Those attending the annual dinner and meeting of Bowmanville Bowmanville Horticulture on Wednesday evening, Nov. 21, included Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Staples, Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Tamblyn, Mr. and Mrs. James Lowery, Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Baird and Mr. and Mrs. 0. Challice. Mr. Tamblyn, Tamblyn, and Mr. and Mrs. James Lowery entertained with very listenable music, saxaphone, cornet and piano. Sympathy of the community to Mr. and Mrs. Carl White and family in the loss of Mrs. White's mother, Mrs. Sulz, formerly of Vancouver, B.C. Mrs Sulz' funeral was held on Saturday morning with Rev. Milnes officiating. Happy birthday to Miss Alma Watson who celebrated on November 23rd. Many more Alma! Miss Kim Sherwin, Scarborough Scarborough Centennial College was home for the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Sherwin. Mr. and Mrs. Barry Draper and family, Mrs. Edith Taylor, all from Orono, Mrs. Bryson, Kirby, attended the third birthday party of little Miss Tamara Beckett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Beckett, Oshawa. Mrs. E. L. Gilbank returned home last week after spending several days visiting her daughter and family, Mrs. Anne Najarngen, Scottdale, Penn. U.S.A. Mrs. Thelma Guest, Concord, Ont., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Cowan. Horticulture Christmas Party A large crowd at the annual Horticulture Christmas Show and evening, Thursday, Nov: 22 in Orono United Church. The very beautiful, large Christmas tree was alight, and laden with many pairs of warm, hand-knit mittens. These are to be sent into the Bowmanville Salvation Army to be put in gift boxes. The tree was graciously donated by one of our members Mr. Dave Hinton, Taunton Road, and was a blue spruce. The president Doreen Lowery, welcomed everyone and especially the Jr. members who also had a good exhibit on display in the hall. Gladys Brown played for singing of "0 Canada" and also for the very spirited Christmas Carol sing-along. Mrs. Helen Robinson, Jr. leader, gave out the prizes for the junior members and congratulated congratulated Kevin Scott and Robin Robinson for winning most points in the show, and receiving a special gift, donated donated by I. Challice. Miss Diana Layng, Orono Museum Archives presented the prize-winning awards for slides and prints, for the Bicentennial Bicentennial special photography photography event. Mr. Gould of Gould Photography judged the classes and Miss Heidi Schmid was the big winner. Although the entry was small, some very excellent prints of buildings, buildings, scenery, etc., of Clarke Township were displayed. Mr. Gould then showed some very entertaining films on "Apple Time" and the famous "Musical Ride", by the R.C.M.P. Mrs. Diane Hamre, on behalf of council presented the Town of Newcastle award for "Most Points in Apple Contests" sponsored by Orono Horticulture (a Bicentennial Special). The happy winners were Yvonne Trafford and Donna Hutton who tied for most points. Congratulations ladies on a very splendid effort. The entries on Thursday evening in this class were imaginative and very exciting. Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Slute, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, were the capable judges and Merlin gave a very detailed detailed and informative review of the various classes. Mrs, Marion Eastabrook was winner of most points in the show and her prize was donated by Lorna Atkins. Mrs. Donna Sutherland, Bowmanville Bowmanville won the "best arrangement arrangement in show" award. The evening closed with the lunch committee of Nellie Baird, Yvonne Trafford, Donna Hutton and Anne Evans, serving a lovely lunch of fancy sandwiches, Christmas cookies and cake. Yvonne Trafford and Adelc McGill, Treasurer, handed out the prize monies and quite a number of new 1985 memberships memberships were sold earlier in the evening. Orono United Church News "Methodism", a celebration of our roots was the theme for Sunday morning's service. There was a special offering for M. & S. and the Famine Relief funds. The choir anthem "Lead Me Lord" and several extra hymns added greatly to the service. Flowers from the funeral of the late Mrs. Sulz (Mrs. White's mother). The poinset- tia from Orono U.C.W. and also flowers from the Bean - Armstrong wedding. Happy Birthday to Miss Bonnie Hardy who celebrates her birthday this Saturday, Dec. 1. Mrs. Nerce DeJonge, Mrs. Thelma Vagg, Mrs. Bertha White and Mrs. Pam Werry all in old-time costume, look part in Sunday morning service, celebrating "Methodism." Mrs. Lois McLeod, our youth Conference worker was special guest at the Hi C group meeting on Sunday evening. Lois led in singing and a special program. There will be a special youth rally on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. More information later. Next Tuesday, Dec. 4, the session will meet and Sunday, Dec. 9 will be White Gift Sunday. Color Analysis The ladies of the community enjoyed the Color Analysis program in Orono United Church last Wednesday evening evening and the M. & S. committee wish to thank Lome Hardy, Iris Lambier, Carman White, Thelma Vagg and Gerrilt DeJonge for donating draw prizes. These were won by Kim Moffat, Patsy Chatterton, Chatterton, Corrinne Coatham, Lorna Atkins and Rhoda DeJonge. All proceeds donated to M. & S. funds. Orono News Neighbours and friends of Miss Alma Watson called to wish her a happy birthday on Friday afternoon, Nov. 23 and enjoyed afternoon tea and birthday cake. Mr. and / Mrs. Brooks Cowan, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Cowan and family, Mr. and Mrs. Beverly Cowan and family, Mrs. Ronnie Cowan and Mrs. Thelma Guest all attended the 40th' wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Osborne (Mrs. Cowan's brother) held Friday evening, Nov! 23rd, in Durham Memorial 'Centre, Port Hope. Mrs. 0. Challice is spending a few days this week visiting her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Warren and their brand new baby daughter, little Amanda Marie, in Thornhill, Ont. Mr. and Mrs. John Rickaby, Copper Cliff, Ont. visited with Mrs. Dorothy Bailey and Mrs. Eileen Billings on Wednesday last. Orono Jr. Gardeners On Thursday, Nov. 22 the Orono Jr. Gardeners joined with Orono horticulture society at their annual Christmas show. There were four Junior exhibitors with 32 entries. Kevin Scott won with most points in the junior section section and Robin Robinson won for the Senior Juniors. Mrs. I. Challice donated a special prize for both. The Juniors joined with the Seniors in singing singing Christmas carols. We would like to wish everyone everyone a safe and happy holiday and invite anyone from six to 16 years who would like to join Jr. Gardeners in February. St. Saviours Church News St. Saviours held their White Gift service at the regular morning service on Sunday, Sidespersons Maureen and Bill Tomlinson and server Leanne Johnson. Thank you to all those who look part in service. Everyone of us is ministering in some way. We all have different talents and assets to give.
