( 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 6,1985 Kool Beats Square Boy Pizza On Saturday, February 2, third place Kool Enterprise Bantams took on first place Square Boy with the Kool boys desperately needing these two points in their quest to continue continue moving up in the standings. standings. The game started off very strongly with Kool carrying carrying the play time and again into the Square Boys' end with them being forced into having to just clear the puck. It wasn't until the second last shift of the first period when Kool finally connected for two fast goals. Todd De- Gooyer scored the first on receiving a fine clearing pass from the corner from Sean Powers, with the second assist going to Jeff Stevens. Less than a minute later, Sean Powers flipped in a single- handed effort after catching a sloppy clearing pass by Square Boys. This two goal lead was to be shortened to one with only 2:30 left in the period. The second period saw Square Boys start to play a much better game and manage to tie the score with just over half the period to go. Despite seeing a two goal lead die away, the Kool team continued continued to press whatever advantages they were given and at 6:33 of the second, Jeff Johnson scored on a shot from the corner and deflected off a Square Boy in front of the net. Jason Vacheresse and Brent MacKay received assists on this goal by way of their fine puck control in the opposition's opposition's end. • This was the end of the scoring, making it a 3 - 2 win for Kool, but it was definitely not the end of an exciting hockey game. Kool kept up their excellent and spirited attacks into the opposing team's end and all three dofpncive combinations again and again frustrated Square Boys' attempts at the long feed pass through middle ice. This last period was a well- played game of puck control as Square Boy never really had a good scoring chance because of Kool's ability to turn from defense to offense and catch Square Boy on many two-on-one and three- on-two situations. Congratulations on a well played and enjoyable game! The Fifth Wheel B team journeyed to Port Hope on Saturday and took part in their annual Bantam tournament. The Bowmanville team made a good showing, losing the B championship to Pickering Village. In the opening game of the tournament, the home town Port Hope team provided the opposition. The closely contested game ended in a 2- all tie at the end of regulation time but Port Hope won the game after only 25 seconds of overtime play. After a scoreless second period, both teams had a busy time in the third period. Port Hope scored two quick goals and held onto a 2-1 lead until there were only 10 seconds left in the game. Paul Crago came through with the important tying goal when he scored after being set up by Paul Hindman and Brad Rushak. This comeback was shortlived shortlived with Port Hope's winning goal early in the overtime. Oshawa's Glen Stewart provided the opposition for the Toros' second game. This was a very one-sided affair with Bowmanville defeating the Oshawa team 9-0. Bowmanville scored two goals in the first period, three in the second and four in the third. Tim Smith led the Toro scoring with 3 goals, Brad Rushak had a very good tournament adding two goals, David Smith also played well and scored 2 goals. Assists went to Scott Munro (3), Paul Hindman (2), Todd Dorion (2), Brad Rushak (1), Tim Smith (1) and David Smith (1). In the B championship game, the Toros met Pickering Village. Tim Smith scored the first Bowmanville goal on a solo effort quite early in the game, giving them an initial lead. Pickering replied with 3 unanswered goals. Todd Dorion added Bowmanville's final tally late in the third period. Brad Rushak and Tim Smith earned assists. The tournament goalkeeping goalkeeping duties were shared by Scott Hanthorn and Kevin Zarosky both of whom played well. The Fifth Wheel team met Port Perry in their final playoff game on Sunday and came out on the short end of a lop-sided 14-1 score. The penalty infested game saw Todd Dorion score the first goal of the game and Bowmanville's only goal at the 20 second mark. Tim Smith and Brad Rushak drew assists. Port Perry then took over and dominated the remainder of the game. This defeat eliminated the Bowmanville team from the playoffs. TRIPLE F N. Griffioen 10, A, Vander- gaast 9, A. Bonsma 9, A. On Saturday, January 19th, Bowmanville Atom B travelled to Port Hope for a one day tournament. The first game was played at 9:05 a.m. and Bowmanville's game was against a strong Oshawa-club which showed as the final score was 6 to 1 in Oshawa's favour. Oshawa took command from the opening face-off and built up a 3-0 score before Bowmanville could hit the score sheet with Kevin Ferguson scoring and Corey Strand assisting. Oshawa (being the much larger club) went in to notch the next three goals. The boys were taught a valuable lesson in this contest as Oshawa was a much larger club and played a very aggressive style, which meant that in order to overcome this disadvantage, you must let the puck do the work which Bowmanville failed to do. Port Hope 7 Bowmanville 2 The second game of this tournament was played against a fine Port Hope squad. Bowmanville was given a lesson in playing full three periods of hockey as Port Hope never looked back in this contest and went on to victory. From the opening face-off, Port Hope kept up constant pressure and had it not been for the fine play of Darcy Veitch the score would