By Sam Laskaris The Bowmanville Cowan Pontiac Eagles finished off their regular season with two more victories this past week. Last Tuesday the team travelled travelled to Lakefield and beat the Chiefs 6 - 4. Then on Sunday the Eagles trounced the Little Britain Merchants 8 -1 in the Bowmanville Memorial Arena. In Lakefield on Tuesday night, the Chiefs' Dave Morgan opened the scoring at the 3:31 mark of the first period with Rob Headon and Kevin Gilders earning the assists. After a pair of Lake- field defenseman got tangled up at the Eagles' blueline Randy Ellis was given a breakaway opportunity on Chiefs' netminder Tim Hill. Ellis made no mistake with this chance and thus tied the game for the Eagles at 7:12 with Brian Heard earning the lone assist on the play. The Eagles went ahead 2 -1 at the 11:13 mark as the teams were playing with three skaters apiece. Brian Heard won a faceoff in the Chiefs' zone and Andy Terry scored with his powerful shot. Lake- field's Andy Ogilvie tied the game at 15:24 with a power- play goal from Dave Bodrug and Paul Lasch. In the second period only one goal was scored. The Eagles' Terry had just come out of the penalty box when he found himself streaking down the ice on a 2 on 1 break with Tim Preston. Preston passed the puck to Terry who scored to give the Eagles a 3 - 2 lead. The Eagles went ahead 4-2 in the third period as Gord Rogers delivered a shot from the point which caught the top left-hand corner of the net. This goal which took most of the players and spectators by surprise was assisted by Dayrell Rowe at the 2:12 mark. At the 8:02 mark Chris Palmer scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway to cut the Eagles' lead to 4 - 3. Only forty-four seconds later the game was tied as Rob Gilders scored on the powerplay from Ogilvie and Brad McFadden. The game-winning goal came off the stick of Brian Heard at the 16:48 mark. Scott Heard was banging away at the Chiefs' netminder's pads and this effort resulted in the puck popping loose and right onto the stick of brother Brian who easily deposited it in the net. The Eagles got an insurance marker on the powerplay at the 19:02 mark. Chris Dreossi won a faceoff outside the Chiefs' blueline and found an open path right to the Chiefs' net. Dreossi made no mistake with this opportunity in beating beating netminder Hill. At home on Sunday, Eagle netminder Scott Hooper was just over three minutes away from recording the league's second shutout this year when his bid was spoiled. The Eagles with a couple of key players out of the lineup played a rather inspired game for their regular season finale. Rowe opened the scoring for Bowmanville at 5:33 of the initial period with assists credited to Brian Heard and Brad Clemens. Rowe then scored his second of the evening evening at 14:29 from Mark Hickey and Glenn German. In the second period the Eagles' exploded for five goals. Only forty-two seconds into the period Hickey started things rolling when he scored from Rowe. Hickey's second goal of the night came at 7:20 JAN. Canada's Best 25,26,27 : Hot Rod. Custom Car. Truck and Bike Show on the powerplay with Rowe and Pierre St. Amand earning the assists. Ellis increased the Eagles' lead to 5 - 0 when he backhanded backhanded an unassisted marker past Ron Stewart in the Merchant's goal at the 13:17 mark. The score then became 6 - 0 as Dreossi scored on the powerplay powerplay from Preston and German at 14:24. Only thirty seconds later German scored the most unusual goal of the evening. German took a shot from the point which was originally stopped by Stewart. The puck deflected high into the air and behind Stewart into the net. Clemens and Scott Heard picked up assists on this play. In the third period Hickey earned his hat trick goal at the 13:32 mark. Rowe picked up his fifth point of the evening by assisting on this play. At 16:47 Hooper's shutout bid was broken when Kevin Barker scored from Rob Louttit. This turned out to be the game's final goal. The Eagles finished the regular season with an impressive impressive record of 19 wins, four losses and five ties. Heading Heading into the playoffs the team is enjoying an undefeated streak of seventeen games. Now a totally new season begins - the playoffs. This year all eight teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. The Eagles since they finished in first place during the regular season have first crack at choosing their league quarterfinal quarterfinal opponents. The team has chosen to play the