The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 6,1985 7 MacDonald Leads Buster's In a Dramatic Comeback v--£-yy. I mtei By Hebert E.SUIei The Newcastle Buster's Oldtimers travelled to Hampton for their second game of the day on Sunday, November 3,1965 for a 7 p.m. encounter against Audio Vision. Buster's overcame a three-goal deficit twice for an 8 - 7 victory. The first period saw Audio Vision jump to a 3 - 0 lead. Jack Snedden put Audio Vision ahead 1 - 0 on an unassisted effort at 7:30. Phil Solomon scored the next two goals with the first of these at 8:10 assisted by Brian Bradley and the second at 14:50, assisted by Jack Snedden for a 3 - 0 lead. Buster's got one back at 15:43 by Dave Roote, with assist going to Tony Jones. Audio Vision got this one back when Huck Balson scored at 17:26, assisted by M. Hewer for a 4 -1 lead after one period. The second period saw Buster's outscore Audio Visions -1. Buster's narrowed the margin to 4 - 2 when Sandy MacDonald connected for his first of three goals at 4:10 assisted by Ron Hooper and Dave Roote. MacDonald scored his second at 8:15 to narrow Audio Vision's lead to 4 - 3 assisted by Jim Hutchison and Tony Jones. Dave Roote scored his second goal of the game at 10:06 to tie the score at 4 - 4, assisted by MacDonald. Brian Bradley gave Audio Vision a 5 - 4 lead at 16:40, assisted by Phil Solomon to end the second period. The third period saw Audio Vision increase their lead to 7 - 4 on two unassisted goals by Jack Snedden with the first of these at 6:10 and the second at 9:15. Buster's started the long trek back 50 seconds later when Ron Hooper scored at 10:05, assisted by Gary Wood- beck and Bob Stiles to narrow Audio Vision's lead to 7 - 5. Tony Jones narrowed it to 7 - 6 with his first goal of the game at 12:10, assisted by MacDonald and Gary Woodbeck. Tony Jones scored his second of the game to even the score at 7 - 7 at the 18 . minute mark, assisted by MacDonald and Dave Roote. MacDonald completed his hat trick at 22:40 to give Buster's an 8 - 7 lead, assisted by Dave Roote and Tony Jones. Audio Vision pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra attacker with the face-off deep in Newcastle zone, only to have Tony Jones and Dave Roote have a two on one with no goaltender and Tony hit the webbing on the outside. With seven seconds left on the clock with the face-off to the right of Leo Kelly, Audio Vision won the draw and took their shot with Kelly recovering the puck in the mad scramble to leave only one second on the clock and Buster's with a hard fought 8 - 7 victory. Jim Hutchison, Mike Doyle and Dave Roote served minor penalties for Buster's while Don McMurter, G. Moore and Huck Balson served minors for Audio Vision. Buster's will be sponsoring a 12-team tournament starting at 6 p.m., Friday, November 8 and continuing on Saturday, November 9 starting at 8 a.m. with a dance at the Newcastle Community Centre at 9 p.m. Monday Night Bowling Top Ten Averages Oct. 28 Donna Harness 244, Nancy Living 229, Jackie Braybrook 221, Shiela Roberts 213, Fern Bradley 212, Sharlene Dehart 208, Jean Harness 202, Pat Hetherington 194, Mary Pat Hall 193, Heather Westlake 191. In addition to the team award, Scott Webster was selected the tournament's outstanding outstanding goaltender as he stopped thirty shots in the final game. John Romano opened the scoring from Shmyr and Balson at 5:26 of the opening period, With just seven minutes gone in the second, Simcoe tied it. Scott Page capitalized on a goal mouth scramble near the end of the second to give the Toros a one goal lead going into the dressing dressing room. Simcoe tied it up part way through the third and notched what appeared to be the winner with 1:18 left. With less than one minute remaining and both teams a man short the Toros charged.. Four St. Marys boys swarmed around the Simcoe net and Bobby McArthur popped it home to tie it up. Following the competition of the third period, a five minute sudden death over-time was played with posts being hit several times, but no goals. Three shooters previously select then took penalty shots from centre for each team. David Fairey was first for the locals and he was stopped • but Simcoe scored. Kelly Balson converted a smooth deke while Scott Webster shut down Simcoe. That set the stage for the final shots where you needed split-vision to catch all the action. Once again Webster closed the door and a fraction of a second later Chris Shmyr pumped a wrist shot into the top right- hand corner. It certainly was a sweet victory over en outstanding team. Our boys were full credit for the win as they all played an outstanding game. The Toros goaltending duo