Sympathy of the community to the Quantrill families on the loss of their mother, Mrs. Mary Quantrill. Mrs. Quan- trill's funeral was Friday, Dec. 14, from Morris Funeral Home, Bowmanville, with Rev. Fred Milnes officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Pears and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Pears, all from Orillia, were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Len Pears. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Luxton, Bowmanville, were Friday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Mercer. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Heckbert, Rebbeca and Rachel, Oshawa, were Saturday evening dinner guests of the 0. Challices. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Pears and Andrea, Newcastle, were Sunday afternoon visitors at Mr. and Mrs. Len Pears. The funeral took place Dec. 6, 1984, from Latchford Bridge, Ontario for the late Mr. William Wadell, in his 97th year. Mr. Wadell is the last of the family and was a brother of the late Mrs. Marion Evans, who predeceased predeceased him last fall. Mr. Wadell was a bank manager for the Standard Bank, here in Orono, prior to the existing Bank of Commerce. A large family gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Draper, Church Street, followed the baptism of their two daughters. There were 26 persons in attendance. Mrs. Kay Beggs, Pontypool, was a Sunday evening visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor. Town Hall Card Party The regular town hall card party was held Wednesday, Dec. 12 with a good attendance attendance and 12 tables in progress. progress. Party The ladies of Orono Ü.C.W. enjoyed a delicious pot-luck dinner on Thursday evening, Dec. 13, in the main hall of the United Church. The tables were beautifully decorated and set by the ladies of Unit No. 3 and this added greatly to the enjoyment of the dinner, and Rev. Milnes gave the blessing. Following the dinner, Christmas Carols were sung with Joyce Gray at the piano. The president, Donna Scott, welcomed everyone and read a poem and Marie Tamblyn read previous minutes. Doreen Wood presented a very encouraging financial report on the blackboard and it was evident another successful year. The ladies of Unit No. 2 led by Eileen Billings presented the Christmas story in scripture scripture and carols. A very enjoyable enjoyable treat were the lovely solos by Marion Milnes, and much appreciated by all in attendance. Citizen of the Year Awards A very large crowd was in attendance at the very first "Citizen of the Year Award" night, held Friday, Dec. 14, in the Lions Centre, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. There were 61 nominees for the awards and Councillor Ann Cowman introduced nominees to the audience. Mr. Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. introduced introduced the Ontario Bicentennial Bicentennial Medal award winners. We were happy to see our old friend Douglas Dewell one of the honoured! Orono United Church News The church was filled to capacity for Sunday morning service, with many visitors in attendance. The very beautiful beautiful Sacrament of Baptism was performed by Rev. Fred Milnes, with 10 children being baptized. Before the service Mr. Don Staples and members of the choir led the crowd in singing Christmas carols. Mr. Carl Tamblyn on cornet accompanied the singing. . Members and leaders of the Explorers attended in a group and again performed the lighting lighting of Advent Candles. Those taking part - Wenda Den Hollander; Andrea Trafford; Cindy Jerome and Dana Stagg. Little Miss Carrie Henderson was the reader. Following the lighting, the group presented several Christmas selections, "Mary's Lullaby to Infant King" and "Away in a Manger", assisted by the choir. During the service Rev. Milnes introduced Mr. Mike Hack, who is with "Operation World." Dickson 983-5611 or for Upper Room please contact Bonnie Luke 983-5090. Explorer Christmas Party The Explorer girls met last Wednesday, Dec. 12, for their Christmas party. Mrs. Ross took the girls on an imaginary trip to Bethlehem Bethlehem to see Jesus. The girls and leaders had a gift exchange and enjoyed a delicious lunch of birthday cake for Jesus. Youth Rally A good attendance, Sunday evening with visitors from Hampton, enjoyed the fellowship fellowship with the Hi C members. David Milnes welcomed everyone and introduced Mrs. Lois McLeod, who led in some spirited singing, which was much enjoyed by all. Our guest speaker Mr. Mike Hack was introduced and gave us a very enthusiastic resume of his wife's work with "Operation "Operation Mobilization." This group shares the Good News gospel across cultural ' barriers, across the world, and has been in operation 26 years. Mike and his young wife are here in Canada for a year's rest and then on with their work. A video on Keith Green was presented and again presented presented a challenge to everyone to spread the good news of Christmas with others. An excellent display of literature and guidance materials added to the evening's enjoyment. Rev. Milnes thanked Mike and Rose for coming to us, and wished them well in God's work.
