Viewpoint ....by Rosella Carew Sometimes the spirit just simply sits me down and makes me write. So it was, after reading a short article by an eighty-five year old. In fact, I found the article in a 1978 Woman's Day while waiting my turn at the clinic. I told my husband of it, wondering if I might go back and ask for the magazine. Edgar's reply? "Don't be so silly". So, here I am putting in my words the gist of this lady's article titled titled "If I Had My Life to Live Over". She talks of spending too much time being afraid of life, afraid to speak, afraid of what the neighbors might think, afraid to take a chance and afraid to let her children take a chance. She never had walked in the rain, dressed as she wished, nor stepped outside that ultra conservative role she had set for herself. She talks of being fearful of trying to make that "statement" "statement" she felt was bottled up inside, with the result that she had never danced on a lovely day, nor laughed freely, nor left her dishes undone to have fun. I believe she finally made her statement by writing the article. In total it didn't exceed two hundred words. But what a warning for the rest of us! Life is a composite of age and time: a time to laugh, a time to cry and a time to lie in the meadow and dream. SMALL BUSINESS Opportunity? -- Problem? How can we laugh when we are old if we haven't carried carried it from our youth? How can we glory in a beautiful day, the song of the bird and the call of the loon if we haven't taken time to listen and to cultivate the habit? Ten years from now that son will remember that his parents parents were at the arena to cheer him on - never mind that the dishes' weren't done. Many a philosopher has told us that humour is the leaven of life. But during those busy years, humour gets lost. The baby is crying and the two year old has climbed into the cupboard again. The dryer is broken, the dishwasher is spouting water when it shouldn't and the five year old has lost his shoes. The door bell is ringing, ringing, the twelve year old is swooning over the boy next door and threatens to leave home if she can't go to the movies with him, then hubby phones to say the boss is coming to dinner. So who has time for humour? Spit on the philosophers. NOTICE JJ Blue Cross "pay direct non-group coverage available to all Ontario residents until June 15, 1985. ONTARIO (,(i/l,(N) Well, we had better find time for humour. We'd better better break out of that shell and buy that silly little hat we admired last week. We'd better meet our man at the door with a zany joke and if we know what's good for us we had better try to grab that brass ring at least once in our life. If we don't, what will we have carried from youth to old age? The meeting meeting of life on its own terms in our youth becomes the leaven for our twilight years.