have been much higher. Bowmanville finally woke up and started to play hockey like coach Osmond would like them to and scored at the 3:52 mark of the third period with Matt Dykstra scoring and Craig Forsey assisting. Once again Mr. Dykstra found the range as he closed out the scoring with his second goal with Craig Forsey and Jeff Martin assisting. Unfortunately, time ran out and the boys realized that a 100 per cent effort is needed every shift. Oshawa Defeats Checker's The Checkers Variety Pee Wee squad were involved in two games on the weekend. They were downed very decisively by the Oshawa Park League Selects on Saturday but rebounded on a Sunday win against another Oshawa team. The Park League Selects visited the squad on Saturday, February 2. This strong entry is the newly formed cream of, the crop from the' Park League system. The Checkers crew were equally as impressive impressive for the first half of the game, playing their opponents evenly. Winger Kent Vanderheyden opened the scoring on a set up by Richard MacCheyne. Oshawa tied the match early in the second period but Kent put the homeside ahead once again, this thne cashing in on a rebound from Richard. Then the roof fell in on the Checkers crew as Oshawa pumped in five goals before the end of the second period. They were assisted by two penalties to the Checkers squad. The Park League boys added two more scores in the final period for a 7 - 2 dumping of the homeside. In spite of the score, the crew played well. They let down their concentration only for a few minutes in the second period. They were also victimized victimized by some spectacular goaltending in the Oshawa zone. On Sunday, February 3, the Bowmanville boys visited Capri Loses by Two On January 26, Square Boy met the Capri team in an action packed game with a good (team) effort. In the first period, Square Boy's rallied for their first goal with their checking and passing as Captain Kellet hit the mark, assisted by Brent Gibson and the (D.J.). Shane Crombie showing his ability and good second effort scored their second goal as he hustled down the ice, ending the period with a two goal margin. The second period saw a total of five goals being scored. The Capri team connected on the first with a good effort. Moments later, Squqre Boys' Greg Portelance tucked one away, assisted by Captain Kellet and the (D.J.). Capri then closed the gap by 1 goal at the six minute mark. Square Boy had to buckle down if they wanted this game and so it was as David Kichko scored after receiving a pass from Brent Gibson. Capri retaliated one more time late YOUTH BOWLING February 2,1985 Tyke Division Team Standings - Scooby- Doo 17, Charlie Brown 15, Bugs Bunny 13, Smurfs 10, Woody Woodpecker 10, Pac- Man 7, Spiderman 6, Chipmunks Chipmunks 2. In the third period, a few key plays were made by Square Boys as Jonathon Boyd made some good defensive plays to disrupt any further play. Another was by the (D.J.) with his consistent backchecking and passing. Mark Bums had a rough time in the corners as he did a fine job forechpcking. A well setup setup play resulted in Square Boys' last goal as Greg Portelaiice scored his second goal, : assisted by Captain Kellet and the (D.J.). Final score 5-3. Good show guys. Oshawa Christ Church at the Orono Arena. The Checkers crew started fast but their opposition proved equal to the challenge. Oshawa opened the scoring but the crew evened the match to end the first period. Centre Jeremy Snowden sniped one from the right side when winger Adam Kiff sent him in alone with a pass. The game then went scoreless scoreless until the final two minutes. The goaltending of Brett Lambert and Roger Leblanc kept Checkers in the game. However, the goaltending goaltending at the other end was equally impressive as considerable considerable pressure was applied on the Oshawa net- minder. Forward Dustin Couch, a recent convert from the blueline ranks, notched the winner with a screen shot assisted by defenceman Steve Kay. This was followed in quick succession by two more Bowmanville scores. Richard MacCheyne crossed the crease with a passout from the corner that Kent Vanderheyden Vanderheyden converted. Then Sean Snow found the mark with a perfect setup by Jeremy Snowden to close the game 4 - 1. The boys had worked very hard and were obviously pleased with their last minute success. The defensive crew of Larry Morrison, Brett Rosnak, Ken Cornish and Steve Kay played a strong game. Checker's Toros Atoms Defeat Peterborough Saturday night, Feb. 2, our Minor Atoms put up their best fight of the season and came home with a 2-1 victory over the nine and ten year old boys of the Peterborough No. 2 team. The first regular game of the season back in early October saw this same Peterborough club maul our Checker's boys "5" to "0". Saturday was our last regular game so the 2 to 1 victory was especially satisfying. It also showed the vast improvement in the Bowmanville team. Checker's Minors in the last 19 games are now 12 wins, 4 losses and 3 ties. The Peterborough club were all over the Toros for the first period but only had a 1 to 0 lead thanks to the splendid goalkeeping of Jamie Doyle. Rich Bateman tied the game on a power play marker with assists to Mark Bradley and John Whitaker, then Steve Deblois scored the winner, assists to Rich Bateman and Tracy Lemke. The defence of Chad Vanderende, Kevin Bullock and especially Jeff White were rock solid. Congratulations on a well deserved hard fought win.
