In the third quarter, our Redmen came out flying and took complete control of the game as they outscored the Saints 19 - 4 in the quarter to take an eleven point lead into the final quarter. In the final eight minutes of play B.H.S. played its worst quarter of ball to date as they managed only a single basket by Kelly. This gave the Saints what appeared to be an easy 63 - 48 victory. Tukker was the leading scorer for B.H.S. with nineteen nineteen points, followed by Steve Brown with twelve points, Wind with ten points and Kelly with six points. All three B.H.S. teams see more action tonight as they travel to Pickering to face the Trojans. Then on Friday at B.H.S. another group of Trojans, the R.S. McLaughlin Trojans, come to play the Redmen. Come on out see some exciting basketball. King Garden Wins Three Games Claude's Auto Body is providing a Co-op job in auto body repair for B.H.S. student Jim Pyke, shown at left in the above photo. Mr. Claude Gordon, the owner, is pictured on the right. Co-operative Education By A1 Woodlock The work of an auto body repairer is not easy - it is hard and dirty. Jim Pyke, a Grade 12 student at B.H.S. is finding that out. Jim is a Co-op student working for Claude's Auto Body at 181 King Street East in Bowmanville. Hard, dirty work doesn't seem to bother Jim as he is doing very well and enjoying what he is doing. Jim knew he wanted a career in the technical field but was unsure about specific jobs and decided to try auto body work. Although quite happy, Jim doesn't know if he could do this type of work for the rest of his life. In the meantime, he is gaining valuable job experience, diploma credits and good employer references. Also, this Co-op experience will help him make some necessary career decisions. Jim's job description includes a lot of sanding and taping. He is quite aware that any new employee must start out at the "bottom of the ladder" and thoroughly learn all the basics and fundamentals. Usually these basics and fundamentals are boring or routine tasks and the auto body repair trade is no exception. Other aspects of the job include grinding, cutting, welding and the application of various body fillers. Jim is also observing spray painting techniques. Mr. Claude Gordon is a quiet patient man and he allows the students to become more involved as their knowledge and enthusiasm dictate. Jim apparently is enthusiastic and learning quickly. Mr. Gordon recently purchased a $20,000 frame straightening device and Jim hr.-, already had some training in the use of it. ' Apprenticeships are available in the auto body repair business and if Jim does well he might have that opportunity with an employer after he graduates. He has other technical career possibilities as well and only he can make the decision. Career i decisions arc extremely difficult for young grade 13 English student at Bowmanville High School, graciously volunteered to write a review. Matthew has been involved in previous plays including "The King and I." Matthew's father, Vic Goad, is a longstanding member of the Bowmanville Drama Club. Matthew "knows the ropes" when it comes to plays. Guest Editorial : Charley's Aunt By Matthew Goad A good time was enjoyed by all who attended the final performance performance of "Charley's Aunt." I can only assess the talents of those on stage for the performance on Saturday, but I am sure that all the performers were equally suited to their roles. The characters were well casted, the costumes excellent, and Uie scenery adequate. The timing, essential to a comedy, on stage was notably well rehearsed. Bob Gill and Doug Brown did a good job of portraying portraying young English gentlemen. gentlemen. Alwyn ("Ishmael") Huigens did an impressive job when he had to assume the character of Donna Lucia d'Alvadorez, a rich widow from Brazil "where the nuts come from." The audience enjoyed the deception and subsequent misunderstandings. misunderstandings. Even the supporting roles delighted the . audience. Brassett was well interpreted by Michael James and the female characters did a fine job of depicting ladies of the late nineteenth century. Like all good comedies, predictably, everything works out in the end and they live happily ever after. Congratulations Congratulations should be extended to Mr. Sheridan, Mr. Lindop and everyone connected with the fine performance. At this time, special thanks should be extended to Mrs. Bieber and Mrs, Logan for saving our beloved set and to Mrs. Donna Kay who created "the best costumes ever made fora B.H.S. production" within within a budget of only $60.00. Without the help of the Bowmanville Bowmanville Drama Club, Charley's Aunt would not have been nearly the success that it was. in this game as can be noticed by the statistics. The Spartons had only thirteen points in the final two quarters. Had Bowmanville played the entire game with its starters starters the score could easily have reached triple digits for B.H.S. Rookie sensation Rod Tukker continues to lead the team in scoring as he connected connected for sixteen points. Steve Brown and Eric Peebles added ten points each followed by Rick Vandermolen with nine points, George Wind eight points, Henry Duewel six points and guards Jamie Baxter and Jay Kelly with four points apiece. The scoring scoring was rounded out by John Theriault's three point effort, and single baskets by Ryan Brown, Bruce Cooke and Brian Clement. The B.H.S. midget team evened their record at one win and one loss in regular season play with a 30 - 22 victory over Dunbarton. The junior team is still winless after dropping their game by a score of 54 - 41. The top scorers for Bowmanville Bowmanville were Brian Heard and Shawn Healy with nineteen nineteen and eleven points respectively. respectively. On Friday, the senior team competed in the Ajax High School Invitational Tournament. Tournament. In the team's first game against Wexford the absence of forward Tukker was definitely definitely felt as the team dropped a 71 - 55 decision. Bowmanville had its opportunities in this game but it seemed as if the ball didn't want to drop through the hoop when B.H.S. was shooting. Top scorers in this game for Bowmanville were Steve - Brown' with fourteen points and Wind with an even ten points. Peebles added nine points to the B.H.S. cause while Ryan Brown and Duewel connected for eight points apiece. The loss dropped Bowmanville Bowmanville into the consolation round of the tournament. Their second game was played against the Paul Dwyer Saints from Oshawa. Even with Tukker in the lineup B.H.S. came up short as they failed to play quality basketball for all four quarters which is a By Bob Sheridan Last Tuesday night we defeated the Whitby Marigolds Marigolds 6 - 4. Bowmanville goals were scored by Bob Sheridan with three, Joe Balson, Ray Crombie and Grant Flintoff. Grant Wright was solid in goal in this game and again on Friday night against Orono. We defeated Orono 14 - 2. Bowmanville had only eight players for this game who were obviously awesome. David Green led the scoring with seven goals. George Sainsbury had three. Hugh German and Jim Olinski each scored twice. Bob Hcllam, Grant Wright, Ron Rushak and Ray Crombie rounded out our Friday night crew. Sunday morning we defeated defeated Newcastle Jade Garden. Bob Marjerrison opened the scoring on passes from Ray Crombie and Bob Hellam. Gary Woodcock then set up Ron Hooper to even the score for Newcastle. Joe Balson took a perfect pass from Irv Gill and outshifted Leo Kelly with a beautiful move to put Bowmanville ahead 2 -1. Bob Stiles tied the score moments later but George Sainsbury scored two goals to put Bowmanville Bowmanville ahead for good. Newcastle Newcastle fought back with Bob Stiles scoring his second goal of the day with assists going to Howard Quinney and Ron Hooper. The game's final goal was scored by our den mother, Bob Marjerrison on a pass from George Sainsbury. Art Hester drew plaudits from the Newcastle opposition on his fine play in goal.
