4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 17,1984 Section Two Kitchen Kapers BHS Students Travel to Peterborough A microwave oven is one kitchen appliance that can definitely make meal preparation more convenient and save precious time. For example a 1.8 kg (4 lb.) rib roast cooked to medium rare in the microwave oven will be ready to serve for dinner in less than an hour. Beef roasts offer good dollar value and once cooked the leftover beef can be used for a variety of quick meals. When microwaving a roast of beef, tenderness of the cut determines the procedure and the power level to be used. Use this chart as a general guide. Most Tender, eg: rib, sirloin - 50 per cent power level. Medium Tender, eg: rump, cross rib - 30 - 50 per cent power level. Less Tender, eg: shoulder, short rib -30-50 per cent power level. The ideal roast for microwave cooking weighs 1.4 -1.8 kg (3 - 4 lbs.) and is relatively uniform in shape. The roast will require shielding with a small piece of foil for part of the cooking period along thinner parts of the roast, bones and exterior fat. The roast will brown in the microwave but not to the same extent as in conventional ovens. If more color is desired, brush with browning sauce which is available at most supermarkets. Season with spices before cooking, however DO NOT salt until after the roast is cooked. To ensure tenderness, cook less tender cuts of beef with added liquid and cover. Medium and less tender cuts may be slightly more tender if cooked at 30 per cent power rather than 50 per cent power. Increase time by half if lower power is used, eg: 30 minutes at 50 per cent - 45 minutes at 30 per cent power. For medium tender and tender roasts follow this procedure for best results: Place roast on a rack/inverted saucer in baking dish with fat side down. Cover with waxed paper, cook Vz total calculated time and rotate dish once. Drain accumulated juices, turn the roast over and shield where necessary. Cook remaining time until the desired degree of doneness is reached. A meat thermometer is the most accurate way to test for doneness. Remove the roast from the microwave. Loosely wrap in foil to prevent moisture loss. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes. During the standing time the roast continues cooking. Therefore, slightly undercook the roast to allow it to finish cooking while standing. Tandoori Beef Roast is a main dish of Indian origin. Well suited to microwaving, this roast can be served with a tasty pilaf, a light salad and a spicy fruit chutney for that finishing touch. This group of 46 students from the grade 10 machine shop class at Bowmanville High School embarked on a trip to a Peterborough manufacturing manufacturing plant last week. The purpose of the visit to the Fisher Gage Company was to observe zinc die casting and die production as well as the manufacturing manufacturing of machine parts. As a result of the trip, the students will gain better understanding of the jobs available in the manufacturing industry. JudyWoodbeck Nelda Dawson 705-277-3117 983-5519 623-4835 On Sept. 18, 1984 a meeting with Transportation Minister James Snow, Sam Cureatz, MPP, Mayor Garnet Rickard, our Director of Education, Gary Tushingham and myself, was held to discuss the Clarke High School - Pines Senior Public School exit problem. I am not pleased with the reaction of the minister to the problem. I am not sure he fully understands the potential for a serious incident involving involving our children. If he does then he obviously doesn't care! Both Mayor Rickard and Sam Cureatz seem to share our concern and are anxious to see a solution to eliminate or at least minimize the problem. The best solution of course is to provide an alternate route running off the third line to the back of the schools. This would not only provide an emergency exit but would assist in reducing the travel time for students and the costs to the local school board for bus transportation. But this suggestion does appear to be an expensive one. Construction of a new road would likely be over one million dollars. The province would not provide full funds because the minister does not see that the province is creating creating a problem. I disagree. The town of course does not see itself in a financial position to build such a road on their own. I must agree with this position. position. The 115-35 highway is being reconstructed to help the people of the province who travel that highway. It is not just for local taxpayers. It would follow that the serious problems it creates should be corrected by the province. The second element of the new highway that concerns me is the narrow exit from the schools and the lack of a third lane to the fourth line. Having looked at the situation several times I cannot see how the buses can safely enter the highway. In the area of the schools the highway is two lanes with an extra wide paved shoulder - not a third lane. A fleet of slow moving vehicles will create a hazard. I spoke with George Cameron, THE HIGHER YOUR BALANCE, THE HIGHER YOUR DAILY INTEREST, ON EVERY DOLLAR IN YOUR ACCOUNT Unlike some accounts that only pay you higher interest on the portion above a pre-set limit, with a Royal Bank Signature account the high interest rate for higher balances is $ paid on eveiy dollar in your account. How Signature works: Daily closing balance my predecessor, and he tells me that the ministry promised a third lane would be provided from the schools to the fourth line. Most buses will not continue continue up the 115-35 but turn off at the Fourth Line. Unfortunately Unfortunately a search of board records did not reveal a commitment from, the province province on this issue. But Mr. Cameron is adamant that the understanding was clear. The minister when pressed on this point at the meeting merely suggested we wait until the highway is finished to see if there is a problem. That would be a gross. waste of taxpayers' money! The bus operators share my concern. The board shares my concern. Parents of students at these schools share my concern. The staff at the schools share my concern. Why can't the minister share our concern? He's the one responsible for the safety of ; provincial, roads not the school board! One of the board's priorities for the 1984-85 school year is a re-evaluation of* the" board's role in continuing education. This is an important priority. Many adults are seeking to improve their skills. Some for improved job opportunities and others to help improve the quality of their leisure time. School boards have a legitimate legitimate role to play in both. One such need that has come to light is academic upgrading for people who work shifts. Many on shift work have been ignored. Most programs are geared for those who work straight days. The time has come for our board to follow the example of the Durham Board. They provide courses which accommodate the irregular shifts many people work. As technology changes workers are going to want to improve their skills to avail themselves of the challenges challenges presented by such changes. A basic level of education, as a foundation to build on, is required. I believe our board should try to help. If you are a shift worker and are interested in improving your education, I would like to he from you. hear lip 10 $999.99 -you earn 3%f on all your money $1,000.0010 $2,999.99 -you cam 8%t on all your money $3,000.00 to $4,999,99 -you earn 814%! on all your money $5,000.00 and owr -you cam I0%t °n all your money • earn higher interest on the whole balance, even if that money is in your account for just one day • paid into your account eveiy month Check all the advantages Signature offers: 12 free cheques or withdrawals a month ■ a detailed monthly statement ■ cancelled cheques returned (no charge) ■ optional overdraft protection ■ no minimum balance required ■ optional 24-hour access at any of over 600 Personal Touch Banking* machines in Canada. You are encouraged to support these committees. Hopefully, you can afford the little extra time required to be an active participant. Schools need parental input.
