( \ 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 28,1984 Community Shocked by Tragic Accident Blackstock Uur community was both shocked and saddened saddened to learn of the . tragic death of one of our "Native Sons" Bob Lawrence who was killed killed in à farm accident at his farm at Newtonville on Sunday. Sympathy is extended to his wife the former Jane Passant who also was a Cartwright Cartwright girl and their family, to his mother, Mrs. Muriel Lawrence, to Jane's sister, Mary and Larry Mackie and family as well as to other relatives and friends in the area. The first Curling Bon- spiel of the season took place at the local arena on Saturday when a mixed Bonspiel was sponsored by Keith's Flowers of Uxbridge. Twelve teams enjoyed a day of keen curling on the excellent ice provided provided by Icemakers Bob Strong and Vernon Sutton. Following the curling a delicious ham dinner was prepared and served by the A.C.W. Ladies. Club President Harold Wright expressed the appreciation to the sponsor and then announced the overall winner was the rink skipped by Vem Assle- stine, Mae and Jim Smitherman, and Elizabeth Elizabeth Kelly. Top team in the second draw which stood second were Keith and De Van Camp, Scott Howey and Cindy Werry. Second place in the early draw were Neil and Kathy McLaughlin, Grant and Heather McLaughlin. Second in the late draw were Roger and Elaine Porter, Sean Porter, Debbie McCracken. Following the presentation presentation of these prizes, the evening concluded with dancing to the music of D.J. Glen Howsam. Caroline Carnaghan played the part of Mrs. Hardcastle in the play "She Stoops to Conquer" at the Brock University Theatre in St. Catherines. Mrs. John Carnaghan and Murray attended the production on Thursday night. On Tuesday evening Nancy Bryans attended a Courtice Ladies Ball Reunion at Courtice High School. About 40 ladies and three men coaches from 1920's to the present attended. Even a score book and uniform from 1923 were displayed. It was so nice to see those from the past. When Nancy played played in the 50*s the teams in the league were Orono, Newcastle, New-i tonville and of course, Courtice. Bob also coached in the early 60's but did not attend. At the regular Lions' Club meeting on Wednesday Wednesday evening Mr. Bill Brown, the District Administrator of York and Durham Region of the C.N.I.B. was present. Mr. Pat Porrill presented Mr. Brown with $1858. from the Canvas of the area. The Lions would like to express their appreciation appreciation for the fine support of the commun ity. At the next meeting, Wed. Dec. 5 a R.C.M.P. officer will be present to speak on Drug Abuse. "Die Public is invited to attend at 8 p.m. to hear this informative speaker. On Friday evening at the United Church Mrs. Joan Good presented a very interesting travelogue travelogue on Modem China with slides she and her husband had taken on their trip back to her homeland last summer. Many preconceived ideas were changed with seeing China of Today. Glenn Larmer presented Mrs. GooJ with a flowering pl?.nt and a church spoon us a token of appreciation. The evening concluded with a tasty lunch including Chinese fortune cookies. The Blackstock Youth Group met on Sunday, November 25 at the Blackstock United Church. Elizabeth Ful- ford from Community Care was the guest speaker. Mrs. Fulford gave some interesting information on Community Community Care. Rob Graham thanked her and presented her with a plant in appreciation for her most informing talk, Refreshments were then servied. The next meeting is to be held on Dec. 9 with bowling as the activity. Good wishes for as speedy recovery as possible is wished Sandra Hoskin who is in Port Perry Hospital where she underwent surgery last week. Two local families had a very exciting weekend attending a family reunion in the Province of Quebec. Andrea and Ross Weir, Janet, Jim and Russell, Laurie and Bonnie Hart, Michael, Mary, Jody and Kelly attended the MacLaren Reunion held at Chateau Montebello, Montebello, P.Q. During the weekend activities included curling, a family dinner followed by a Scottish Ball. Many of the men were dressed in kilts for the dinner and dance. Check with Russell regarding his helping to start a new family tradition. Laurie and Bonnie were on the winning rink which captured the Bal- quhidder Curling Trophy. Congratulations. Congratulations. Thirty two members of the Thursday night group of square dancers left Blackstock on a mystery square dance trip. Destination was a mystery to all except the organizers but even they were in the dark when due to the new junction at No. 115 and No. 7 highways, the leaders became slightly lost and had to make a "Grand Circle." Confederation Confederation School in Peterborough was finally reached. Anne Redden and fiance "Joe", both caller, had their group assembled where the Blackstock group were a surprise, not to Anne, but to