The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 30,1985 17 Obituaries Although the world's largest crawler crane has already been used on construction of the Darlington Generating Station, last Friday it did the job for which it was designed. Days of preparation by skilled workers culminated in the lift of the first of 16 steam generators from the ground to the top of the unit 2 reactor building. That's a load of 365 tonnes (or the weight of 58 elephants) lifted 56 metres up and 48 metres in to the special room where it is installed. The steam generator uses heat from the reactor to produce steam to push the turbine generators which make electricity. In fact, if the steam generator were a tea kettle it would hold enough water for 448,000 cups. Unit 2 at Darlington will be in-service in May 1988 and unit one in 1989, unit three in 1991 and unit four in 1992.
