The team appeared to be on a roller coaster ride throughout the entire week. Entering Thursday's match in Port Hope the Eagles were tied for first place in the league standings. standings. The Eagles dropped a 4 - 3 decision to the Panthers, giving the Port Hope squad sole possession of first place. On Saturday in Little Britain, the Eagles rebounded from their first defeat of the regular season to record an impressive impressive 9 - 1 victory over the Merchants. Then on Sunday at home the Eagles fell apart in the final period, losing 6 - 4 to the Uxbridge Bruins. In Thursday's game, the Eagles opened the scoring at the 2:02 mark as Darryl Rowe scored on a perfect pass from Brian Keenan. Defenceman Bob McCann, playing up on the wing for the evening, added the other assist. The Panthers were able to tie the game with their first of three powerplay goals in the evening evening as Kevin McIntosh beat Scott Hooper in the Eagles' net. In the second period, the Eagles went ahead 2 -1 after 1:55 had elapsed as Keenan once again fed Rowe who made no mistake, beating Ed Carpenter in the Panther net for his second goal of the evening. As in the first period, the Port Hope squad was able to come back ana tie the game with à powerplay goal. Shawn Shalia scored this goal from Tony Wakely and Todd Douglas at the 6:03 mark. The score remained tied at 2 - 2 until the 6:25 mark of the closing period. At this point the Panthers scored the go-ahead goal as Wakely shot the puck which trickled between Hooper's legs and over the goal line. Daren Zoldy and Pat Roy picked up assists on the play. Port Hope then scored the. eventual game-winning- goal less than three minutes later as they were enjoying a two-man powerplay situation. Wakely was once again the goal- scorer with Roy and Douglas collecting assists. The final goal of the game was scored by Bowmanville's Glenn German. What a classic "Albert" goal it was! Inserted into Bowmanville's powerplay to play the point position, German after receiving the puck let go a cannonading drive, beating the stunned Panther netminder. Keenan picked up the lone assist (for his third of the game) on this goal scored at 16:10. The Eagles tried desperately desperately to tie the game but it was not to be. Enjoying a man- advantage opportunity in the final minute the Eagles could not manage to gain control of the puck in Port Hope's end thus enabling the Panthers to secure their 4 - 3 victory. On Saturday in Little Britain, the Eagles turned what was supposed to be a close game into a romp. It was the first time the two squads had met since last year's league finals. The Eagles continued their dominance over the Merchants recording a 9 -1 win. The scoring was opened by the Eagles' captain Keenan at 9:18 of the first period with Rowe and Randy Ellis earning assists. Little Britain was successful in tying the game with their only goal of the evening at 11:11 as Tim Siddle scored on the powerplay from Rob Louttit and Doug Taylor. The Eagles went ahead 2 - 1 when Keenan who was behind the Merchants' net, passed the uck to Pierre St. Amand who ad dashed in from the point and found himself alone in front of Ron Stewart. St. Amand released a quick shot giving the Eagles the lead at 14:17 with Andy Terry receiving receiving the other assist on the play. The final goal of the period was the direct result of a Merchants' miscue in their own zone. Attempting to move the puck out of their own end as they were enjoying a powerplay, the Merchants put the puck on the stick of Bowmanville's Ellis. Ellis' shot failed but Keenan who was trailing on the play had two opportunities and finally put the puck in the net. This goal was scored at 15:35 and Terry also picked up the other assist. In the second period, the Eagles scored two powerplay goals to take a 5 -1 lead into the final stanza. The first marker came from German who broke down the left wing and received an excellent pass from Jeff Dawson. Roger Hornsby added the other assist for this goal scored at 7:27. Then at the 11:22 mark, Hornsby drove a hard shot, beating John McEarchern who had just replaced Stewart in the Merchants' net. Scott Heard and Gord Rogers earned earned the assists for the Eagles. In the concluding period the Eagles maintained control of the game as they scored four more times. At 3:34 Ellis scored on the powerplay from Keenan and German. Ellis then received his fourth point of the evening as he scored his second goal on a picture-perfect picture-perfect pass from Scott McLeod at 9:59. Only ten seconds later, the Heard brothers teamed up for Bowmanville's eighth goal. Scott did most of the work behind the net and then fed Brian who was waiting all alone in front of McEarchern. Terry picked up his third point of this encounter by adding the other assist. The final goal of the game was scored when each team had only three skaters on the ice. With plenty of room to move around both teams made some nifty end-to-end rushes. As the puck was shot in the Merchants',.., zone McEarchern attempted 1 to clear the puck up the side but put it right on the stick of Rogers who moved in and beat the Merchants' netminder. Dawson was credited with an assist at the 11:56 mark. Honourable mention should go out to the Eagles' netminder netminder Don Hayes who had a spectacular outing, stopping 22 out of the 23 shots directed his way. The game also featured featured the debut of John Young in an Eagles' uniform. Young a recent cut from the Dixie Beehives from the Ontario • Junior Hockey League was - ahead on a line with the Heard • brothers and certainly did not • look out of place for his initial ! game with the Eagles. In Sunday night's game, • Uxbridge made their presence felt early as Paul MacEwen ■ scored a shorthanded goal from Scott Harper at the 5:15 ' mark of the opening period. This tying tally ' was a powerplay marker and assists were handed out to Chris Dreossi and St. Amand. * Just over four minutes later - the Eagles took the lead as Young from behind the net fed ; St. Amand who was cruising in - from the point. In the second period, ; Bowmanville extended its - lead to 3 - 1 as the Eagles " forced a pileup in front of Joosten. The puck entered the : net with Ellis being awarded ' the goal from Rowe and St. Amand at 9:12.
