Activity Professionals Hold Workshop Here by Diane Pickett Volunteers and - activity professionals have been providing invaluable help to nursing homes for many years. As Sharron Brown from South Haven in Newcastle Newcastle said, "We do everything everything that isn't medical." Ms. Brown was speaking at the first workshop held by the Regional Association of Activity Professionals of Ontario, November 15 and 16, at the Flying Dutchman in Bowmanville. Ms. Brown is one of two Canadian members of the National Association of Activity Activity Professionals in the United States and has founded the first group in Canada within Region 3 of the Ontario Nursing Home Association. The purpose ofthe association association is to educate its mem T hers and the public. It aims to make the public more aware ofthe needs and concerns concerns of seniors. "We want people to think ofthe nursing nursing home as a place to live not a place to die." While maintaining its affiliation with nursing homes and long-term care facilities, the association wants to become become equally involved in all social programs for the elderly. At a meeting of Council on November 13, delegate David Shevchuk presented the Mayor and Council with a petition containing 38 signatures signatures of people who object object to the criteria outlined in the policy statement. They feel that there should have been public input into the report. Their objections arose upon realizing that, according according to the town's criteria, their "community" would not be designated a cluster.
