WHITBY 668-6828 TAX, LICENCE, FREIGHT, PREP EXTRA Kari Lynne Hillis, daughter of Don and Sylvia Hillis of R.R. 1, Kendal, became the wife of Kirk Marshall Cox, son of Ron and Shirley Cox of Peterborough, on August 4th LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir: Last Tuesday evening a group of over 150 people attended a 'dinner' at Trinity College School. It was sponsored by a committee of lay people in support of "Ten Days for Development' an educational programme of the relief and development agencies of the Anglican, Catholic, . Lutheran, Presbyterian and United Churches of Canada. We drew lots for our table seats. About 20 per cent of the people representing the "have" people of the planet ate a full turkey dinner. The rest of us represented the "have nots". We probably fared better than most of them, with a bowl of thin soup and a bowl of curried rice, and we were soon scrounging scraps of meat! We read, discuss and dismiss statistics; but this was an attempt to make those statistics a reality to us. The guest speaker Robert J. Moore, former High Commissioner to Canada from Guyana, who now resides in Canada, was eloquent and he has a profound insight into the perils facing our planet. However, even though he left us in no doubt as to the precarious state of our global village, he made us realize that we have the responsibility and opportunity to change the attitudes and actions of our decision makers (at all levels - federal, provincial and municipal) in Government and business sectors so that we move forward to a more equal distribution of the world's resources, and that we (singly and collectively) continue to bring pressure to bear in order that the 'rape and pillage' of our natural resources ceases. Dr. Moore quoted the Pope as saying that the "new word for Peace is development". We have progressed and the Churches who sponsored this programme arc to be commended - I hope we can soon move forward to the point where it is an inter-faith event rather than ecumenical.
