6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 27, YELVERTON (Intended for last week) This week's variety of weather has done nothing to enhance our love for winter. Tuesday's freezing rain with intermittent snow flurries provided a back drop of ice covered branches on the deciduous trees which creaked and cracked in the wind and shed their bits and pieces in sad disarray all over the ground. The coniferous trees were the picture of dejection and depression with their crowns bending over to the ground like weary workmen following a hard day's work. (Ed's note: Harvey, that's almost poetic.) Mr. Howard Malcolm attended the C.F.A. annual meeting in Hull, Quebec, this week. The election of officers provided a few surprises as the current President Glenn Flaten was unceremoniously dumped out of office after four years in that office. Likewise, Mrs. Bridget Pike, 1st Vice President of O.F.A. was elected as 1st Vice President of the C.F.A. Howard and Eileen likewise attended two county pork producer annual dinner meetings this week at Keene (Peterborough County) and at Alliston. Mrs. Audrie Brown accompanied them to the Keene meeting. On Saturday evening it was Corrie and your scribe's pleasure to attend an Appreciation Night at Manver's Arena Auditorium in honor of the retirement of Clerk Treasurer of Manver's Twsp. Ross Davidson and his good wife, Audrey, following 30 years of dedicated service to our municipality. Around 50 guests of the Township of Manvers sat down to a sumptuous roast beef dinner provided by the ladies of the arena auxiliary. Reeve George Neals chaired the evening with Councillor Terry Staples saying Grace for the occasion. Councillor Barry Pickering thanked the ladies for providing a fine dinner. Ross Davidson introduced his family who were present for the auspicious occasion - Audrey and Ross' two daughters, Pat and Linda and their husbands and their five children from Elmira and Picton respectively. Two gentlemen from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing located at Oshawa were present for the occasion - Messrs. Harry Connelly and Peter Jackson. Mr. Connelly, on behalf of Municipal Affairs and Housing, presented Ross with a very impressive wall plaque in recognition of his years of service to the area. Letters of regret were received from other invited guests including our Federal M.P. Allan Lawrence at his inability to attend. Reeve Neals proceeded to make a presentation at this time of a fine portrait from Hunt's Studio in Pontypool of Ross which will be hung in the Township office commemorating Ross' years of service. Later in the evening at the dance, George presented a similar large portrait for Ross and Audrey's own use. These were very professionally done photos and were very impressive. The • next presentation of a portrait by Deputy Reeve Robert Brown was also impressive but in a different vein. This was a caricature of Ross by Brooks of Buckham which depicted Ross in a slightly less flattering light. Mrs. Mae Neals presented Mrs. Audrey Davidson with a lovely floral centrepiece in recognition of the auspicious occasion and for the supportive role she had played over the years. Mrs. Bonnie MacFadyen, Deputy Clerk Treasurer, then presented Ross with an ornate pen and pencil desk set with a digital clock from Manver's Council, the Deputy Clerk and the Road Superintendent, Mr. Maurice Bradley. Our Manver's Twp. Clerk has the distinction (dubious some might suggest) of having been in office when three Wardens were chosen from Manver's Twp. to serve in their respective County Councils. Mr. Allan Beer (who is reported to be the youngest Warden ever to be elected in the United Counties of North- Durham) was elected in 1955. A familiar face at least to us, Harvey Malcolm was elected in 1971 for N & D and the current Reeve Mr. George H. Neals was the first Warden from Manver's Twp. to serve in that capacity since entering Victoria County in 1974. Past Warden Allan Beer spoke very fluently and expressed the feelings of many who had worked with Ross over the years, of the dedicated service Ross had provided the municipality and ratepayers over his 30 years as clerk and wished him and Audrey the best in their retirement years. Next in line was your Yelverton scribe, who, in his usual mumbly-bumbly style, reiterated pretty well what had been stated by his predecessor. (A "Long-Beer" is a pretty hard act to follow! ) After poking a little fun at Ross, he presented him with a copy of the book - "When I Relax, I Feel Guilty!" Ross then took the podium and gave a very interesting review of the Hi-Lites of Manver's municipal activities since 1955 when he was appointed Clerk-Treasurer. The extensive improvements over the years on the quality of the road improvements and the amount of road equipment currently operational in the township. Mr. Maurice Bradley, our current Road Superintendent, was appointed in 1960 following years of service by Mr. Alban Sisson. Both of these gentlemen were present on the occasion - Maurice, sporting a broken ankle not yet in a plaster cast, and Mr. Sisson still a very sharp, young nonagenarian. Ross spoke of our 1967 Centennial project, the "Rolling Hills" which was edited by Mrs. Violet Carr and revised and updated this year with a number of copies still available. This is a comprehensive up-to-date history of our township. We were pleased to have had a small part in the initial version (1967) when it was our pleasure to be the Centennial Chairman. Ross and Audrey each expressed their gratitude to the members of Council and staff who had arranged the evening and for the fine gifts. Later in the evening M.P.P. John Eakins presented both Ross and Audrey with pins - a province of Ontario pin to Ross and an Ontario Trillium pin to Audrey and praised Ross for the service he had provided to the township and commented on the fact that few ratepayers realized the work that Ross had done for its residents over and above the call of duty. The balance of the evening, which was open to the public at large, was spent in socializing and dancing to music by Mr. Wes McMahon D.J. and the live band (former Jack Galloway Band members) comprised of Bob Sisson, Carlos Tamblyn, Don Hamm and Davey Masters whose music was well received. Ross and Audrey's many friends extend their sincere appreciation for the dedicated service provided by the Davidson's over the years and their best wishes to them for a long and enjoyable retirement. Sorry to see two local residents of the township who would normally have attended, absent, due to the illness and wish them both a speedy convalescence. --Mrs. Jeanne McMahon recuperating from an operation on her foot. --Mrs. Eleanor Kerr just released from Intensive Care in Peterborough Hospital. We understand that Ross and Audrey will soon be taking advantage of their new found liberty by spending a few weeks in Florida. We commend Manver's Council and staff employees for arranging the appreciation night for Ross and Audrey. Among those attending the event from a distance were the Davidsons' two daughters and their families, Mr. and Mrs. Leon McQuaid, Kevin and Michelle of Elmira and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mills and daughters Mary Jane, Julie and Kattie of Picton. Brenda and Terry Malcolm, Lorraine and Trevor Nesbitt were scheduled to return home from a week's holidays on Marguarita Island on Saturday evening. Bet they felt like taking the next plane back when they hit our most recent blizzard on that date.
