I \ Summer Employees Begin Work at Local Museum Taking the museum out into the community is just one of many the projects this year's team of summer employees are undertaking this season. The girls working behind the scenes at the historic house this year will be (left' to right) Susan Housley, Laura Suchan, Nicole Holz. by Catherine Denny Bringing the past back to life is a challenge that Bow- manville Museum's summer summer students are prepared to meet. Now in their third week on the job, the archivist and public relations workers employed with the museum are already finding new ways to revitalize the historic historic house and make it more active within the community. community. "The museum's an important important part of our town and people should be made aware of what it has to offer," explained archivist Sue Housley. "We're trying to take the museum out to the public, while at the same time bringing the public public back to the museum." Sue, a third year student at Western University, is in charge of organizing museum files and basically setting up a master plan which will give visitors better better access to available material. material. The two girls handling the public relations end of things are second year university university students Laura Suchan and Nicole Holz. "Events will include everything everything from Care Bear birthday birthday parties for youngsters to Senior Citizen card parties. parties. We have something for everyone." Before embarking on their summer project, the three students conducted a public opinion survey within the community to gain a better understanding of how the museum can better better serve the town people. The results of the poll revealed revealed that the general public public took Bowmanville Museum for granted, and many of the local residents hadn't even been in to visit. In light of the survey results, results, the girls agreed that their efforts should focus on developing new and exciting exciting events at the museum, designed to suit all age groups. "Most people don't realize how alive the museum really is," explained Nicole. "Our job is to persuade these people to take advantage of the great activities being held here this summer, and to take a look at this year's new exhibits," she added. A few of the attractions coming up soon at the Silver Street house are the Senior Citizen card party being held May 30th, and the 75th Anniversary Goodyear Exhibit opening June 2nd which is expected to be the highlight of the season. Don't leave this job until it is too late! Beef Cow Herd Liquidation The North American cattle cattle herd has undergone a pronounced liquidation during the last few years, especially during 1984. The number of beef cows in the U.S., Canada and Ontario are all down to 5 to 6 per cent from a year ago. A USD A report indicates that cattle on feed are up 4 per cent and the number of heifers heifers on feed are up 10 per cent. It does not appear that this trend will be reversed reversed until we see a more positive profit margin. Canada Almost Brucellosis Free With the recent Agriculture Agriculture Canada designation of northern Ontario and Quebec as Brucellosis Free Regions, southern Ontario is the only area in Canada which is not declared Brucellosis Free. Southern Ontario is presently designated designated as 'low incidence'. It is Agriculture Canada's goal to eradicate brucellosis brucellosis in Canada by 1987. Blood testing of cattle will continue and if no brucellosis brucellosis is detected, this goal may be met ahead of schedule. At one time, brucellosis was a common disease causing significant economic loss in beef and dairy cattle. by John E. Finlay The Ontario Plowmen's Association Association - A Continuing Link -- "Everything is on track for this year's plowing match," says Bill Parney, President of the Ontario Plowmen's Association. "We've been involved in putting together plowing matches for almost 72 years and they just keep getting better. This year's match near St. Thomas is no exception. exception. The Elgin county local committee, under the chairmanship of Ken Mon- teith, has really done their work." The Ontario Plowmen's Association, which was formed in 1911, is committed committed to the encouragement of good tillage practices throughout the province. There are 51 local branches of the association and every: branch has the opportunity ' to bid for the site of the International International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show. This year the International Plowing Match will be held in Elgin County, near St. Thomas. The first plowing match sponsored by the Ontario Plowmen's Association was a provincial match held in 1913 on a farm near Toronto, Toronto, now the site of the Sunnybrook Hospital. Right from the beginning the plowing matches were a popular event. Farm implement implement manufacturers displayed displayed their merchandise at these events and by 1926 a new name had been decided decided upon: from then on the event was known as the "International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Demonstration." Every year since then, with a brief exception during during World War Two, the big match has been travelling from county to county throughout Ontario. A study on the objectives and future directions of the International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show was released in February February 1985. This study was undertaken because of the increasing costs faced by local committees putting on the Plowing Match and by the need for better communication communication within the management management structure. Chaired by Ken Lantz, former Deputy Minister with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the committee came up with 38 recommendations. The International Plowing Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show is one of the top agricultural showcases showcases in North America. In its report the committee strongly supported the showcase aspect of the Match. Another of the committee's committee's recommendations was that the educational element element of the Match continue to be emphasized. There was particular reference to the conservation tillage demonstrations, demonstrations, an event that was well-attended in 1984 in Wellington County. The 1985 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show will be held on the William Bradish farms, near St. Thomas, Elgin County, from September 17th to the 21st, 1985.
