i SMALL TALK By Donna Fairey The dictionary describes describes "the blahs" as a state of boredom and discomfort. And though Webster doesn't say it, we all know it's an affliction which traditionally traditionally strikes shortly after the new year and disappears with the first crocus. Moreover, the blahs are totally unpredictable, unpredictable, varying in duration and severity from victim victim to victim. One person person may suffer a mild case for a brief period while another may boot around in the pits for several weeks. Then there's the rare untouched untouched - the lucky individuals individuals apparently blessed with an immunity immunity to the disease. Indeed, some people are affected to the extent extent that medication is required in order to ease the mental anguish. anguish. I once knew a person who suffered severe severe cases of the blahs and could count upon an annual bout which lasted anywhere from six weeks to three months. Moreover, she could almost determine determine to the day when the illness would begin and perceived the experience experience with dread. But my own January encounter with the blahs prevented prevented it. In fact, it was the fall which seemingly seemingly set off a hail of minor disasters that culminated in a giant crescendo before my turn at the blahs ended. It started off two weeks ago as I rushed to a photo assignment. It was icy and next thing you know I became a large fur ball, skidding along the sidewalk on my stomach. It was a long skid for there was plenty of time for mortification. mortification. It's difficult to be gracious when you're crawling around the main street on all fours trying to retrieve your purse and camera equipment from the gutter. How lucky, I thought, that no bones were broken. broken. How fortunate I didn't rip a sleeve from my fur coat. But I've always always believed that if at first you don't succeed, keep trying until you get it right. Two days later I was wallpapering wallpapering when I fell backwards backwards off the top rung of a ladder. It was an incredible incredible feat. It's a narrow narrow kitchen and I managed managed to miss the countertop, countertop, stove, fridge and dishwasher before making a three point landing on the cushion floor. Again, nothing was fractured. The result result was more like a complete body sprain. Anyway, the blahs continued to escalate. While daydreaming I REAL ESTATE LIMITED 181 Church St. Bowmanville, Ont.
