In both games the Checkers boys set a quick pace forcing the opposition at all times. On Monday, February 4, the team played against Oshawa Lake Vista in the Newcastle Arena. The squad controlled the game and dominated the Oshawa crew. Centremen Cory Chambers and Richard MacCheyne picked up two goals apiece in the contest. Cory had help from linemates Paul Conway and Scott Selleck as each registered an assist, Blueliner Larry Morrison assisted on both of Richard's markers. Defence- man Dustin Couch notched one from a slapshot from the point set up by Jeremy Snowden. Winger Kent Van- derheyden scored the final goal in the 6 - 2 rout. On Saturday, February 9, the squad entertained Oshawa Thornton - Dundee at the Bowmanville Arena. The first period went scoreless but the majority of the play was confined confined to the Oshawa end of the rink. In the second period the Checkers crew routed the opposition with four scores. Richard MacCheyne scored once and also set up both his wingers Scott Latin and Kent Vanderheyden for two more scores. Winger Sean Snow closed the period with a score on an excellent set up by linemate Jeremy Snowden. The third period opened with a goal from winger Scott Selleck and this score was expertly set up by centre Cory Chambers. The final result was 5 - 2 for the homeside. Most of the goals are coming as a result of team play and this looks well for the squad. Linemates are looking for plays and this increases their offensive potential. At the other end of the rink the play of the goaltenders and defencemen has been steady. The blueliners have been clearing their zone with authority and are supporting the forwards on the attack. Eagles Edge Mo Jacks 6-5 By Sam Laskaris The Bowmanville Cowan Pontiac Eagles have grabbed a 1 - 0 lead in their best-of- seven Central Ontario Junior 'C' Hockey League semi-finals by virtue of a 6 - 5 victory over the Port Perry Mojacks in the Bowmanville Arena on Sunday night, Darcy Huber opened the scoring for the Eagles at the 2:34 mark of the first period as he picked up on Chris Dreossi's rebound and deposited it behind Clay Lovering in the Mojacks* net. This goal which came on the powerplay was also assisted by Andy Terry. The Mojacks, however, tied the game with a powerplay marker of their own at 9:54 as Rob Sedore scored from Mike Ryan and Jeff Johnstone. The Eagles restored their lead at 14:13 as Glenn German scored a shorthanded goal. As the Mojacks were passing the puck around in the Eagles' zone the puck came back to a Mojacks' player who fanned on a shot, German capitalized on this opportunity by racing the length of the ice and placing placing the puck in the Mojacks' net. Port Perry was able to tie the game once again before the period concluded as Brian Nicholson (the league lender in scoring during the regular season) scored from Johnstone Johnstone and Rob Nicholson at 111:411. At the 1:40 mark of the middle stanza the Eagles went abend 3 - 2 as Scott Heard scored his first of the evening from John Young, Heard then scored Ills second of the game with Young and Terry earning the assists at the 11:20 mark. The Port Perry squad however, was able to cut the Eagles' lead to only one goal heading Into the final twenty minutes of play with a short- handed goal at 17:50, Paul liutlerworth set up captain -•apt Scott Wallace who scored on a breakaway. This set the stage for a very entertaining third period. As was expected, in the final period both teams provided some enjoyable hockey to watch. It was the Eagles who scored first as Young beat netminder Lovering, with line- mates Scott Heard and Brian Heard earning the assists only fifty-six seconds into the period. Just over a minuté later, Brian Nicholson displayed a good burst of speed as he dashed into the Eagles' zone and beat netminder Scott Hooper with a shot between his legs. Rob Nicholson and Johnstone were awarded assists on the play. The Mojacks tied the game at 5 - 5 at the 11:14 mark. The goal resulted when Eagle netminder netminder Hooper attempted to clear the puck out. of his own zone and inadvertently placed the puck on the stick of the Mojacks' Buttcrworth. With Hooper out of position, Butter- worth simply had to beat Tim Preston, who was the lone Eagle in any position to attempt and stop Butter- worths shot. With this goal it appeared that momentum was with the Mojacks' squad. This idea was quickly put to rest us only thirty-four seconds , later Huber scored the game- winner for the Eagles, his second of the evening, with the assists going out to Drcossi and Randy Ellis. The Mojacks hud several good scoring opportunities but were tumble to attain the equalizing goal which would have sent the game Into overtime, overtime, Excluding the all-star game which the Eagles lost 2 - l, the team Is now unbeaten in its past twenty-two games. In their quarter-final series the Mojacks needed to go the limit of seven games before eliminating last year's league finalists, the Little Britain members Jean and Bill Belfour, and Marg and Gord Regts are shown above receiving their awards from organizer Roger Wood. On Friday, February 1, the Heritage House Pee Wee Toros travelled north to Port Perry to play their final playoff playoff contest having already been mathematically eliminated eliminated from further play. Although they played hard for the full 60 minutes, the local lads were no match for the large, fast skating Port Perry Club, which may be the strongest team that the Toros have faced all season. The shots on goal were 59 to 14, and the final score of 8 - 0 for the home side was certainly predictable. Only the brilliant stand-up net-minding of Jason Hiscock kept the score from climbing into double figures as he blanked the red-hot Port Perry shooters through the second half of the game. Three Stars for Bowmanville were No. 1 Jason Hiscock, No. 2 Greg