"It's time for a change," said Mr. McCrory, "I feel the people who have put their names up are people who have held the job or are presently presently holding the job." In addition to Les McCrory, incumbent incumbent Marie Hubbard and Maurice Prout, a former Regional Councillor, have announced their candidacy. Mr. McCrory would like to see pride and a greater sense of community community developed in Bowmanville and one way to do that, he says, is to provide better recreational facilities facilities and parks. As a popular coach of both baseball and hockey teams, Mr. McCrory is very familiar with the facilities available in the Town. "Memorial Park isn't a park," he said, "it's two baseball diamonds...and diamonds...and the only time people use the Bowmanville Creek area is on the first day of the trout season." "We need a nice area where people can sit, Bowmanville doesn't have anything downtown," he said. He pointed out that industries often send people into towns to assess assess the community before considering considering locating there: "If you create a place where people want to bring up their children, well that's the way to attract industry too," he added. Mr. McCrory feels that the news of increased development in the Town of Newcastle is somewhat misleading: "the housing development development is in the Courtice area, people are building there because it's close to Oshawa. It has no impact here." As for the Hydro project at Darlington, Darlington, Mr.McCrory thinks the town is making a mistake "putting all its eggs in one basket". "Darlington (Generating Station) isn't industry, it's a political ball- game...people said they'd never close Wesleyville, but when the political pressure is on, anything can happen," he said. "We're relying relying on Darlington to carry us... we need other substantial industry." Although he has no political experience, experience, Les McCrory is no stranger to elections or to working with committees to get things done. A graduate of the industrial engineering engineering program at Ryerson Polytechnic, Mr. McCrory was on the academic council at Ryerson when the institute was granted degree degree status. Also, he was on the Board of Governors when the library library was built. Les and his wife, Jeanette, and their two young sons have lived in Bowmanville for six years. They have been active in the community, particularly in the local hockey and baseball leagues. Mr. McCrory was one of a group of concerned parents who took responsibility for the Bowmanville house league hockey organization in August, 1984. First United Way Donation A group of employees from Ontario Ontario Hydro's Darlington Nuclear Generating Station were not only among the newest United Way donors. They were also among the first contributors to reach their 1985 campaign objective. Armen Arkelian, campaign chairman chairman for 1985, announced Monday that the Darlington employees from the operations staff had raised $10,000. Their contribution will help United Way reach its fund raising goal of $1,915,000 this year. Thanks to the work of the Hydro employees and many other early donors, the Oshawa/Whitby/New- castle United Way is off to an excellent excellent start, with approximately $120,000 raised to date. Steve Schillaci, United Way captain captain for the Ontario Hydro operations operations staff, explained that most of the pledges were collected through payroll deductions. A goal of $9,500 had been set. Mr. Schillaci said the operations staff include a total of approximately approximately 300 persons. The early achievements of United Way's latest fund-raising drive were discussed Monday, September September 30, during a kick-off luncheon luncheon held for several hundred volunteers volunteers at the General Sikorski Hall in Oshawa. Armen Arkelian, the campaign chairman, noted that this year's fund-raising drive is scheduled to end in exactly six weeks. During that time, he hopes fund-raisers can exceed the $2 million objective for the first time in the United Way's 45-year history. The theme for this year's effort is "We Are United". And Mr. Arkelian added: "We have to be united if we are going to raise the amount of money needed by our 40 agencies this year." Oshawa monument Co. Heather Smith's sermon on Sunday was basically about the idea of God being our judge, and being thankful for it. God is just, fair and merciful. This frees us from the fear of being wrongly criticized by others, and enables us to see the good in other people and leave the judgement of their sins to God. We are only responsible for putting ourselves right with God before it is too late for his mercy. During the service, the Sunday School Staff was also installed, with introductions being made by the Sunday School Superintendent, Gloria Dunford. To your correspondent, correspondent, it was a very helpful morning. Many were sadly surprised to learn of the sudden passing of Ross Bradley, former Manvers Station resident. He died Wednesday evening, September 25th with funeral service from Mackey Funeral Home in Lindsay at 2:00 p.m. ; on Saturday, September 28th. , Burial was in Fallis Cemetery, Cemetery, and our sympathy is extended to the bereaved family and friends. Harold and Eileen Moore left Wednesday morning to attend the funeral of an uncle in Indiana. Condolences to these people too. At the Bingo on September 25th, the jackpot was given away. The lady who won it comes from Millbrook, and she told Vicki Campbell that in twenty-five years of playing, this is the first time she has won a jackpot. Happy shopping shopping with this windfall! For this election time, here is a good thing to remember: "Wisdom is knowing when to speak your mind and when to mind your speech." HAMILTONS INSURANCE SERVICE Main St., Orono SERVING YOUR INSURANCE NEEDS FOR 35 YEARS Susan Sawyer JudyWoodbeck 705-277-3117 983-5519 Nelda Dawson 623-4835 "We attach very special importance importance to United Way in the Durham Region," said Donald Evans, Durham Region's chief administrative administrative officer. Since United Way agencies help fill Durham's social needs, the regional regional municipality is acutely aware of the Workload borne by the agencies. agencies. "We know what it would cost if their services had to be provided by government," said Mr. Evans. Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard promised his town's support in the United Way effort. "We're going to do our part to see that it goes over the top," he said. Keynote speaker, Nancy Hand- leigh, executive director of the Distress Distress Centre of the Durham Region, discussed the United Way campaign campaign from the unique perspective of a United Way agency. "All we are asking for is your time, your talent, and your dollars to make your community a better one," she said. She spoke warmly of the "neighbourliness" "neighbourliness" which exists in Oshawa and area, noting that many problems problems can be resolved by neighbours neighbours over the back fence or around the table. "As cities grow, backyard psychiatry and good, old-fashioned neighbourliness declines," said Mrs. Handleigh But she added that agencies which rely heavily on volunteers are a major bargain. Citing her own organization as an example, she noted that 1,200 calls were received at the Distress Centre of Durham last year. "Lives were saved for about $4 per call," she said. She pointed outthatvolunteer activity activity benefits the volunteers as well as the groups and individuals they assist. "You Can grow, have fun, and feel good as you give," she said. ojA GUee&e!
