In case no one noticed that there has been a dearth of Yelverton News in the past couple of weeks, there is an obvious explanation - we didn't report any. The reason is that with plain good luck and nothing else, we escaped our first major winter storm by the skin of our teeth by taking a two week vacation. Corrie and I had the pleasure pleasure of flying to San Juan, Puerto Rico where we climbed aboard the Carla Costa and embarked on a weeks' Caribbean Cruise. From San Juan we cruised to the Dutch colony at Curacoa - a rather impoverished impoverished island without too much going for it judging judging from our tour of same, to the Port outside Caracas, Venezuela where passengers passengers toured that interesting city. We had an opportunity to climb aboard the gigantic luxury liner which was also in Port - the Royal Princess - the largest and newest of the Princess luxury liners of the "Love Boat" series - a beautiful ship with most luxurious appointments. Next stop was at Grenada - the spice island where we toured the island. No visible visible signs of their recent military escapades could be seen. Local residents had nothing but praise for the U.S. invasion. Our tour guide had spent two years in prison prior to the invasion invasion without so much as a trial because of his suspected suspected opposition to the previous regime. Our next island stop was Guadiloupe - the French colony. A very interesting port town with excellent duty free opportunities opportunities for those who enjoy French perfumes and other items of French origin. On to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands - a real mecca for tourists because of its duty free status and a very interesting interesting and colourful city as well. One of the "tourist traps" most frequently visited visited was the lengendary home of "Bluebeard" who was credited with disposing of several of his wives before before his last wife disposed of him. From St. Thomas back to San Juan where we spent an enjoyable week at the beach resort of Dupont Plaza which is located on the Atlantic side of the island. island. The greatest threat to anyone with a healthy appetite appetite on these cruises is the culinary temptations with mountains of mouth watering watering delicasies all day long from 7 a.m. to the midnight buffet. Ours was an Italian ship and provided an Italian Italian cuisine as well as everything everything else. One of Cor- ries more poignant memories will no doubt be that of being selected by the Captain of our ship as dancing dancing partner to lead off the Captain's Ball - quite an honour indeed. Quite a change to arrive back home to be wakened by the snow plow rattling up our side road first thing in the morning in contrast to the sound of the Atlantic surf beating endlessly on the shore outside our hotel window, or letting the beach sand sift through your fingers and toes in that 80 - 90 degree F temperature temperature vs. snow flakes sifting down your neck at a temperature temperature well below freezing. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. Perhaps we shall elaborate on our visit to the interesting city of old San Juan which originated in 1493 at a later date. As our reader must realize by now, one of the greatest pleasures of taking a vacation is not only the vacation vacation itself, it is boring the heck out of your listeners (or readers), talking about it when you get back home. Low rates make state Farm homeowners insurance a good buy. Our service makes it even better, Call me for all the details.
