. Marty will speak on the topic "Why Bother to Play the Game of Values?" and his lecture will be followed by audience participation and open discussion. Dr. Marty's visit to Lindsay will conclude on Sunday, October 28th, when he will be the guest speaker at Cambridge Street United: Church morning service. Commencing at 11:00 a.m. his subject will be "The Covenant with Your House, Your Heart." This is the second annual Stinson Memorial Lecture Series, according to Richard Gorwill, Chairman of the Committee. Last year's speaker was Dr. Langdon Gilkey, and his lectures were well attended and widely discussed. Dr. Marty is a colleague of Dr. Gilkey at the University of Chicago, where he is Professor of the History of Modern Christianity. He is also Associate Editor of the Christian Century, editor of the newsletter "Context," and co-editor of the Church History. Ordained as a Lutheran in 1952, he served as a pastoral minister for 11 years.
