I St. Paul's Church Anniversary Supplement ofThe Canadian Statesman, Oct. 17,1984 Page 5 F ormer Amateur Boxer Comes to St. Paul's in '73 Ed Schamerhorn used to be a middleweight amateur boxer before he entered the ministry. But the pastor at St. Paul's United Church recalls recalls that he gave up boxing once he found his new vocation. vocation. "I came to a point where I felt there was more to life than knocking people down," he says. "I felt maybe it was time to start picking them up." But looking back on his youth in Belleville, Rev. Schamerhorn believes that all of his experiences were leading him towards the ministry. "I think the Lord trains us in his own way," he said. For Ed Schamerhorn, that training included eight years of working for the CNR railway in Belleville. For part of that time, he worked at his regular railway railway job while completing high school. He was 23 when he went back to school at Queen's University. He graduated in 1963, having received both his B. A. and M.Div. degrees. During the summers away from university, he con tinued to broaden his experience experience by serving as a chaplain in the Canadian Forces, in which he holds a permanent commission. He also served as a missionary to the Yukon Territory in 1962, In 1963, he served at his first pastoral charge in Maynooth, where remained until 1967. He then went to the Harrowsmith Pastoral Charge from 1967 to 1973, before coming to St. Paul's. Ed Schamerhorn met his wife, Marilyn while at a camp in Picton. The Schamerhorns have four children. Their eldest, Sherol, is 20. Jamie is 18, John is 15 and Peter is 14. In addition to his duties as pastor of St. Paul's, Ed Schamerhorn has held a number of offices within the church, including a term as president of the Bay of Quinte Conference. He is also a board member and former chairman of the board of directors for the Ongwanada Hospital in Kingston. Schamerhorn said in describing describing the activities at St. Paul's. Programs at the church serve all ages and entire families. Church groups are open to all of the community. "If you want to serve God, you have to serve people," Rev. Schamerhorn said. St. Paul's Hi-C Members Anyone who doesn't mind having a good time is more than welcome to join the Hi-C Club at the St. Paul's United Church. The group is open to teens attending high school and meets every second Sunday evening. Some of the Hi-C members are pictured here. Following the business we usually have an activity such as a game, a discussion or a film. Often the activity time is a sport such as basketball, volleyball or floor hockey. Tasty snacks are always enjoyed at the end of the evening. Special nights out have been rollerskating, swimming, toboganning and ice skating. Each year's season usually ends with a weekend at Rev. Schamerhorn's cottage. From time to time we get together with groups from other churches for dances, rallies and outings. Last Fall we hosted the Annual Youth Rally and welcomed teens and leaders from many other United Churches in the region. In May, many of our group attended a fun-filled weekend at Teen Ranch near Orangeville. Orangeville. At this event we met and made friends with over 60 teens and leaders from other Hi-C groups. Each year, Hi-C supports the St. Paul's Church activities by conducting a Hi-C Sunday Service, a Church Family swim party, and by decorating the church sanctuary for Thanksgiving. All in all, Hi-C is a great way to enjoy fellowship and to make new friends. Anyone now in high school may join St. Paul's Hi-C, but there is one condition ... the condition is that you don't mind having a good time ! Come on out !