Uxbridge Bruins who finished in the eighth and final spot. This series will be a best four out of seven series. Although Although the schedule had not been officially made up at the time of this writing, expect a game to be in Uxbridge on Friday. The Eagles would then host the next two games of the series. Those games would be played on Sunday and Tuesday in the Bowmanville Bowmanville Arena. House League Standings Novice: W L T F A Pts. A lot has happened to house league hockey since it was taken over from the town by volunteers. Normal problems have risen and been resolved. There are, however, four projects projects that are being tackled by the house league executive that are a little out of the ordinary. The purchase of twenty complete sets of goalie equipment is high on the priority list. The equipment QKP presents BIG ENTERTAINMENT PACKAGE ***************** *********** MEET ************************* FEATURES Dick Clark's 32 Ford Hot Rod American Graffiti Over 250 of the World's Wildest Custom Cars, Hot Rods, Vans, Trucks and Bikes Artistry in Iron - a 45 foot show trailer with North America's Best Harley Davidson Collection 200,000 Car Crashing Monster Truck - the All American Ivan's Cosmic Cruiser Unlimited Show Bikes The latest in Show Speed Products on display Ronnie Hawkins and Hawks - PERFORMANCE DAILY John Williams & Sons World Champions Romeo and Pharazon Dancers Tribute to Michael Jackson and Prince Miss Auto World 10 Sunshine Girls Racing Celebrities and Show Car Personalities ALL AMERICAN MISS AUTO WORLD DICK CLARK'S 250 SHOW CARS JOHN WILLIAMS RONNIE HAWKINS «STIUUISiT TTC Service Available SHOW HOURS: Frl. -- 12 Noon ■ Sal. -- 10 a.m. - Sun.-- 10 a.m. - 11 p.m, 11 p.m. 6 p.m. 0 E3 Exhibition Place Toronto Information 686-1451 inherited from the town, due to age and state of repair will not last too much longer so it must be replaced at an anticipated cost of around $8,000.00. Aside from the fund raising efforts of the house league itself, financial support is coming from the house league mothers association as well as in the form of donations from local business and industry. To date over 25 per cent of the goal has been reached. Project number two involves acquiring and installing a trophy display case at the Bowmanville Arena. For years now house league has been acquiring trophies, but have never had an adequate public display cabinet. The third project involves three one day tournaments during the March school break for the Novice, Atom and Bantam divisions and another on March 30th for the Pee Wees. The Kinsmen Club of Bowmanville will be administering their first annual Novice Tournament. House League would be very pleased to hear from other Service Clubs or interested groups who would also be interested in doing the same as the Kinsmen, for the other divisions. The fourth project involves preparing for next year, in particular deciding on the player registration fee. As the major cost is the rental of the arenas, representatives from both the House League and All-Stars conducted a survey of surrounding municipalities. Based on the findings a presentation was made to the Newcastle Community Services Planning Board. This proposed that the Town of Newcastle consider implementing a pricing structure similar to all surrounding communities, that is a reduced hourly rate for organized children's activities and an increased rate for non-residents. In case we arè not successful with this presentation, we, like other athletic and recreation associations have applied for a town grant. The decision by the town will dictate whether there is a fee increase or not for 1985-86. While House League is working on their projects, a group of women organized the Bowmanville House League Hockey Mothers' Association. Already this group has had a number of successful ventures, like a Bake Sale and a Silver Stick Draw. The Hockey Mothers made a commitment to help fund the purchase of the needed goalie equipment and they have already achieved their financial target. Congratulations ladies and thank you. The Hockey Mothers are now having fund raising to cover cost of trophies and end of year banquet. Help is still needed by both groups so if you are interested please phone Pat Parkin (623- 6001) for Hockey Mothers or Les McCrory (623-5884) for House League. We would like to extend an invitation to the general public to come down to the Bowmanville Arena on any Saturday and watch some of the games. Admission is free and the experience is priceless.
