Pay the first instalment of taxes! On Monday evening, Feb. 18 at the Newcastle Community Hall, guest speakers at the Newcastle Village and District Historical Society were Mrs. W. B. Chappie and Mrs. A. K. Sculthorpe of the Local Architectural Conservation Conservation Advisory Committee from Port Hope. Mrs. Sculthorpe Sculthorpe showed pictures of Port Hope's flood and the old fire hall which had been designated designated a heritage building prior to the flood but was demolished anyway. Slides of the fire in the hardware store on the main street were shown and LACAC did assist the owner in restoring the store front to its original architecture. Many other Port Hope buildings with interesting architecture were shown and Mrs. Sculthorpe's commentary was delightful. The LACAC is a volunteer group who raise their money through House Tours, bus tours, etc. After the coffee break, business was conducted conducted by Lynn Lovekin, President President and the reprints of the Professor Squair's books were presented to the speakers. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ormiston, Bowmanville. Last Monday Mrs. May Burley entertained the ladies of the Euchre Club. On Friday, Mrs. Wilda Johnson, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. A. Cole and sister Doreen Crosby, of Agin- court, motored to Ingersoll to attend the funeral of her cousin, Mr. Glen Cole. Thursday afternoon visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wade were Mrs. Jean Cochrane and Mrs. Myrtle Morris of Bowmanville. On Friday Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wade visited Mr. and Mrs. Dick Haskill and Sidney, Port Hope. This was special occasion, celebrating Sidney's 86th birthday. On Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Lome Johnson visited their son Gary, in Toronto. Mrs. S. Y. M. Woo recently enjoyed a holiday in California with her daughter Lily and son-in-law Mark Sausedo and children. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gordon, Port Hope, were Thursday visitors with Mrs, Kathleen Kimball. Mrs. Pauline Storks attended two Ganaraska meetings last Thursday, Finance and Personnel in the afternoon, Full Authority in the evening. Newcastle Senior Citizens met last Thursday at the Community Hall. There was a good attendance with the following winners of the card games: 1st Marg Todd, 2nd Robin Alldred, 3rd Myrtle Alldred, 4th Velma Jakeman, 5th Olive Little, Low Lady Louise Jose. Mary Baker, who played for the opposite sex, won the Low Gentleman's prize. Newcastle Girls Win 1st Playoff Game The Newcastle Brownsdale Jr. Girls played their first game of the playoff series on Feb. 21st against Otonabee III and came away with a 6 - 1 win. Shari McColl opened the scoring for Newcastle early in the first period, assisted by Vicki Rogers and Tara Sinclair. Traci Mercer increased increased that lead to two with less than five minutes remaining remaining in the period with assists going to Vickie McGarvey and Jeanette Collinson. With 53 seconds remaining in the first period, Chris Collins scored Otonabee's lone goal. The second period could have been a carbon copy of the first with the exception that Otonabee did not score. Newcastle Newcastle put home an early goal scored by Traci Mercer, assisted by Vickie McGarvey and Suzanne Brooks. With just over five minutes remaining in the period, Tara Sinclair's persistence in front of the net paid off. The assists went to Lynn Theriault and Vicki Rogers. The third period saw ten minutes of end to end action with Newcastle putting home two more goals in the final five minutes of play. Tanya Brady scored from Vicki Rogers and Vickie McGarvey at the 5:11 mark and Tanya scored- the final goal with 2:43 remaining after being set up by Traci Mercer and Annissa Aus. Among the chartered accountants accountants was Joanne Skelding, daughter of Joan and George Skelding, Niagara Falls and granddaughter of Elizabeth. Over four thousand attended. In the evening, Judy, Michelle, Trudy, Elizabeth, George and Joan enjoyed dinner at Honest Ed's. We extend congratulations to Joanne. Birthday greetings to Joan Kimball, Howard Quinney, Del Rudman, Frances Rickard, Alfred Garrod, Albert Naylor and Grace Ton. Congratulations to Bill and Marilyn Couch who celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary anniversary on March 1st.
