February 20.1985 11 Deadline Set For Video Approval and Classification The deadline for approval and classification of all existing existing videos on the shelves of Ontario's video retailers has been set for February 1,1986, according to Film Review Board Chairman Mary Brown. Legislation amending the Ontario Theatres Act was passed last December to provide provide for the approval and classification classification of videos sold or rented to the public. The community community standards used by the board in its dealings with both films and videos were written into the Act's regulations in February, 1985, but no specific date was set when existing shelf stock would be required to bear an official classification classification sticker. "We have cleared through all of the industry's submissions submissions to date, approximately 2.000 titles," said Brown. "We have included those titles and their approved classifications in an interim catalogue and mailed it to all of the 2,768 licensed video retailers across the province." "If video distributors submit submit the remaining titles over the next few months, we should be able to produce a complete catalogue of titles and their classifications by autumn," Brown said. She estimates there are more than 8.000 major studio film titles available on video cassettes in Ontario. The director said she had set February 1,1986 as the date by which all video retailers' existing existing shelf stock is to be classified, classified, to allow sufficient time for them to clear on-shelf product product through the branch. In the interim, Brown said she is encouraging video retailers to apply classification stickers to video cassette display boxes now for those titles which correspond with the July catalogue catalogue listing. She said that she has encouraged encouraged video distributors to submit titles for clearing at the branch as soon as possible to alleviate any undue burden on retailers attempting to sticker their shelf stock before the deadline. Retailers may continue to stock all current titles until the deadline, whether or not they appear in the catalogue. After February 1, all titles on retailers' shelves not cleared through the branch or those listed in the fall catalogue as 'not approved' must be removed from circulation. "In the fall, retailers will be provided with application forms for classification stickers to be applied to the video cassettes," Brown said. "Retailers will be asked to indicate the number of stickers stickers they require for each classification category to affix to cassettes in their stores." The Film Review Board uses four classifications: Family (F), Parental Guidance Guidance (PG), Adult Accompaniment Accompaniment (AA), and Restricted (R). After the deadline, all new cassette releases arriving at the retail level will be required required to have the classification classification sticker already affixed to the cassette by its Ontario distributor. The director said that representatives representatives of the branch have personally visited more than 1.000 retailers across the province. province. In a recent letter to retailers, Brown assured them that inspectors from the branch would continue to visit their stores to offer assistance with any questions they might have.