White, and No. 3 Kevin Farrow. On Saturday, February 9 the team once again headed north to play in the Annual Little Britain Pee Wee Tournament. Unfortunately, the boys are still showing the effects of four lop-sided playoff losses and were never really in the first game, losing4-0 to Pickering. In the second contest the Bowmanville boys showed some improvement as they were able to score three goals against Whitby and were in the game until a rush of third period penalties, particularly in the final three minutes thwarted any chance of victory. Final score Whitby 6 - Bowmanville 3. Scorers for Bowmanville were Todd Banks with two and Brooke Clemens. Hopefully, this Toro team can return to playing the kind of "team" hockey they are capable of for the balance of the season, which includes two more tournaments and a series of exhibition games. NON-CONTACT H0CKEV Twin Brand Orchards put an end to Toby's Pub's series of conquests of trying to finish in third position ahead of Cour- tice in the Oliver Division, as they defeated them 7 to 2. Toby's loss puts them in fourth place and pits them against Clinic Pharmacy in the first round of the Playoffs. The second place finish by Twin Brand forces them to play off against their division antagonists, antagonists, Courtice Auto Wreckers, in a best two of three series. Twin Brand took the lead in the first period and remained ahead as their mystery player P. Plumbtree counted for four points. This excellent game had only six minor penalties assessed with Twin Brand taking four of them. Shots on goal were a little one-sided as Twin Brand outshot Toby's 36 to 15. Game two of the evening had Clinic Pharmacy, who have been floundering lately, playing against Courtice Auto Wreckers. The 3 to 3 tie between these two teams gives Courtice sole possession of third place, matching them against Twin Brand Orchards (Beasties) in the Playoffs. Two goals by Clinic's N. "B" Crosbie paved the way for Clinic as they had to fight hard to force a tie with Courtice. Courtice. R. Jay, playing his usual aggressive game, began Courtice's scoring which was rounded off by singles from J. Partner and P. Henderson. Clinic's final goal came from P. Murdock, who was juggled from one line to another, as a result of an injury to a line- mate during the game. Courtice outshot Clinic by a wide margin of 32 to 18. The big game of the schedule was played at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday between Shopper's Drug Mart and San Marino's, with the winner remaining in the Burke Division. The 5 to 4 victory for San Marino's allowed them to expand their lead over Shopper's in the standings by three points, and to remain part of the Burke Division. E. Strand was the man for the "Chargers", as he scored two of their five goals. Singles from B. Benham, B. Hazelton and G. Krummenacher rounded off San Marino's scoring. T. Klawitter scored two and assisted the other two in Shopper's Drug Mart's effort. San Marino's not only had the edge in goals but also in penal ties and shots which were recorded as 4 to 2 and 23 to 16 respectively. The final game of the schedule schedule was staged between the Flying Dutchman and Barrett Electric. When the final buzzer was sounded the tie score of 3 to 3 resulted in no changes in the standings. The Dutchman remain in first place with 27 points and Barrett's place second with 22 points. The Dutchman's J. Smith chalked up three points which gives him a year's total of 39, and the lead in scoring. Barrett's markers came from J. Lemke, K. Rowe and G, Adams, the shots on goal were recorded at Dutchman 19 and Barrett's 17. Only one minor penalty was assessed throughout the game. House League Hockey Results On February 8, the Mr. Sub team hosted St. Gertrude's of Oshawa. St. Gertrude's showed showed why they are rated as one of the best teams in Oshawa by skating away with an easy 10 to 0 score. This game was a good example of what our boys will face in the first round of the Times Tournament. Tournament. On February 9, the Mr. Sub boys got back on the right road by getting a win over Hutton Transport by a 7 to 3 score. The first goal for Mr. Sub was scored by Richard MacCheyne while the Sub's were a man short, the goal was assisted by Richard Whiten and David Haldinby. The other goals scored by the Subs were Chris Poirier three, Richard MacCheyne two, Bobby Powers one with assists going to David Rice one, Travis Campbell one, Richard MacCheyne one, Robert Van Wess one, Richard Whiten one. The play of the game was the goal scored by Chris Poirier. Chris raced the Hutton player the length of the ice and after three tries got the puck behind Jason Black in the Hutton net. The Sub boys have to keep playing hard because no team in the Pee Wee division can be taken lightly. Hooked on Video Ties Peterboro Toros 3--Petes 3 Last Sunday, February 3rd, the Pee Wee Toros went to Peterborough and came away with a tie. It was an entertaining game with both goal keepers playing well. The coaching staff changed the forward lines around to try and put the team on a winning track and it almost worked as the Toros put together a three goal lead. The first period was scoreless, but not without good chances for each team. Michael Colbourne, who was playing wing, opened the scoring with an assist from Jeremy Laird. Jeff Rohr, assisted by his new linemate, Ryan Putnam and defenceman Andrew Day, scored the second goal and then Matthew Doughty scored on a penalty shot, making a fine feint to his right while shooting the puck between the goal keeper's legs. At the end of the second period, Peterborough scored their first goal. Two more goals in the third period rounded out the scoring, Ronnie Luxton had to play very well in this game, breaking up some three on ones and preventing some good scoring chances on more than one occasion, Save On MoorTone Paints !
