Pickering Exhibition The week's activities began Saturday morning (Nov. 10) in Pickering against the double A minor bantam team, a return return match to avenge a previous previous 3 - 0 stinging by Pickering. Pickering. Loaded for bear and recharged recharged with several returning returning players, Toros were soon on the scoreboard in the first, with a superb passing play that allowed Troy Mutton to deflect the puck from Stephen Smith and Dean Baumhauer past a surprised goalie. Minutes later Pickering retaliated retaliated and appearances indicated indicated a tough battle was to ensue. Troy Mutton assisted by Stephen Smith and Nicky Dennis demonstrated a repeat performance of his first goal and the period ended 2-1. In the second, the returning Greg Healey, absent for eight games due to an injury, proved he is always dangerous around the net and pumped a hobbled puck past a scrambling scrambling goaltender (assisted by Stephen Smith and Shane Armstrong). Seconds later Tim Powers stole the puck and spearheaded a passing attack into the Pickering zone with Doug Lever and Jim Pithie. The play was broken up at the net but the pressing Toros kept the puck in possession with Dean Baumhauer's smashing drive from the point being deflected onto the stick of Tim Powers who quickly dumped it into the net. (assist to Doug Lever) Despite two goals in the third: one from Shane Armstrong Armstrong on an alert play, steal ing the puck from a sprawled goalie (assist to Stephen Smith); and the other from Doug Lever (assist to Nicky Dennis), play became chippy due to referee reluctance to call a blatant butting incident to the Toros, who unfortunately unfortunately became involved in retaliation retaliation techniques. Four successive successive Toro penalties allowed three fast Pickering goals and a spirited Pickering team to almost tie the game. Fortunately Fortunately Buckham held on to win the match 6 - 5. Uxbridge A few hours and two- hundred laps later (the whole club was involved in an afternoon afternoon skate-a-thon) the 'refreshed' Toros went head-to -head with an Uxbridge team at Darlington. Toros scored early in the first with Shane Armstrong (assisted by Neil Taylor and Greg Healey) but were held to a 1 - 0 lead by the battling Uxbridgers. However, the second period sealed their fate when Toros hit for three: Nicky Dennis in a pretty Gretzky-like goal that deked all oncomers to rifle one past the goalie unassisted; Jim Pithie who crammed the puck into the net (assisted by Tim Powers and Doug Lever) and Nicky Dennis in a repeat performance performance assisted by Stephen Smith. The period ended 4 - 0 for the Toros. Stephen Smith continued the attack early in the third in an unassisted assault on the Uxbridge defence. Despite a last minute surge for Uxbridge the game ended 5 - 2 thanks to tight goaltending by Mike Ruthard and Derek Biss. Markham On Sunday, Nov. 11 the club travelled to Markham to take on their double A minor bantams, bantams, a fast skating, hardhitting hardhitting team that charged at the Toros testing the goal tending of Derek Biss early in the first period. A tight defence controlled by Tim Partridge, Dean Baumhauer, John-Paul Duczmalewski and Greg Goode and some lucky Toro bounces kept the slate clean. Toros first goal came with two seconds left in the first period during a power- play assault when Troy Mutton assisted by Stephen Smith and Nicky Dennis dumped one past the goalie. A few minutes into the second Greg Healey exploded in a puck-stealing venture tearing past the defence and slamming one at the goal to have it rebounded in by Neil Taylor (assist to Shane Arm-, strong). The Toros took shooting shooting practice in this period peppering the goalie relentlessly relentlessly but were held to a 2 - 0 lead. In the third Markham indulged indulged in goon tactics, holding, holding, elbowing, roughing, etc., many of which were unseen or unrecognized by obviously inexperienced referees. Despite the assault a well- disciplined Toros showed class by refusing to retaliate. Nicky Dennis (Dean Baumhauer Baumhauer and Troy Mutton) and Stephen Smith (Troy Mutton) rounded off the scoring to take the game 4 - 0, a shut-out well deserved by Derek Biss and Mike Ruthard. 4 401 Esso 2 J & J Sharpening 1 Lange's Photo 1 Bolahood's 1 Pee Wee McRobbie 2 Mr. Sub 2 Hutton 2 I.O.O.F. 2 J & J Sharpening 1 0 0 10 4 2 0 20 14 1 8 10 2 2 3 1 1 2 2 3 14 10 25 16 12 11 0 24 20 0 19 22 0 13 24 House League Select Teams Novice: Frank's Variety Atom : Ken Wright Haulage Pee Wee: Checker's Variety Games Nov. 10,1984 Novice Victoria & Grey 4, Doug Parkin 2, Ryan Leppèrt 1, Greg McMurter 1 - Bonded Paving 1, Allan McCullough 1.
