King Garden Records Win By Bob Sheridan Art Hester, our top model and goaltender continued to play outstanding hockey, limiting the opposition to three or fewer goals in all four . tournament games. On Friday night we emerged victorious 4-2 over the Niagara Falls Wheelers. Joe Balson opened the scoring assisted by Dave Green and Irv Gill. Siegi Rohr then passed the puck to George Sainsbury who found Bob Marjerrison ten feet out at an impossible angle. Bob somehow drove the puck under the surprised goaltender. Grant Wright outfought the defense for the puck deep in the opposition corner and fed Ray Preston at the point. Ray then hit Hugh German with a perfect pass. Hugh fired a bullet drive along the ice from twenty feet out for our third goal. Irv Gill scored the clincher into the open net after Niagara pulled their goaltender. At 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning we met and defeated the East London Sports. Joe Balson and Dave Green each scored twice in this contest with Irv Gill who plays on the same line picking up three assists. Hugh German, Bob Marjerrison and George Sainsbury notched the other markers to give us a 7-3 victory. At 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, we clashed with the Paris Oldtimers. Dave Green opened the scoring with a very accurate shot to the top corner on passes from Balson and Bob Hellam. Bob Sheridan then took a pass from Grant Wright and fired a rocket from the right boards into the far corner past the mesmerized Paris goaltender. The goaltender, however, recovered and blanked us for the rest of the game as a resilient Paris team fought back and won 3-2 to deprive us of a bye into the Sunday finals. At 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, we lost the semi-finals 5-3 to a well-rested and rejuvenated London Sports team. Bowmanville scoring in this game was contributed by David Green with two and Irv Gill with one. Joe Balson had two assists. Roger Shingler assisted on Dave's first goal and was part of the solid defence corps of Bob Hellam, Ray Preston, Warren Townsley, Dan Girardi, Ray Crombie and Hugh German. On Friday, the team travelled to Uxbridge and came away 11-6 victors and then at home on Sunday, the team rallied late in the game to obtain a 5-5 tie with the Port Hope Panthers. In Friday's game, the Eagles opened the scoring early as John Young picked up on a rebound in front of the Bruins' net and beat Troy Bates at the 1:48 mark. This was a powerplay goal with Scott Heard and Gord Rogers earning the assists. Bowmanville increased their lead to 2-0 when Brian Keenan scored from linemates Mark Hickey and Darryl Rowe at 4:06. Just under a minute later, the Bruins got onto the scoresheet as Henry Van Kessel scored on a powerplay from Lee Brown and Scott Harper. With only nineteen seconds remaining in the first period, Uxbridge tied the score as Cliff Freckleton delivered a low shot from the blueline which beat George Kennett in the Eagles' net. Assists on this goal were given to Van Kessel and Harper. In the second period, Bowmanville scored four times in just over four minutes to take complete control of the game. At the 4:00 mark, Scott Heard used Young as a decoy on a two on one break and beat Bates in the Bruins' net. Roger Hornsby and Rogers were awarded the assists. This prompted the Bruins' coach, Wayne Redshaw to make a goaltending change. The Bruins' new goaltender Russell Joosten however, couldn't stop the Eagles' attack either. At the 5:57 mark, Brad Clemens scored on the powerplay from Bob McCann and Randy Ellis. Then Bowmanville increased its lead to 6-2 on a perfectly executed passing play involving the Heard brothers and Young who was credited with the goal at 8:04. The Bruins scored their only goal of the second period at 10:14 as they were enjoying a two-man powerplay advantage. The goal was scored from Brown who beat Scott Hooper in the Eagles' net, with assists going to Van Kessel and Sean Con very, the final goal of the period was scored by the Eagles' Andy Terry who shot what appeared to be a harmless shot towards the Bruin net. The puck caught the top right hand corner to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead heading into the final period. Dawson and German added assists for this goal which was scored at 19:29. In the concluding period, the Bruins came out flying and responded with two quick goals. First, Van Kessel scored from Todd Laroche and Harper at 2:30 and then Laroche scored from Van Kessel and Brown at 2:47. The Eagles, however, didn't lose their composure and continued to play as they had in the second period. This play paid off as Dawson scored from Randy Ellis and Clemens at the 7:17 mark. The Eagles increased their lead to 9-5 on an excellent individual play by Scott Heard. While the Bruins were on the powerplay Heard blocked a shot at his own blueline and then dashed the distance of the ice to score a shorthanded marker at 8:54. Bowmanville's next goal was scored by their most potent line, Rowe was the goalscorcr with Hickey and Keenan earning assists at 10:42. The Bruins scored their final goal of this encounter as Mike Anderson connected on a pass from Brian Stewart at the 13:03 mark. Bowmanville closed the scoring at 13:49 as Keenan scored his