most of her group. It is always fun to visit another group and have the experience of dancing dancing to a different caller. After a night of great dancing with this hospitable group, lunch was enjoyed followed by good-byes. Congratulations to the Cartwright High School Girls's Basketball teams who have done extremely well in the recent Central Ontario Secondary Athletic Association (Single A - for schools with under 750 students). The Midgets Midgets coached by Miss Rumble won the championship defeating Clarke H.S. 47-21. The Juniors coached by Mr. Schnidttker lost their Championship game by 7 points to Campbellford High School. The Seniors coached by Mr. Fletcher defeated Clarke 50-41 and will be participating in the All Ontario Championship for Single a schools at Guelph on Dec. 6,7 and 8th. Plays to 1-1 Tie Saturday, November 24, 1984, the teams of Victoria and Grey and Adam and Eve played to a one all tie before an appreciative audience. Ryan Leppert obtained the only goal for Victoria and Grey.'i The rest of our team fought on throughout the game but Were,;Unable to increase the totals. Both teams put on an excellent excellent display of willingness to win. These youngsters are something to watch, so come on down and have some fun. Welter Frank Major Midgets Add Three Wins On November 19, the Walter Frank Midget Toros played a league game with Cobourg adding a win to their record. Greg Martin scored the only goal of the first period with Noble and Beck assisting. The Toros were scoreless in the second period while Cobourg went ahead. Then in the third period, the Toros stuck to playing hockey while Cobourg filled the penalty box and our boys put in five goals to win 6 - 5. Larry Perris started off with an unassisted shot from the point. Greg Martin added his second goal of the game and Chris Beck scored a hat trick. Brian Noble (two), Scott Page ( two), Kelley Balsom and Jeff Thompson collected assists. Pee Wees Open Regular Season The Mr. Sub Pee Wee team opened the House League regular season with J & J Sharpening supplying the opposition and both clubs played to a 2-2 tie. Mr. Sub scored the first goal of the game. Mr. Sub was swarming around J & J's net and Travis Campbell picked up the loose puck and put it into the net. J & J scored their first goal with a 3 on 2 play. Mr. Sub fought back with Richard McCheyne scoring their 2nd goal. J & J tied up the game in the last minute of the game with their goalie on the bench. Both the Mr. Sub goalie Roger Leblanc and the J & J goalie Colin Ferguson should be praised for their great play. Ken Wright Haulage Plays Cobourg Selects On Friday, Nov. 23 the Ken Wright Atom Selects travelled to Cobourg to play the Cobourg Atom Selects and came up short with a 4 -1 loss to the home team. The Wright Haulage Selects played well but could not get anything going as they were outshot 26 - 3 with Bowman- ville's only goal being scored by Joey Bate with assist going to Justin Merkac. 1 The return match is set for Saturday, Dec. 1 and Bowmanville Bowmanville will be ready for their visitors. Bolahood's Minor Atoms Earn Tie On Saturday, November 24th Bolahoods hosted Oshawa Black Hawks for an exhibition match and skated to a five all tie. Oshawa got off to a fast start building up a 4 to 1 lead. Scoring Bolahoods' only goal in the first period was David Szabo unassisted. Bolahood's started their comeback, notching two goals in the second period. Corey Strand scored on a fine individual individual effort with Timmy Mills assisting. Kevin Ferguson narrowed the score to a 5 - 3 count with Matt Dykstra assisting. Bolahoods put the pressure on in the third period and earned the tie. Matt Dykstra notched both goals with assists going to Jeff Martin and David Szabo. Whitby 8 Bolahoods 4 On Sunday, November 25th, Bolahoods travelled to Whitby and came away on the short end of a 8 - 4 count. Bolahoods took the early lead at the 7:13 mark of the first period with Kevin Ferguson scoring with assists going to Craig Forsey and Kevin Colbourne. Whitby took a 2 -1 lead until the 3:16 mark of the first period when Craig Forsey lied the score unassisted. Whitby then scored the next four goals and never looked back. Bolahoods final two goals were scored by Matt Dykstra and Kevin Ferguson with assists going to Matt Aitken and Kevin Colbourne. Video Pee Wees Add Another Win to Record Geoff Smith earned this shut-out with some outstanding outstanding saves and the rest of the team hustled enough to win the game. Lindsay is rebuilding their team and the Toros were able to capitalize on the breaks that came their way. The first goal was scored on the power play by Phillip Green with the assistance of Jeremy Laird. There were 17 penalties in this game. The second period was a verv good one for the Toros. They scored two goals within 40 seconds, Jeff Rohr from Marc Peirce and Chris Brown and then Chris from Marc and Jeff.
