The team defeated the Port Perry MoJacks in their best-of-seven semi-final series 4-1. Game four in the series was played last Wednesday in Port Perry. Facing elimination, the MoJacks put forth a solid game and emerged with a 6-3 victory. On Friday night, however, elimination became a reality for the MoJacks as the Eagles posted a 9-6 victory in the Bowmanville Arena. In Port Perry on Wednesday, the Eagles opened the scoring at the 3:18 mark of the first period. Chris Dreossi took the initial shot and then had his rebound picked up by linemate Jeff Dawson who beat Clay Lovering in the MoJacks' net. This turned out to be the only lead that the Eagles would possess throughout the entire game. At the 15:58 mark, Paul Butterworth scored unassisted for the MoJacks to even the score after twenty minutes of play. In the second period, Port Perry went ahead 2-1 when Jeff Johnstone won a face-off in the Eagles' zone and Brian Nicholson slapped a shot from the point behind Scott Hooper in the Eagles' net. The next MoJack goal was identical to the previous one. While the MoJacks were shorthanded, Johnstone won a face-off and Brian Nicholson released another rocket which beat Hooper at 13:03. The period's final goal was scored less than two minutes later as Bob Horton set up Wayne Snodden who connected on a MoJack powerplay at 14:55. This gave the MoJacks a three-goal lead heading into the final period and left everyone wondering whàt to ! expect in the concluding twenty minutes of the game. The Eagles dominated the play in the third period but could not finish off their plays. The result of this was that both teams exchanged a pair of goals in the period to make the final score 6-3. For the MoJacks it was Brad Flaxman scoring from Paul Butterworth and Rob Nicholson scoring from Johnstone. Both Eagle goals were scored by Tim Preston. The first one was assisted by Mark Hickey at the 13:13 mark. Preston's second goal came while the Eagles were on a 2-man powerplay situation with Randy Ellis picking up the lone assist at the 17:44 mark. The Eagles outshot the twelve seconds later Brian MoJacks 43-34 in the game but Nicholson beat the Eagles' it was the Port Perry squad starting netminder Hooper which was able to capitalize w ith Johnstone picking up the on its good scoring lone assist, opportunities. Terry and St. Amand teamed up to set Brian Heard up with a pass down the left hand side of the rink. Heard with a good burst of speed crossed the MoJacks' blueline and beat netminder Harman with his shot. In the third period, Port Perry tied the game at 6-6 as Johnstone scored from Snodden at 3:25. What turned out to be the game-winning goal came off the stick of the Eagles' forward Rowe at 10:46. Hickey and Darcy Huber picked up the assists on the play. Immediately following this goal the Eagles' Huber went after the MoJacks' McColl. Huber was assessed seven minutes in penalties and also ejected from the game while McColl received only a minor penalty for roughing. This could easily have been the turning point of the game as the MoJacks could have enjoyed a full five-minute powerplay. A MoJacks' player however took a minor penalty a little while later and the MoJacks simply could not get on track throughout the rest of their powerplay. As the teams were playing with three skaters apiece, Terry gave the Eagles some breathing room as he scored unassisted at the 12:13 mark on an excellent individual rush. The final goal of the game was scored into an empty net by the Eagles' Young following numerous opportunities by the Eagle players to score in the unattended net. Rowe picked up the only assist on this goal scored at 19:28. In the other semi-final series the Port Hope Panthers have deadlocked their series at 3-3 following a 14-10 overtime victory over the Lakefield Chiefs Sunday night. The seventh and deciding game in the series was played last night in Port Hope. The winner of this game will move on to face the Eagles in the championship round with a game assured for Sunday in Bowmanville at 7:30p.m. Hooked on Video Finishes Playoffs With a Victory Transporters Enjoy Series Darlington Toro parents knew their sons were up for the game. After all they had suffered all the weird "hyper" behavioural traits that adolescents demonstrate before such matches. The series was on the line. They had home ice advantage with a greatly enlarged Toro crowd. Midland had travelled a long-distance in fog and rain and were bound to be off their game. Victory parties had been prepared. Could they pull it off? First ■ -With bells clanging and fans cheering, Toros stormed onto the ice ready to do battle. Within a minute and a half they had powerplay advantage and the crowd prepared to celebrate the goal. It didn't come. Instead a few minutes later Toros were down 1-0 when they failed to clear the puck. Again the Toros went on the powerplay and again their attack was foiled. What was keeping the puck out anyway? The line of Healey-Armstrong-Smith led one assault after another to no avail. Greg Goode's ' blasts from the blue line bounced off pads and posts. Needless to say the atmosphere was intense. Second Less than two minutes into the second Midland scored again making the crowd even more nervous as their team seemed to be fading from their first period effort and were now down 2-0. Finally at 8:12 Stephen Smith moving out of his end directed a rink-wide pass to Greg Healey who spotted Nicky Dennis in full flight and with precision timing placed the puck on Nicky's stick as he sailed past the défense and pulled the goalie. (The ti$e hid turned. End-to-end battle returned with Toros one time pounding pucks at Midland only to return to their end to protect their goalie from the same. Mike Ruthard continued his sensational performance keeping his team in contention. Third Thirty seconds into the third Greg Goode captured the puck in his own end and in a superb individual effort stormed up the ice and drove one past the goalie to tie the game. This play set the tone for the third period as Toros time after time manhandled Midland to lay siege on their goalie who miraculously kept the puck out. This nerve-wracking offensive period ended in a tie sending the series into overtime. Two exhausted teams left the ice that night with nothing settled as Toro parents prepared for an unexpected trip to Midland for a sixth game knowing that no one deserved to lose this series but hoping Toros would be victorious. Midland It was not to be. Despite a hundred percent effort from all team members, Transporters were unable to find the scoring key against this Midland squad whose second-period goal stood to take the series. Considering the record: Game 1 Toros 3-2; Game 2 Midland 3-2; Game 3 Midland 4-3; Game 4 Toros 3- l ; Game 5 2-2; Game 6 Midland 1-0 these were well matched teams and fans of both clubs should be proud. Congratulations to Buckham Transporters for the best playoff hockey seen for a long time! transpire for the rest of the game. In the second period the Eagles exploded for four goals in the first ten minutes, just as the MoJacks had done in the preceding period. First, it was Ellis scoring from Dreossi at 2j45 following a hectic goalmouth scramble. Then Andy Terry blasted a shot from the point which beat netminder Lovering. This goal scored at the 8:30 mark was •assisted by Dayrell Rowe and John Young and pulled the Eagles to within one goal of the MoJacks. Only sixteen seconds later the game was tied at 4-4 as Ellis scored his second of the evening from Glenn German. At this point it was time for Bob Marquis, the MoJack's coach to make a netminding change by inserting Ken Harman into the game. Less than a minute later at 9:45, the Eagles grabbed the lead for the first time as Young scored from Pierre St. Amand and Brian Heard.
