A Prou&i leader far oMo(j ws... OBITUARY ALLAN A. MARTIN Allan A. Martin died at the Oshawa General Hospital Hospital on Saturday, September 21,1985. Mr. Martin was a former public school inspector. He was born in Clarke Township, Durham County, Oct. 18, 1896, and was the first child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Martin. Mr. Martin began his career in education in 1916 when he taught at S.S. #10 Clarke Township (Starkville). It was in that community that he • met Lucie McKay. They were married in 1922. Mr. Martin's teaching career took him to Newton- ville; S.S. #2, Clarke (Lake Shore) and in 1926 to De- wson Street Public School, Toronto. There he completed completed a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Pedagogy degree and received received a public school inspector's inspector's certificate.. In 1929, Mr. Martin was appointed by the county council as public school inspector inspector in East Northumberland Northumberland County, where he had jurisdiction over 90, mostly one-roomed, schools. He was instrumental instrumental in introducing music in the schools, organizing the Northumberland Music Festival, and promoting public speaking in the schools, encouraging school beautification programs programs and arranging school trips. In 1951, Mr. Martin was transferred to South Peel Inspectorate where he continued continued his work. In 1959 the South Peel Board of Education Education gave his name to a new school "the Allan A. Martin Senior School." . He retired at age 70. Mr. Martin was committed committed to his family and church. He was also Worshipful Worshipful Master of Cowan- ville Loyal Orange Lodge #265; founder of the Lions Club in Brighton, a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Brighton and Port Credit and a member of the Sydenham Kiwanis Club in Oshawa. His wife Lucie McKay, died in 1968, and his second wife, Violet Main, died in 1982. Mr. Martin is survived • by four children and their spouses, Arthur and Georgina Georgina Martin of Brighton, Alice and Bob Sheffield of Oshawa, Campbell and Mary Anne Martin of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., Louise and Allan Snider of Parry Sound; two step-daughters, and their spouses, Barbara and Don Shier of Downsview, Mildred and Bruce Lowe of Bolton; a sister Mrs. Gertie Stapleton; a brother, Gordon Gordon and Theresa Martin, both of Bowmanville, 14 grandchildren and seven grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Rex Dolan at Simcoe Street United Church on Sept. 24, followed by interment in Bowmanville Cemetery. -- Gordon C. Martin Letter to The Editor I wish to thank my dear friend, Gladys Finrtey, for helping me to safety when we were crossing Harmony Road (in the cross walk) last Thursday night, A speeding car came along as we were about half way over and without her help I would not likely have made it to safety. I hope the person driving that car realizes what he nearly did and is more careful in the future. Edna Lucyk OBITUARY OLIVE MAY ROGERS Born in Preston, England, and educated in England, Olive May Rogers, aged 85, passed away at Marnwood Nursing Home, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, October 17th, 1985, fol- lowinga three year illness. Daughter of John and Annie Walmsley, she was married January 6, 1926, to Robert Charles Rogers. She was predeceased by her first husband Richard Herbert Herbert Goode who passed away in 1923. Her interests centred around her family and home, and she was a great worker for her church, St. John's Anglican. She was a member of the Martha's Group. Surviving are her only sister sister Mrs. Ann Clark, Port Hope, her family, Walter Goode, Dorothy McLean, Robert, Ron, Ralph, Barbara Barbara Wilson, Muriel Smith, Betty Lou Locke, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Sunday, at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, Bowmanville, with the Reverend Byron Yates officiating. Mrs. Arlene Ayre presided at the chapel organ. Many donations were received received in her memory from the Canadian Cancer Society. Society. Cremation. Interment Bowmanville Cemetery. Fantastic Audience Response to "Which Witch is Which?" The Bowmanville Drama Workshop entertained hundreds of youngsters and their parents last week-end, presenting four performances of the children's musical "Which Witch is Which?" at the Bowmanville High School on October 26th and 27th. The play was ably directed by Vic Goad, and as you can see the make-up was "terribly" effective. effective.
