l TORONTO ZOO -- is offering a Christmas with animals from around the world when the annual Christmas Treats Walk takes place on Sunday, December 30. Admission to the zoo is free on that day, thanks to the sponsorship of McDonald's Restaurants and Coca-Cola Limited. Participants Participants are asked to gather at the front entrance of the zoo at 10 a.m. After boarding special free Monorail trains in the Canadian Animal Domain, walkers will be taken to the Americas Station where they will end their walk at the spectacular noon feeding of the Polar bears. TTie zoo has also lined up some special surprise animal guests who will visit at points along the route. This will be a good opportunity for photographers to get some unusual Christmas pictures. At the end of the walk, visitors can stroll through the "Indoor Zoo", where tropical temperatures and exotic life abound. Lunn Program Director Ken Wright Haulage Atom Selects Outscore Pickering Thursday Night Hockey League On Friday the Atom Selects travelled to Pickering to meet the Pickering Atom Selects and came away with a 3 -1 win even though the Selects were. • playing with six of their regular regular players missing. Five had to play for their house league team and the sixth one missing missing was assistant captain Jason Moore out with a broken arm. Despite this, the remainder remainder of the team put forth • an excellent effort and called up Andrew Perkins from house league to help fill the gap. Goals were scored by Justin Merkac, Andrew Perkins and Jason Wichman with assists going to Danny Koov, Greg Cook, Chris Filler and Graig Cowles. Special mention has to go to the defensemen Tyson Pearcy, Brad Hargest, Justin Merkac and Grant Spencer who all played an excellent game backed by solid goal tending by Sarah Couch who held Pickering scoreless till the final 22 seconds of the game. The Selects' next game is Saturday, Dec. 22 at 9 a.m. in Darlington against Pickering and Saturday, Dec. 22 8 p.m. in Bowmanville against North Oshawa. Canadian Tire Minor Midgets Lose to Brooklin In exhibition play at Brooklin Brooklin on Sunday, December 2, the Brooklin - Whitby Midgets defeated Bowmanville by a score of 6 - 2. In the first period, scoring for Bowmanville were Shmyr from Campbell and Colville, and Pithie from Shmyr and Campbell. Pithie was credited with the Toros' only goal in the second period from Campbell. During the third, the Bowmanville team failed to score and came away on the losing end of a 6 - 3 score. Bowmanville 2 Markham 1 Wed., Dec. 5 Bowmanville Canadian Tire Midgets were home at Darlington Darlington for a regular league game against Markham last Wednesday evening. The game was a real end to end hockey game with lots of action. Markham scored the first goal of the game during the first period. Bowmanville remained scoreless until midway in the second period when John Edmondson found the mark with assists awarded to Fairey and Davidson. John Edmondson scored again with 3:59 remaining in the game to break the tie. Assisting on John's goal were Shmyr and Houston. Tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 12, the Canadian Tire Minor Midgets will be playing a league game against Port Perry at the Darlington Sports Centre at 8 p.m. W. Z' Ajax 2 Toros 3 In the first of two games played at Darlington on Dec. 15th, Bowmanville narrowly defeated the Ajax No. 2 team. The first period was scoreless but the hockey was entertaining entertaining with good goalkeeping and end to end play. Jeff Rohr scored the first goal with help from Ronnie Luxton and Jeremy Laird. Jeremy made many fine plays during the game laying off some good passes in front of the net. Ajax tied the score almost immediately when all the Toros seemed glued to the ice for„a fraction of a second. With' Andrew Day in the penalty box, Michael Colbourne made a fine play to keep the puck in the Ajax end he then stick handled the puck in front of the net where he lost possession, luckily to Matthew Doughty, his team mate, who scored. With 28 seconds left in the third period Ajax got the final goal when the Toros left a player unchecked unchecked in the front of the goal. This set up an exciting conclusion to the game. In the other game the Toros lost 9 -1 to the Oshawa No. 2 team. The boys did not play badly. Oshawa is an excellent team. On many shifts the Toros were just as good, however however to play with the kind of effort required shift after shift is a difficult task.
