In a home and home mini series with Uxbridge and Port Perry to determine who will advance from this area, the local lads faced an up-hill battle. This was a one-sided contest which was dominated by Port Perry from the opening opening face-off, as they outshot Bowmanville 45 - 4 and out- ' scored them 8 -1. Only the stellar work of goaltenders Jason Hiscock and Chris Albin who earned First Star Honours kept the score from climbing into double figures. Second Star was Tom White and Third Star was Bryan James. Scoring the lone Bowmanville marker was Todd Banks. Team spirit is still high and hopefully the boys will rebound from this loss, as they have done all season against Uxbridge on Monday night. Following the Port Perry game, the Toros travelled to Orono for an exhibition match where they skated to a 5 - 4 come from behind victory, Although they were outshot 25 - 21 on the game, the Bowmanville boys never gave up, getting third period goals from Brendan Donohue and Brad Banks (his second of the game) to earn the win. Other Bowmanville scorers were Kevin Farrow and Todd Banks. Single assists were awarded to Bucky Wicks, Martin D'entrement, Bryan James, Dave Smith, Greg White, and Todd Banks. Shawn McFadyen picked up two assists. Game Stars were as follows - No. 1 Brad "Boomer" Banks, No. 2 Bryan James and No. 3 Greg White. Brooke Clemens who is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the Minden Tournament is certainly certainly missed on the forward line. Hopefully, he will be back in the line-up this week. King Garden Loses Two Games By Bob Sheridan Art Hester played two solid games in the Bowmanville nets but was defeated by one goal in contests on Friday and Saturday. On Friday night in Bowmanville Bowmanville Arena Bob Hellam opened the scoring after only forty seconds of play, taking a pass from George Sainsbury. Joe Balson then made it 2 - 0 with his unique and deceptive back hand shot. The New-, castle team fought back and Ron Slack scored on passes from Tony Jones and Brad Derrick. Bob Sheridan who centred a line with Jim Olinski and Roger Shingler took a perfect pass from Jim at the blue line and using Roger as a decoy raced in and slid a back-hand shot between Grant Wright's feet. The Newcastle team is to be given great credit as they rallied to come back from one and two goal deficits on three occasions in this game. Ron Hooper scored with assists going to Stan Bozak and Phil Fox. Tony Jones tied the score from Dave Root and Jerry Dost in the final minute of the first period. Grant Wright, on loan from our team, played well in the' Newcastle net but he was victimized by a Roger Shingler blast from the corner which deflected in off a Newcastle defender. Again Newcastle tied the score as Ron Slack notched his second from Brad Derrick. Bob Stiles scored with assists to Slack and Derrick. Hugh German . and Grant Flintoff then broke in, two on one, with a beautiful > .four way passing play that left a mesmerised Grant Wright helpless as Flintoff scored in the open corner. Grant Flintoff, Flintoff, minutes later, broke in using Hugh as a decoy and picked the near corner with superb craftsmanship. Again Newcastle fought back and tied the score midway midway through the third period as Ron Slack completed his hat trick from Hooper and Cole. For the final ten minutes, Newcastle resisted enormous pressure from the King Garden team as they tried to get the. winning counter.j With moments left Bob Stiles brokenn across the blue line and Tired the puck behind the Bowmanville goal. Ron Hooper gave a quick pass to Doug Cole who had pinched in from the blue line and Doug scored on a screen shot along the ice from ten feet out. There was only one second left on the clock as Newcastle won the cliff-hanger 7 - 6. Orono 4 - Bowmanville 3 On Saturday afternoon in Orono Art Hester again lost a heart-breaker 4 - 3. Bill Latchford, Bob Hellam and Hugh German scored for Bowmanville, Jerry Garnet and Bugden for Orono. Junior West, that grand old man of - the Orono team batted a bouncing puck out of the air to tie the score. In the third period Jerry Garnet scored the winner to hand King Garden its second defeat in as many days. Non-Contact Hockey HON A We've got Hondas for Immediate Delivery... and We're Dealing! In Saturday's first game, Barrett Electric and Clinic Pharmacy played to a 1 to 1 tie. It was not until 15:29 in the second, that Clinic's L. Jay, set up by D. Leppert on a powerplay, managed to break the 0 to 0 deadlock. Things looked good for Clinic until, with :58 left on the clock, D. Smith, on a shovel pass from "Farmer" Evans, with R. Watts also assisting, managed to put one behind the Clinic netminder, ending this well-played contest 1 to 1. R. Stainton stopped 28 shots for Barrett and his counterpart, counterpart, J. Moczulski handled 25 for Clinic. These two teams lead the league in penalties; in this game a total of nine were assessed, with Clinic taking five. Twin Brand Orchards got off to a good start in Saturday's second game, as they scored the only goal late in the first, and held a 1 to 0 lead over Shopper's Drug Mart until the