of Webster and Smith made the difference in the final two games. Our Midget Toros advanced to the final by route of wins over Flamboro and Georgetown. Georgetown. The St. Marys Cement boys left no doubt about the Flamboro game by scoring three times in the first period and once early in the second to take a 4 - 0 lead. Flamboro caught our defence and beat Scott Webster on a breakaway breakaway to get on the score board. Chris Shmyr, Kelly Balson and Larry Perris rounded out the scoring for the Toros and the opposition added one more to make the final 7 - 2. The first four goals were scored by George Pithie with two, Dave Tuepah and Kelly Balson who had a total of two. Passes for goals came off the sticks of Jamie Lever, Chris Shmyr, Glen Campbell, Kelly Balson, Jamie Downing, Dave Tuepah and Larry Perris (two). The Toros' second game was a greater test. Georgetown Georgetown were a good skating team with a good goaltender. Jamie Lever notched the all- important first goal at 8:33 of the first period on an excellent give and go with Shawn Rekker while we were short- handed. The score remained 1 - 0 until the 8:00 minute mark, of the third period when Chris Shmyr stole the puck in front of the Georgetown goal and shot it home. Less than one minute later, Glen Campbell scored from David Fairey. David notched a goal of his own with three minutes left from John Romano and Jamie Lever. The scoring was rounded out on an unassisted goal by Mike Gallant. David Smith played superbly to earn the shut-out. Scott Webster also played well in the first game. League play this week saw the Toros in Cobourg on Tuesday night for a rugged game against their eastern rivals. Cobourg took a quick two goal lead but goals by Campbell (two), Romano, Pithie gave the St. Marys Cement crew a two goal edge. After Cobourg got one back Paul Stainton put us up by two, again to close out the second period. Two defensive lapses in the last part of the third enabled the boys in green to earn a tie. Cobourg does have an advantage in size so our boys are going to have to skate and hustle. The 5-5 tie was contributed to by assists from George Pithie, Kelly Balson, Chris Shmyr, David Fairey (two), Jamie Downing, and Glen Campbell. As often. happens after a strong game we came up a little flat for an exhibition game against Oshawa Red Wings on Wednesday at Darlington. In spite of getting 31 shots on their net we only managed one goal off the stick of Glen Campbell. However as was obvious from our results in East Gwillimbury, we got things back on track on the weekend. Pyramid Points Due to the age of our boys we often lose some regulars to employment circles, and as a result of this we appreciated Jamie Lever's excellent help last weekend. .We are pleased to have Jamie, Kelly Armstrong Armstrong and Mark Hickey on our roster even though they play regularly with the Eagles. This week we travel to Oshawa's Children's Arena, Monday at 8:00 and are at home to Uxbridge on Wednesday at Darlington. Next Saturday we participate participate in a tourney at Port Hope. If you can see your way clear to support our St. Marys sponsored Midget Majors we would appreciate it. Peewees Playing Well Last year Stouffville scored over 20 goals in two games against Skinner's Insurance Pee Wees and undoubtedly felt they would win this game as I am sure many Bowmanville parents did. The result was a delightful surprise and the game was most entertaining. The fact that body contact is allowed this year cramped Stouffville's style as the Toros checked and checked and kept the opposition off stride. Good goal tending by Jason Czypyha and Geoff Smith anchored a fine defensive effort which was helped by good back checking from the forwards. Scoring Summary First Period: Toros 1. Todd Banks from Paul Woodlock and Dana Barratt; Stouffville 1. equalized. Second Period: Toros 2. Marc Peirce from Paul, Toros 3. Paul: both sides a man short; Stouffville 2. from a good passing play, Stouffville 3.; Toros 4. Jeremy Laird from Marc and Andrew Day. Third Period: Toros 5. Dana from Paul: short-handed, Toros 6. Matthew Doughty from Jeremy and Andrew; Stouffville 4. ; Toros 7. Jeremy from Marc: an empty net goal. Toros 7, Peterborough 1 The | Toros lost to Peterborough earlier this season aitc^plajpqjfciwitb great intensify to avèrige the defeat. Peterborough was kept off balance so that they could not develop their strong passing game, although they had a BOWMANVILLE NON-CONTACT LEAGUE HOCKEY good many shots on Geoff Smith before the Toros had their first shot. The Toros scored seven goals and almost had a shutout, shutout, it was only in the last two minutes that Peterborough got their goal. Jeff Rohr scored the first goal with assistance from Todd. Jeff then got another this time unassisted and short- handed. Marc and Jeremy combine for the next and Paul got the fourth unassisted. Dana got a very nice goal with help from Jeff Rohr and Todd. Jeff and Paul combined for yet another goal. The last goal was especially nice to see as 'Ryan Putnam scored helped by Matthew and Chris Brown. 