Blackstock resident Winnie BSdlow (right) gives her sister Rhona DaSilva an affectionate hug. by Diane Pickett It was more than 60 years ago when three-year-old Winnie was left with an Aunt and Uncle in Trinidad, as her mother and five-year-old sister Rhona sailed back to their home on St. Vincent without her. Winnie and Rhona's mother was going blind, so she kept the older daughter with her to help when her sight was completely gone. Meanwhile, Winnie made her home in Trinidad and raised three children of her own. Likewise, she often intended intended to get in touch with the sister she had never really really known, but time passed without any communication, communication, Her only daughter Judith moved to Canada 18 years ago and Winnie followed followed a year later. A couple of years ago, through a Toronto cousin, Winnie discovered that Rhona had daughters who live in New York and when it was found that Rhona would be coming to see her daughters and grandchildren grandchildren this fall, the long awaited reunion was planned. planned. Neither sister ever imagined imagined that they would see one another again so far away from home. But on September 8th, 1985, Judith and her husband Gunther Mertineit drove Winnie from, their home south of Blackstock to Queens, New York, for a reunion with her sister after a separation of 61 years. Rhona is staying at the Mertineit's for about a month before returning to the U.S., and she hopes to return for Christmas. Even that might not be long enough for the two sisters to catch up on 60 years of family news and gossip! Through Rhona's related experiences, Winnie has grown to know their mother, and is now determined to visit her,birthplace on St. Vincent and her mother's grave. Happily, Judith Mertineit has already begun to organize organize a reunion of the whole family on St. Vincent in two years time. And it will certainly take that long to set up: Rhona alone has 12 children, 51 grandchildren grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren! great-grandchildren! But Rhona and Winnie, much as they look forward to seeing the whole family together, have seen their lifetime dream fulfilled. Fred Swann officiating at the ceremony.' The maid of honour was Diane Wilson of Peterborough, Peterborough, and the best man - Gary Harris of Toronto. A tape of the Wedding March was used used for the music. All the family were able to attend attend with the exception of daughter Brenda who lives in Western Canada. Approximately 30 guests were present for the event. A delicious buffet supper was enjoyed after the ceremony. The bride and groom are both truck drivers - working for the same Toronto Company.