second of the evening wilhllickey and Rob Ellis providing the assists. In Sunday's game it look the Eagles only twelve seconds to gel onto the scoreboard as Dawson scored from Clemens and Rogers after the Panthers' nctmindcr Ed Carpenter had mishandled the puck. The Panthers however got this goal back at 3:36 when Pat Roy scored from Todd Douglas and Tony Wakcly on the powerplay, Port Hope look the lead when Roy scored his second goal from Wakely and Keith Woodward at the 7:21 mark. It didn't take the Eagles long to notch the score at 2-2 as Clemens scored from Randy Ellis and Dawson at 8:35. Just over a minute later, Port Hope took the lead once again as Scott Hallowed connected from Garth Miller and Woodward. With the Panthers enjoying a powerplay situation, they increased their lead to 4-2 at 17:04 as Regan Brown scored with Woodward and Mike Robinson earning the assists. Then with a delayed penalty going to.be called against the . Panthers, the Eagles' Rowe . scored from Hickey and Terry , at 17:28. " ■ The second period featured only one goal. It turned out to be the Panthers final goal of the game as Roy earned his hat trick for the evening. The goal was scored at the 9:47 mark and Steve Stec had the lone assist. The period also saw the Eagles' coach Paul Robinson get ejected from the game for disputing a call made by referee Jerry Blodgett. The third period was filled with penalties by both teams but it was the Eagles who scored twice to earn the 5-5 tie. Dawson scored on the powerplay thus acquiring his third point of the evening at 11:09. Brothers Randy and Rob Ellis provided the assists on the play. With just under four minutes to play in the game a* mini-brawl erupted. The major combatants were the Eagles' Terry and the Panthers' Stec. The other players involved in this fracas were the Eagles' Young and Rob Ellis and the Panthers' Woodward and Jordon Brown. All four of these players received additional two-game suspensions for their involvement. After all the penalties had been assessed the Eagles found themselves a man short for two minutes. This however seemed to inspire the team even more and twenty seconds later Rogers scored the game - tying goal from Keenan and Hickey. The Eagles are now idle until this coming Sunday when the Cobourg Cougars will provide the opposition in the Eagles' nest. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Don't forget to bring a canned good to the game to receive a reduced admission price while at the same time assisting the Salvation Army in their efforts to make someone's Christmas a bit happier. Bowmanville Golf Earns Win Over Cestle Hotel November 22 league action saw Bowmanville Golf down Castle Hotel by a 7 to 4 count. Ralph Cryderman and Mike Smith scored twice for Dave Wright's Golf gang, singles coming from Doug Crough, Wayde Preston, and Tom Dwyer. Assists were notched by Kevin Tink (three), Cryderman and Smith, two each, Doug Crough, Mark Slemon, Ron Jukic and Wayde Preston. Preston carried the puck well on several occasions. Castle Hotel rookie Brad . Prentice potted three for the Hotel in his first game of the season; Steve Simpson scored once. Assists came from Mike Mackey (three), Darrell Knox, Rick Woolner, and Bob Harness. Game Two between Norm Caruana's Deli Hawks and Three Brothers Pizza turned out to be a playoff style contest, contest, with the Hawks winning by a 4 to 3 margin. Stan Konarowski continued to impress with his abrasive two way style, and picked up two goals and an assist for the Hawks. Don Smith and Don Farrow each had a goal and an assist; Darcy Ritchie supplied a single helper. John Conboy, Randy Masterson and Pete Knowlton notched singles for the Pizza side, assists going to Bob Dwyer, Paul Dadson, Tom Laingmaid, Grant Brock, and John Conboy. Goalies Dave Rowley and Britt Murphy both played well. Town Sports held on for a two all tie against a hard charging Hunt's Photography squad in the final, in a chippy contest in which 12 minor and two major penalties were called. Jim Baker and Mark Mathews- scored for Town Sports, assists going to Gary Dusseldorp, Tim Almond, and Dale Millson. Checker's Variety Meets Opponents from Whitby On Saturday, November 24, 1984, the Checkers squad played their counterparts from Whitby. The Bowmanville Bowmanville club started the game quickly with goals on the first two shifts. First Richard MacCheyne cashed in on a play that started at the point by defenceman Brett Rosnak. Next Paul Conway backhanded backhanded home a rebound from Cory Chambers. The Whitby club tied the score with two markers early in the second period but by the end of the second period the home side had established a two goal lead again. Cory Chambers scored with an accurate shot and help from linemates Scott Selleck and Paul Conway. In the final minute a pass from Richard MacCheyne sent Kent Vanderheyden in on a break- 1 away. The third period belonged to' Whitby. They tied the game with two goals in the middle of the period. In the last two minutes of the game the opposition scored the winner and an insurance marker. The Bowmanville team was guilty of sloppy clearing in their own erid throughout the period and this led to their demise. However, However, it was an exciting game between evenly matched teams.
