l 8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 21,1984 Dutchman Atoms Win Tourney Title The Bowmanville Major Atom Toros, sponsored by the Flying Dutchman Hotel, journeyed to Parry Sound to take part in the 30,000 Island Invitational Tournament last weekend. Bowmanville captured the Championship on the strength of four victories and no losses during the three- day event. The Toros defeated Port Elgin, Bracebridge, Parry Sound and Collingwood to capture the crown in what was a very impressive and well-run tournament. On Saturday, the Toros were pitted against Port Elgin and defeated them 7 - 2. The Toros' Chad Armstrong scored the only goal of the opening period with the assist going to Tyler Stokes. Both teams retired to their dressing rooms for the break, and after returning to open the middle period, the Toros unleashed unleashed their scoring punch, picking up five goals to Port Elgin's two. Marty Burgess picked up the second goal for Bowmanville, the assists going to his linemates Kyle Purdy and Ryan Stewart. Burgess scored again, the assists credited to Steven Desmedt and Stewart. Todd Cannings notched the fourth Toro goal, assisted by Jason Edmondson. Tyler Stokes scored at the 4:50 mark, the assist going to Desmedt. Port Elgin scored their first goal, but Burgess got that one back with the assist going to his centreman Stewart. Port Elgin again scored, and Steve Desmedt rounded out the scoring, scoring, picking up an unassisted marker in the third period. The goaltending duties were shared by Paul Zwicker and Eddie Strickland. Marty Burgess was presented with a trophy for picking up the hat trick. Edge Bracebridge 4 - 3 The next game for Bowmanville Bowmanville was against a very tough Bracebridge squad. Bracebridge jumped into an early 2 - 0 first period lead and seemed to have the Toros on the ropes. Early in the second period, Tyler Stokes scored the first Bowmanville goal, assisted by David Real. Todd Cannings scored an unassisted marker to tie the score at 2 - 2. Bracebridge scored to go into the lead again, but the Toros' Cannings came right back to tie the score at 3 - 3. With time running out Todd Cannings completed his hat trick with a great solo effort to win the game 4 - 3. Todd was presented presented with a trophy for his three goal performance. Paul Zwicker was in goal for the Toros and was very sharp to pick up the win. Prior to this game, former Boston Bruin and Chicago Black Hawk superstar Bobby Orr, on invitation, paid a visit to the Bowmanville dressing room. The boys were very impressed with his remarks and certainly responded with his request for a "good hockey game." The opening ceremonies for the tournament took place immediately following this game and were very impressive impressive with the Captains of all participating teams being individually introduced to the huge crowd on hand. Edge Parry Sound 1 - 0 On Sunday morning, the Toros met their hosts in the championship Semi-Final. Both clubs had some glorious scoring chances during the three periods, but neither club could score. At the end of regulation time, the teams went into overtime, sudden- death but with no goaltenders in either net. Only 44 seconds had elapsed when the Toros' Todd Cannings scored to win the game. Eddie Strickland was in goal for Bowmanville and was just great, and was full value for the shutout. Both goaltenders for Bowmanville were presented presented with trophies in honor of their shutout. Todd Cannings was named Most Valuable Player in this game. Beat Collingwood 2 -1 The stage was not set for the Championship game between undefeated Collingwood and Bowmanville. There was no scoring until the 7:46 mark of the final period, when Todd Cannings scored on a beautiful play, with the assists going to David Real and Steven Desmedt. The game-winning goal was scored by Tyler Stokes, with the assist going to Chad Armstrong. With 1:10 remaining in regulation time, Collingwood scored during a goalmouth scramble. The Toros checked fiendishly during the remaining time and kept the Collingwood club bottled up in their end to capture the victory. Paul Zwicker was in goal for the Toros and made some great saves to pick up a well- deserved victory. Todd Cannings, who had just a marvellous tournament was awarded Most Valuable Player. The team was presented with a trophy and each player was awarded a medallion in honor of the championship. The Bowmanville lads showed tremendous poise throughout the four games and had to play almost perfect hockey to win their games. They played good positional hockey, and just didn't stop skating throughout the tourney. Tremendous pressure pressure was applied by their opposition and' the Toros handled it extremely well and stuck to their game plan throughout. They fully deserved deserved to be called "Champions." The Bowmanville Major Atom Toros, sponsored by the Flying Dutchman Hotel, blasted blasted the visiting Pickering Major Atoms by the score of 11 - 0 in an O.M.H.A. League game played in the Darlington Sports Centre on Tuesday, November 13th. The Toros struck for the first and eventual gamewinning gamewinning goal after only 37 seconds had elapsed in the opening period, the trigger- man being Jason Edmondson. The assists went to David Real and defenceman Steve Desmedt. Real fired the second goal, assisted by Edmondson. Marty Burgess picked up an unassisted goal at the 7:47 mark of the middle period on a nice play. Todd Cannings scored the fourth goal for the "Dutchmen" on a slick passing passing play engineered by defenceman Mark Brecken- ridge. Terry VanLonden picked picked up his first goal of the season on a nifty play, the assists going to his wingers Chad Armstrong and Tyler Stokes. The Flying Dutchman lads continued to apply tremendous tremendous pressure on the visitors and were rewarded with another goal at the 3:54 mark, an unassisted marker off the stick of Todd Cannings. Tyler Stokes scored the eighth Toro goal, the assists going to VanLonden VanLonden and Desmedt, VanLonden scored his second of the game, unassisted. Ryan Stewart, who had a tremendous tremendous game, scored on a play set up by Marty Burgess and Desmedt. Jason Edmondson picked up the last goal of the game, with the assists going to Cannings and Real. Paul Zwicker and Eddy Strickland shared the goaltending goaltending duties and were full value for the well-deserved shutout. The "Dutchmen" put on quite a display of puck control and at one point there was almost three minutes of action in the Pickering zone when the visitors didn't once have possession. The Toro lads were forechecking and back- checking with great determination determination and played their positions with discipline, completely controlling the "lanes." This is the type of hockey they must play for success. Canadian Tire Downs Oshawa Bowmanville 2 Canadians 0 In an exhibition game played played in Newcastle against the Oshawa L.N.H.L. Canadians, Bowmanville won by a score of 2 - 0, giving a shutout to goalie David Smith. Scoring for Bowmanville were Rob Davidson and Paul Stainton with Michael Houston getting the assists on both goals. Bowmanville 8 Port Perry 3 In league play on Wednesday, Wednesday, Nov. 14 in Port Perry, Bowmanville defeated the home team by a score of 8 - 3. In the first period of play, Bowmanville were the only scorers with goals going to Rob Davidson, assisted by Shmyr, Campbell from Pilhie and Edmondson from Stainton and McArthur. Bowmanville picked up two more goals in the second and three more in the third to end the game with a total of eight. Scoring in the last two periods of the game were Pithie two, Campbell, Houston and Shmyr each scoring singles. Assists went to Campbell (two), Shmyr (two), Martin and Pithie. Bowmanville I - Blackhawks 1 In an exhibition game Saturday, Nov. 17 at Darlington Darlington Sports Centre the Canadian Tire Minor Midgets were the winners of a 4 - 1 game over the Oshawa Black- hawks of the L.N.H.L, Bowmanville led this game all the way with the score being 4 - 0 in the third period before Oshawa got their lone goal at the 7:21 mark to finish the scoring for the night, Two Bowmanville defense- men Bob McArthur and Jamie Downing each received a goal with assists to Martin, Shmyr and Pithie. Rounding out the scoring were Pithie from Martin and McArthur and Davidson from Martin and Houston.