third period. Despite having a powerplay opportunity in the second, resulting from a Shopper's coaching staff mistake (too many men on the ice), Twin Brand was unable to score and increase their lead. In the third the lead changed hands as a total of six goals were scored, A two-goal effort from Shopper's T. Klawitterin the last five minutes almost proved to be the end for Twin Brand. D. Rickard scored twice for the Beasties, his last one coming with :20 remaining remaining in the game, and it was just enough as Twin Brand defeated Shopper's 4 to 3, Shots on goal were marked at 36 for Shopper's and 22 for Twin Brand, with the edge in penalties going to Shopper's with four out of six. One thing is for certain, D. Forrester, Courtice Auto Wreckers' goaltender, certainly certainly will never forget the size, shape, and colour of a puck! In Sunday's first game against the Flying Dutchman, this netminder faced 35 shots, while his team mustered up only 12 shots in return. Courtice jumped out to an early lead with goals by P. Henderson and J. Mather, and it looked like an upset was in the offing. Never being a team to quit, the Dutchman came back with four unanswered goals in a row, with J. Smith scoring two, and singles by B, Pearce andD. Homan, in their team's effort. This game was not as onesided onesided as it appeared and was excellent to watch, with only five minor penalties being handed .out, the Flying Dutchman taking three, as • they defeated Courtice Auto Wreckers 4 to 2. San Marino's found themselves themselves temporarily behind by two goals in the second game on Sunday, as they faced Toby's Pub. A pair of goals by S. Pollard gave Toby's their early lead, which held until mid-way through the second, when B. Hazelton finally scored for the "Chargers." Three more singles by San Marino's D. Norton, E. Strand and, with only two seconds to go, on a long shot from the opposite end of the rink, R. Hooper completed the scoring. The final score was 4 to 2 in favour of San Marino's, who outshot Toby's 27 to 19 and led in penalties 5 to 2. Teams are reminded of the General Meeting for elections on Wednesday, Feb. 13,1985. Checker's V ariety Records Two Wins The Checkers Variety Pee Wee Selects chalked up a pair of wins this past week. They seem to have solved the problem problem of how to put the puck in the net . as they turned on the red light no less than 15 times in'the two outings, On Tuesday, January 15, the squad entertained the pee wees of Newcastle Village. In two previous meetings this season, the villagers eked out narrow victories. This time the home crew were in complete complete control as they dominated dominated their opponents both offensively offensively and defensively. Mike Gallant scored once and assisted on two goals. Jamie Lever and Larry Perris each had an assist. Ted Groves put in the tie goal late in the third period. Assists went to Noble (two), Balsom, Perris, Beck, Gallant, Page and Romano. Bell Toros Lose Opener Saturday, January 19, 1985 saw the Bell Toros open their playoffs against Cobourg, losing a close 4 - 3 decision. It was obvious from the first whistle that Cobourg's game plan was intimidation and you might say it paid off temporarily temporarily as the Bell boys fell behind 2 - 0 by the end of the first period. The second however saw a turn of the tide as the Bell boys fought back and on a goal by Eric Janssens, who played a sound game, brought the Bell squad to within one before the end of the period. Assisting on the goal were Troy Harness and Kevin Flintoff. The third period was only seconds old when Brad Carnegie from Mark Tripp and Britt Cole knotted the score. However, tenacious play by Cobourg resulted in two goals before Bowmanville could find the mark again. This goal came with 22 seconds left from Craig de Blois, assisted by Mark Tripp and Brad Carnegie. Time however, was not on the Bell boys' side and as the game ended the boys were mounting a serious attempt to tie the round robin game. The Bell team play their next game Saturday, January 26 at Darlington with Peterborough Peterborough as their round robin opponent. By The Rookie This past weekend, the team participated in a tournament in Peterborough. The first game was played on Friday afternoon, against a tough 9 and 10 year old Atom team from Millbrook, losing the game 4 - 0. On Saturday, the Checkers team played two more games, both against 9 and 10 year old teams. The first, against Hastings and came away with a 2 - 2 tie. Although the Toros seemed to carry the play, the Hastings goaltender displayed some solid goaltending, robbing the Checkers boys on numerous scoring opportunities. The second and final game was played against Bancroft in the afternoon, Bancroft winning the game 7 - 2 and eliminating Bowmanville from further competition. What was gained from the tournament was the fun the kids can have, buying or trading hockey pins and meeting meeting players from other areas. Honourable mention to all team members, for displaying some fine plays and good sportsmanship - particularly for trying to reach a higher level. Upcoming events: 23 Jan.