17118 line works very hard and deserved the goal. Jeff Flintoff and Jeff . Acheson played a very effective game on defence to round out a team effort as did Jason who played in goal for the last half of the game. W., OSHAWA 728-4601 IOOF Peewees Take It on Chin On Sunday, November 3, the I.O.O.F. Pee Wee Selects travelled to Pickering to play the Major Select team from that centre. They met a hard hitting and disciplined team that appeared to be in mid season form. The I.O.O.F. squad are still making the adjustment to contact hockey and this game was quite an education for them. The Bowmanville forwards found very little time to operate with the puck before feeling the opponent's body. The blue-line crew were under constant pressure. Passing and play execution suffered as a result and Pickering took an easy 6 - 1 victory. The I.O.O.F. crew gave up two goals quickly but responded responded with one before the first period expired. Richard MacCheyne put winger Billy MacIntyre into the clear and he beat the netminder with an accurate shot. The Pickering team went on to score four more unanswered markers in the second and third periods. They also limited our boys to very few opportunities in their end. However, as the game progressed, the Bowmanville crew tightened their play. Sean Snow, Ronnie Luxton, Tom White and Jeff Clarke all responded well to the heavy going and they exhibited they could also play a tough game. Goaltender Christian Forsey also performed better as the game progressed making several excellent saves. When contact is introduced into the game, the players must re-learn the game in this context. To a player, their reaction was encouraging and they display an eagerness to compete in this new game. The final game of the week for Checkers Variety Atom Ii Checkers Variety Atom II provided the team work mentioned in previous articles, as we. scored nine times and added 18 assists in a 9 - 3 win at the Civic in Oshawa over the L.N.H.L. Red Wings. This is where the "Oshawa Generals" play and our players were excited. Mark Bradley's Ghetto Blaster provided initial background music to get us started on the right track. Mark's recent move to defense from forward, has steadied our defense corps and his slapshot from the point will add another asset to our team. Two goal outbursts by Steve DeBlois, Colin Taggart, Matt Dykstra and singles to Chris McCarthy, Craig Forsey and Brandon Osmond, counted counted all the scoring. Chris also chipped in with four assists, Matt with three, David Szabo three, Matt Aitken two, Craig two, and singles to Steve, Colin, John Whittaker and Jeff White. Our toughest game of the week was in our home rink at Darlington on Saturday. A previous loss to Pickering (8 - 4) was avenged by a 4 - 2 triumph by our side. The solid goaltending of Brandon Osmond who played his finest game of the season, and power play goals by Matt Dykstra and Chris McCarthy set the tone of this game. Matt added another goal, with a single to Craig Forsey. Assists were earned by Mark Bradley two, Dan Kooy one, Colin Taggart one and John Whittaker Whittaker one. Pickering had not lost to Bowmanville for two years and their players were heard to say "we're still in first place." Alas they can hear our footsteps. On Monday night in Markham, we were on the end of a losing score (5 - 2) as we had just lost our captain to the Atom I team. (Good luck Richard). We were short another player, our team faced tough opposition from Markham. Markham took a 2 - 1 lead into the third period and we managed to tie, but Markham scored three unanswered unanswered goals to cement their win. Our players seemed to rise to the occasion, but mistakes mistakes got us this game as we outshot Markham by a 2 - 1 margin. As of tonight we have five wins and one tie in exhibition and three wins and two losses in regular season play. We have out-scored our opposition 57 to 34. We have also registered registered 67 assists and much thanks must be awarded to last year's coaching staff for their emphasis on team work. 1) • 5 Berries • 3 Beans • 2 Cherries • 2 Carrots • 2 Mixed Vegetables • 2 Corn • 2 Peas • Black • Peaches Currants • Rhubarb • Asparagus • Cauliflower • Broccoli • Apricots • Turnip • Squash • Brussle Sprouts iSmillan ORCHARDS Huy.
