The Baha'i Community of Bowmanville travelled to Toronto to be with other Baha'i groups of Ontario, to take part in an official treeplanting treeplanting presentation of a Red Oak tree to the people of Ontario. The tree which is planted just north of Queen's Park, is a gift of gratitude from the Baha'is of Ontario for the help given to the Iranian Baha'i refugees who now make their homes in this province. Mr. David Peterson, Premier of Ontario, formally accepted the gift of the tree on behalf of the people of Ontario, at a special outdoor ceremony on Oct. 30, 1985, United Nations Day. The Toros thank them for their financial financial support and the boys hope to put a few wins in the record book as a token of their appreciation. The team is made up of both major age and minor age boys. The players are: in goal Geoff Smith and Jason Czypyha.Jason is new to the team, in the past he played in Newcastle. At present the defence consists consists of Jeff Flintoff, Jeff Acheson, and Andrew Day who all played lastyear and Paul Woodlock who is returning returning to this team after a couple of years away. The forwards who played last year are Jeff Rohr, Matthew Doughty, Marc Peirce, Chris Brown, Jeremy Laird, Ryan Putnam and Gilbert Holder. The following following forwards are new to the team: Dana Barrett, a real hustler, and Todd Banks who had an excellent year with the Toros two teams last year. The coach is Fred Brown who is acting manager and the assistant coach is Grant Flintoff. The boys played four exhibition games before their first league game, winning winning three and losing one. TOROS 4, COBOURG 1 The whole team played very aggressive hockey to pick up this win, a rare win against a team which over the years have dominated Bowmanville. Cobourg opened the scoring in the first period when they managed managed to skate behind the defence defence and beat Geoff who from this point on, robbed Cobourg of many opportunities. opportunities. It was the second period before the Toros scored when Dana moved the puck off the boards to Todd. He shotand the goalkeeper did not completely smother the puck. Todd alertly took another shot and scored. Jeff Rohr scored the second goal, a short handed unassisted unassisted effort, on a solo rush from inside the Toros' blue line. The third period saw the Toros become really tough. Paul Woodlock made a fine defensive effort to block a shot and Jason made some good saves. Gilbert Holder scored a nice goal when Ryan and Jeff Rohr combined combined to set him up. Seconds Seconds later, Jeff Rohr scored, assisted by Gilbert. House League Division is sponsored by the I.O.O.F. service club. The team participated participated in its first game on Saturday, Oct. 26 against their counterparts from Ajax. The defenders consist of goaltenders Christian Forsey and Roger Leblanc with the six blueliners Steve Kay, Dustin Couch, Chris Raby, Tom White, Ron Luxton and Ken Cornish. The nine forwards are Jeff ri Clarke, Kevin Farrow, Billy r> MacIntyre, Jeremy Snowden, Sean Snow, Chris Poirier, Kent Vanderheyden, Duane Adams and Richard MacCheyne. There were 30 boys interested interested in playing for this team and the coaching staff would like to take this opportunity to thank all the boys for their efforts during the try-outs. There will be occasions throughout the season when additional players will be required and those boys not making the team will be invited to play. ! The first game resulted in a 3 - 3 draw. Ajax struck quickly with two goals but before the first period was over the homeside had rallied to even the match. Billy MacIntyre was put in the clear on a good pass from Richard MacCheyne and he cashed in on a shot bouncing off the goalpost. A minute later Billy grabbed an errant puck in the corner and relayed it to Chris Poirier in the slot. His shot was screened and found the mark to tie the game. Ajax went ahead in the second period but the I.O.O.F. squad got it back in the third. Richard MacCheyne and Jeremy Snowden executed a give and go pass combination that sent Jeremy in alone.
