Morals, Manners and God The preamble of the Canadian Canadian Constitution, adopted by the parliament of Canada in December, 1981, states; "Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law: 1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it, subject only to such reasonable reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified justified in a free and democratic society." The phrase, "The supremacy supremacy of God", was added to pacify the Christian community community which had lobbied vigorously vigorously to keep Canada a "Christian" nation and to establish establish God as our head of state. Most Christians breathed breathed a sigh of relief when the Prime Minister, Mr. Pierre Trudeau, agreed to the new wording. However, this concept concept has raised serious philosophical philosophical and legal questions. Is God truly supreme in Canada Canada under the charter? If so, whose God is supreme? Is he the God of Christianity? Or could he be the God of the Jews, the Muslims, the Hindus, Hindus, or the Buddhists? Could he be the God of the Unitarians, Unitarians, the Secular Humanists, or even the God of the Marx- ists-Leninists? The charter itself itself will answer that question quite clearly. The Phrase, "The rule of law", is. equally puzzling. By Rev. W. Whitman "The Significance of the Charter of Rights" What law does the charter refer to? Mr. John Crosbie, Canada's Minister of Justice, in reference to a recent decision decision by the supreme court of Canada, stated, "No law in Canada is safe under the charter." charter." Who will decide what laws will remain intact and what laws will be ruled unconstitutional? unconstitutional? Will Parliament have that mandate? The role of Parliament has been drastically drastically diminished as lawmaker. lawmaker. The supreme court has been established as the chief law-making body in Canada. Canada. An existing law is safe only if the supreme court rules that it is constitutional; neither neither Parliament nor God is supreme. In the words of Mr. Crosbie, "We have a new Canada." Canada." Representative government government has been, to a large degree, undermined. The courts will decide how Canada will be governed. The process, based on legal challenges before before the courts, will take at least ten years. On April 17, 1985, equality rights under section 15 of the charter came into effect after a three-year period in order to grant the provinces time to bring their human rights codes into line. Almost all of the provinces have failed to act but have preferred to have the courts determine who will have equal rights in Canada. Section 15 (1) states, "Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit' of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability." if it is now unconstitutional to discriminate on the basis of religion, it is clear that, from a legal point of view, no one religion has priority over another. Therefore Canada is . no longer officially "Christian" "Christian" or "Judeo-Christian". All religions and all faith communities communities are equal in Canada, along with those communities that claim no religious faith (E.G. The Athiests and the Marxists-Leninists). Considering the serious nature nature of these statements and questions, it can be truly said that the charter of rights has become an instrument of deception. deception. Most Christians have been deceived. Rather than having established that the God of the Christian faith is to be oiir head, he has been reduced, underlaw, to a place of equality with all other Gods. The roles played by biblically- based philosophy, ethics, and community standards of conduct conduct have been diminished to that of simply another religion. religion. The role of representative government, upon which our Christian nation has depended for appeal toward the establishment establishment of National Righteousness, Righteousness, has been altered.
