Gladys P. opened the meeting with a poem, "The Joy of Living". Secretary Blanche Jones read the mini report of 1984 she had prepared for the January meeting and also gave the Roll Call - 14 members present. Letters were read from the Y.W.C.A. and one received from Mrs. Elsie Roy, Tyrone inviting Club 21 to "World Day of Prayer", March 1 at Tyrone Church. Treasurer Bev Cochrane gave her report of 1984 and we discussed our supper caterings. We decided to give a plant to our shut-in Sr. Citizens - five in number. This was moved by Ruby Trewin and seconded by Gerlinda Haunstein. Our Card Committee - Val Lloyd, is to send a thank you card to Mrs. Vivian Dunn of North Carolina for the quilt blocks she donated to Club 21 and a get well card to Mr. E. Whelpton who is in a nursing home in Florida. Mrs. Jean Slemon read a thank you card from Pastor Joe Lafave and family. Mrs. V. Lloyd stated she and Mrs. J. Mayer had both received a letter from the Bicentennial Bicentennial Commission of Ottawa. Mrs. Kay Buttery moved we give $15.00 to the Heart Fund, It was agreed to by all. Blanche Jones offered to sew up the quilt blocks and backing and she, Val Lloyd and Eileen Blackburn arc responsible for framing and marking the quilt for sewing, Our "Renter" Jean Garrard stated the Centre was rented for March 23. So we had belter get busy. Mrs. Jean Ashton had brought a quilt her mother had that was put together in blocks of crazy quilt design and tied rattier than quilted. It was really showy. Group 4 ladies served lunch. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Millson were Sunday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Topple, Bowmanville. Mrs. Ray Cameron and children of Pontypoo] called on her mother on Monday and we learn that it was Ixjrnn's birthday. So congratulations Ixirna. Oh yes and just west around the corner, there was another birthday - so congratulations and happy birthday to Jack Potts. Miss Brenda Pierson, Baileboro spent the weekend with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Roy Paterson. Other weekend guests with the Paterson's were Miss Kim Hiltz of Peterborough and Miss Madelina Mata of Oshawa. Mrs. Jean Slemon and Mrs. Blanche Jones attended the Tyrone U.C.W. Wednesday evening. Mrs. Betty Pascoe and Mrs. Pat Drysdale had cnarge oi the Devotional period, the latter part, the Beavers all in uniform under the leadership of Mrs. Marilyn Vaneyk and Mrs. Jackie Forbes and helper Miss Gail Wilson and.one girl guide in uniform. The girls showed us the ritual of their meetings as Marilyn instructed. It was enlightening to see such little ladies getting such good training. Then Pat gave us the insight into the money-raising of the Girl Guides and promoted a little on the Cookie Drive. Then Mrs. Jane Woodley, President, and Mrs. Elsie Roy, Secretary, conducted the business, some of which was the World Day of Prayer which will be hosted by the Tyrone Ladies U.C.W. at the church on March 1st. Then lunch was set and we had a nice chat. Mr. Bruce Brettell with Mr. David Brettell of Oshawa visited visited Wednesday afternoon in Toronto with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hartley Brettell. Craft class met on a very cold and windy Wednesday morning at the home of Mrs. Isabelle Trim. Mrs. Dorothy Trim stayed on to spend the afternoon with Isabelle and Bert joined them for supper and the evening. Mr. John Currelly, Canton visited Wednesday afternoon with Mr. Bert Trim. On Wednesday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Morley Robinson visited in Port Hope with Mrs. W. R. Prouse and Charlie. Mr. and Mrs. John Murphy were supper guests on Thursday Thursday of Mr. and Mrs. Morley Robinson and Gordon. On Thursday, Mrs. Dawn Brettell spent the day with Mr. and Mrs. Hartley Brettell, Toronto. On Sunday afternoon, a goodly number from Starkville Starkville were among the huge crowd who attended the reception reception in honor of Mr. Frank Stapleton of Newtonville and held at the Newtonville United Church Sunday school. Frank recently became World Champion Auctioneer at a competition in London, The party was a fitting tribute to a much respected man. The Jones' moved last month into the former A1 Clarke house on the Newtonville-Kcndal road. On Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Ted Stark and Mr. Frank Bylsma, both of Knoxville visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stark. The craft class met for their weekly session on Wednesday morning at the home of Mrs. Pal Windalt. Mrs. Edna Dobson and Miss Tanya Fonk visited Wednesday Wednesday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Llew Hallowell. Mr. Ted Stark, Knoxville was a dinner guest on Thursday Thursday of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stark. On Friday, Mrs. Bruce Brettell spent the day in Toronto visiting Mr. and Mrs, Hartley Brettell. DALE A lifelong resident of Bowmanville who played an active role in many aspects of community affairs, Melville S. Dale died February 7th in Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Born and educated in Bowmanville, for forty years he operated the successful Mason and Dale retail hardware hardware business in town. Following Following the sale of his business in the early 1960's, he typically kept active by qualifying for a real estate licence and selling properties in this area for a number of years. He retired twelve years ago. Melville is survived by his wife, the former Gladys W. Bateman, whom he married on September 3, 1930, two daughters, Janet (Mrs. Gordon Findlay) of Etobicoke, Norma (Mrs. Glenn Richards) of Oshawa and grandchildren Susan, Sheilagh, Douglas and Michael Findlay, Dale and his wife Carol, Dan and, Anne Richards. As an active and enthusiastic enthusiastic participant in the community, community, Mel Dale was elected Deputy Reeve of the town, was a member of the County Council, and served a term as chairman of the board of directors for Memorial Hospital during the yéar in which the first wing of the then new hospital was built. Early in his business career, in 1929, Mel Dale joined the Bowmanville Rotary Club and became one of its staunchest supporters with 54 unbroken years of service. This achievement was recognized August 5, 1983, during an official visit by the Rotary District Governor, at which time Mel was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship award. The award is named after the founder of Rotary International and means that funds to provide scholarships are donated by the Bowmanville Bowmanville Club in Mr. Dale's name. Mr. Dale served as the Club's President in 1947-48 and one of his unique contributions is a Rotary Club song he composed. composed. This song forms a part of the official Rotary song- book. Music was an important part of Mel Dale's life and he had a fine tenor voice. He shared this talent with the congregation of Trinity United Church as a soloist and member of the choir for many years, and he also served as a member of the church's Board of Stewards. The service on Saturday, February 9th from the Morris Funeral Chapel was conducted conducted by the Rev. John Peters of Trinity United Church who spoke warmly of Mel Dale's lifelong devotion to the town he had been so actively involved involved in. Interment at Bowmanville Bowmanville Cemetery followed. Pallbearers were his sons-in- law, Mr. Gordon Findlay and Mr. Glenn Richards, and his four grandsons, Dale and Dan Richards, Douglas and Michael Findlay.
