On January 12, with a good effort from both clubs, Kool Enterprise led a surprise attack on Square Boy when they 'came out flying and scored on the first shift of the game. Both goal tenders Warren Wright and Paul Brooks played very well throughout the game. Square Boys kept plugging away as they tied the score late in the period with Ryan O'Neill doing the honors assisted by Captain Kellet and David Kichko. This same drive continued in the second period by both teams with Kool scoring the go ahead goal first. With less than two minutes left, Square Boy was put back into the game with a goal by Captain Kellet assisted by Ryan O'Neill and Brian Vandam. It was an exciting finish in the third period when the Kool team missed a glorious opportunity opportunity to score after Mr. Brooks, making the initial save, the puck rolled up to the goal line. With a wild scramble in front of the net which seemed like everyone on the ice had a poke at, it was somehow cleared away, leaving the score tied at 2 - 2. Good game boys. Buckham Transport Wins Buckham Transport minor bantams continued their very active schedule last week taking two of three and confirming confirming their dominance over home-ice. Newcastle Wins 7-3 The hard-working Newcastle Newcastle team continued to be a Toro nemesis, tying up the defense, frustrating the forwards forwards and finding the scoring bulls-eye in a rematch at Bowmanville, January 15th. Toros looked impressive in the early going with strong play by Shane Armstrong (Greg Healey and Stephen Smith) who drew first blood at 6:33 of the first. At times Toros were all over Newcastle but a hot goalie prevented scoring. Newcastle tied it up in the second setting the scene for a third period battle. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, the battle was lopsided lopsided as Newcastle found the mark, pumping in six goals answered only twice by Buckham: Troy Mutton (Nicky Dennis) and Tony Van Hoof (Shane Armstrong) going down to defeat 7 - 3; Red Wings Mismatched Video Pee Wees Win Tourney During the Ship's Company dinner on Saturday night, Officer Cadet Lillie Roche received her Acting S.Lt. Gold Bars. The presentation was made by Lt. Don Foster, Commanding Officer of R.C.S.C.C. Bowmanville. For some of the boys on this team going to Bancroft was a return to an annual tournament tournament which last year proved to be embarrassing. This year was a complete contrast as the boys emerged champions. The first game was against Lakefield and the result was a 3 -1 win for the Toros. Phillip Green played the best game of his season beating the opposition opposition to the puck and generally proving to be a tough competitor. competitor. It could be that he was inspired by the presence of his grandparents but in any event it helped the team. The first goal was scored by Jpff Rohr with assists going to Andrew Day and Jeremy Laird. Lake- field were tough competitors and kept the Toros off balance and eventually tied the score. Their toughness .cost them a penalty late in the game and Jeremy Laird, Jeff Rohr and Jeff Flintoff combined to put the Toros ahead. The game remained this way until late in the third period when Jeff Rohr, Jeff Flintoff and Phillip Green scored the insurance goal. 11 Black Hawks 1 Toros 3 Early in the first period the Black Hawks scored their lone goal even though the contest appeared quite even at the time. This was a bit of a shock to Bowmanville and they tried very hard to equalize. Geoff Smith, the Toros goal keeper was required to make many fine saves throughout the game and held the team in the contest until Jeff Rohr and Phillip Green produced a tying goal. The new forward line of Michael Colbourne, Gilbert Holder and Ryan Putman were then responsible for the next goal and started to play with a good deal of confidence, their defensive skills helped considerably and it appears that the coaching Ladies Monday Night Bowling 5 points - Jean Harness - 5512 pins ; 5 - Donna Harness - 5377 ; 4 - Sheila Roberts - 5330; 3 - Sharlene DeHart - 5658; 3 - Lynda Nickerson - 5211; 3 - Francine Wright - 5109; 3 - Jackie Braybrook - 5092; 2 - Nancy Living - 5254; 2 - Donna Stainton - 5180; 2 - Pat Hetherington - 5067; 2 - Fern Bradley - 5062; 2 - Barb Osborne - 4919. Late in the third period Jeff Rohr scored into an empty net with help from Jeremy and Jeff Acheson. Jeff is now teamed up with Jeff Flintoff on defence and seems to have the necessary skills to become an excellent defenceman. Final Game Toros 3 Stirling 2 This championship game was very exciting, both teams gave everything they had, they both hit goal posts, missed open nets, scored good goals and tried right up to the end. The first period was scoreless scoreless but early in the second Marc Peirce, Chris Brown and Matthew Doughty made some good passes to open the scoring. The new line scored the next goal this time Gilbert from Ryan and Michael, it was a strange goal from a sharp angle but they all count. This luck advantage then switched to Stirling when they scored a similar goal and so a tight game developed. Ronnie Luxton made some fine plays keeping the puck in the Stirling end and the Toros eventually scored their third goal, this time Michael scored assisted by Gilbert and Ryan. In the third period Stirling got a break away and Geoff made a superb play to stop the resulting shot. From this time on Stirling kept pressing and eventually scored with two minutes left in the game. With the score 3 - 2 a dramatic finish to this penalty free game ensued as both teams carried the puck up and down the ice, both teams were called for intentional off sides creating tense moments but the Toros did prevail and won the game. Jeff Flintoff, Matthew and Jeff Rohr were nominated as MVP's during the tournament and Geoff was nominated MVP by the mothers. After the presentations, Stirling made an arch of sticks for the jubilant Toros to exit under while the Bowmanville parents chanted three cheers for Stirling. The Little NHL Red Wings were mismatched against the Toros on January 19 at Darlington. Off to a strong start, Toros quickly hemmed the Red Wings in, mercilessly pounding pucks at their goalie who played well despite the deluge. The line of Greg Healey, Shane Armstrong and Stephen Smith continued to shine with their successful hustling style of play. Greg Healey driving down the left wing was up-ended but still managed to direct a pass into the slot for the waiting Stephen Smith who quickly directed it in (assist also to Neil Taylor). A few minutes later Tony Van Hoof and Doug Lever in a fine passing attack put the puck on Nicky Dennis' stick who, put Buckham ahead 2-0. In the second Greg Goode streaking in on the right wing let go a blistering drive into the glove of the recoiling goalie who dropped it like a hot potato into the net (assists to Jim Pithie, Dean Baum- hauer). A few minutes later Red Wings intercepted a clearing pass and were on the scoreboard, but within seconds Toros retaliated when Tim Powers hustled along the boards and cleared a pass to Nicky Dennis in thé - slot ( assist also to Jim Pithie). " Play became sloppy in the third and the Red Wing goalie took advantage shutting out the Toro offense to end the game 4 -1. Congratulations to Derek Biss for a fine performance performance in goal. Port Perry Downed 3-2 That evening the team returned returned to duplicate their; efforts of the afternoon. With no scoring in the first tension rode high going into the second as the team desperately desperately wanted to avenge a previous defeat to Port Perry. When Port Perry scored two fast ones fans feared the loss of their home ice supremacy. However, the Healey, Armstrong, Armstrong, Smith line turned on the jets scoring two within seconds of each other - first Greg Healey then Shane Armstrong, Armstrong, to end the period in a tie. The third period was end to end with individual goalies frustrating attackers " until 3:33 when Neil Taylor blasted a high rising shot from the point to put the game away 3 - 2 (assists to Tim Powers and Troy Mutton).
