Being a part of the Chancel Choir gives young people the opportunity to have many different experiences. While rehearsing, they learn about proper singing techniques and a variety of songs, sacred and secular, new and old. They then take these songs and sing not only for the congregation at St. Paul's, but at hospitals, conventions, senior citizens' homes and festivals. The choir has participated in the Oshawa Kiwanis Music Festival for a number of years and has received both gold and silver certificates. Christmas 1983 the Chancel Choir presented a musical, "The Little Shepherds" and it was so well received that another is planned for Spring 1985. Singing experiences are not the only benefits choir members receive. At choir they are able to socialize with their friends in St. Paul's, from around the community, during parties held throughout the year. To show appreciation to the choir, choir pins are awarded annually to choir members and special certificates are given to those members who complete Grade 8 and still belong to the choir. We at St. Paul's are proud of our Chancel Choir and the fact that it continues to be as important a part in the life of the church now, as it has been in the past. The director of the St. Paul's Chancel Choir is Allanah Coles. The Golden Years Club gathers every second and fourth Wednesday afternoon afternoon to enjoy a time of fellowship. A number of special outings are also held during the year. For many of our older people this club is certainly one of the most important functions of St. Paul's Church. For, apart from the Service of Worship on Sunday morning, it is the weekday activity that they feel is 'their own.' With very few exceptions, the friendship room is their centre every second and fourth Wednesday of the month; the one exception being the two summer months, when the club is closed for the summer. Year after year we have gathered on these afternoons to enjoy a time of recreation and fellowship together. From the first meeting some years ago (lost in antiquity just as the origins of St. Paul's itself have been) our membership has remained fairly constant Happy Anniversary to the folks at St. Paul's United Church from Bill Cole and Boyd Woolley of Ken's Men's Wear 35 Temperance St. N., Bowmanville Telephone 623-5580 "Quality First" Happy l »« tli Anniversary to our friends at St Paul's UnitedChurch From the staff at Guys and Gals Hairstylina 28 Division St. N. This present year the average attendance has increased, which we hope is an indication of the continued good health of our membership. The club has always insisted on the importance of our faith. We begin each session with a period of uplift and worship, in which various ones take their turn and act as leaders. Then follows a short business time, which is followed by games of euchre or shuffleboard. Each afternoon is rounded off with delicious lunch, including that invigorating cup of tea, before leaving for our homes again. We have just opened for another winter's meetings, after our refreshing summer recess. One or even two bus trips have become a part of the year's program. In the spring we finish off the winter with one. This present year saw us make our way to Prince Edward County for the second year. By popular demand, we visited some of the same places, leaving the church at 9:00 a.m. We travelled to Picton and on to the Lake of the Mountain, before visiting the Schamerhorn's cottage for a picnic lunch, topped off with drinks and ice cream. The focus of this trip was a visit to the first Methodist Chapel in Ontario, the OLD HAY BAY CHURCH, very fitting as this is the Centenary of the Methodist union movement in Ontario. It was thrilling and inspiring to see the spot where some of our forefathers 'gathered in those early days to worship -God as followers of John Wesley's movement as it sprang forth and grew. From there we turned toward home, travelling to Belleville, a shopping mall, and for the second year, a very satisfactory dinner at the United Church Quinte Living Centre. Finally, we were ready for a quiet return trip to Bowmanville. This year the return was quieter than usual for Walter and his mouth organ were missing on that day. I almost forgot to take notice of the special church service that we led at the church as our own part of St. Paul's celebration year. This took the form of a service with lots of singing of the old gospel songs. The choir loft was packed by our own members, others of us took the lead. I count myself to have been privileged to take part in this gathering, and feel very proud of our friends who gather together as a club. They really did a super job on that Sunday of early summer in 1984. Now that our Thanksgiving meeting is over, we shall continue into the winter, looking forward to our meetings, and in particular the next special event, which will be our Christmas meeting, with its pot luck luncheon and the coming of Santa Claus.
