On Saturday, January 12, Mrs. Charlotte Hendry hosted a birthday party in honour of sister Alecia Spencer, who is a resident of South Haven Nursing Home. About twenty sisters, sisters-in-law and nieces made this a great day for Alecia, when they attended her party. Mr. and Mrs. Vance Cooper, Oshawa, visited on Saturday afternoon with her sister, Mrs. Kathleen Kimball. Last Monday, Mrs. Bessie Dean entertained the ladies of the Euchre Club. Mrs. Eileen Reid and Palsy, Bowmanville, were Friday evening dinner guests of Mrs. Gladys Wood. Marie Pedwell introduced guest speaker, Shirley Rogers, a Pathfinder Leader who was chosen to accompany ten girls to International International Camp at Adelboden, Switzerland. The group experienced hiking, climbing, etc., while staying at the Camp Chalet, after which they toured the country using Swiss Rail passes and youth hostels. The slide show and mounted post-cards and badges were enjoyed by all. Meeting On Wednesday afternoon January 16th, fourteen ladies met at the home of Mrs. Pal Windall for the first U.C.W. meeting of 1985. The meeting opened with a lovely prayer by Mrs. Ruth Robinson, the President, and also a poem about a dollar and a cent. The hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth" was sung followed by a Bible reading by Bernice Stark and a beautiful reading and a prayer by Ellen Farrow. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Gloria Todd and Margaret Todd gave the treasurer's report. Those with birthdays this month were Trudy Souch, Margaret Todd and Ellen Farrow. Ruth Robinson then turned the meeting over to the new President, Sherrill Souch who made a nice, little speech, The business discussed was the World's Day of Prayer to he held on Friday afternoon March 1st. Newtonville Happenings The Hall Board held an open meeting at the Hall on Wednesday evening with 14 present including Diane Harare. Welcome by Wallace Boughen, followed by secretary secretary report and the treasurer's report were given. Two waste cans are on order for the washrooms as requested requested by the Department of Health. The slate of officers for the next two years are Chairman Wallace Boughen, Assistant - Maurice O'Neill, Secretary - Olive Henderson, Assistant -, Doreen Green, Treasurer - Doris Tompkins, Caretaker - Inez and Wallace Boughen. A jellied salad with cookies and a cup of tea brought the meeting to a close followed by a sociable time, The U.C.W. will meet next Wednesday evening, January 30th, in the Sunday School with Mary Vinkle in charge of the program. They'll be attending the most comprehénsive series of lectures and seminars in the region when they come to the fifth annual Farmer's Week at the Kemptville College, February 11 -16. Donald MacDonald, Coordinator Coordinator for the program, says -the week will give farmers a chance "To tune in to new methods and new ways of doing things." Talk will range from the profitability of forages and cost control, to filing farm income tax. Each day of the week has been set up to look after a specific commodity or farm group. The largest group is expected to attend the first day, February 11, when Eastern Ontario dairy farmers will, among other things, be talking about insurance, profitability and reproductive problems in herds. On Tuesday, Ralph Barrie, former President of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, will speak on the Beef Marketing Agency Report. Wednesday will be devoted to managing the farm financially. On Thursday, designated Crops Day, speakers from the University of Guelph, Agriculture Canada, and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food will join local farmers in presenting the most recent trends and research results in cropping programs. The talk by Dr. Harvey Voldeng will focus on the region's newest cash crop, soybeans. Other topics will include what's new in forages, cereal management, and fertilizing for maximum profits. A Home Management Day has been scheduled also for Thursday, and will include such topics as stress management and market gardening. The Pork Day on Friday will includé a market outlook along with an examination of the industry in Holland and Denmark. Both the Sheep and Goat sections have been scheduled for Saturday. The sessions will emphasize practical skills, health care and marketing. "Alive Together in Christ." The choir sang "Teach me to Pray." On January 27th our annual meeting will begin at two ; o'clock following a pot luck ' luncheon. Sunday afternoon in the church at two o'clock a baptismal service was held officiated by Rev. John Peters.
