The Region is constructing the new well, pumphouse and feedermain to replace an existing well, located west of Mill Street and North of Millson Hill Drive.- The existing well has been taken out of service due to high sodium and chloride levels in the well. The project involves three components, i.e. the well, a pumphouse and a watermain to connect the new well to the existing watermains in Orono. The new well and pumphouse will be located on the north side of Fifth Concession Road just east of Wilmot Creek. This site is the best of five sites investigated during groundwater investigations carried out late in 1984 and in 1985. The watermain will be constructed along the north side of the Fifth Concession Road and on an easement through the ministry of Natural Resources property and across the Orono Creek and will connect to the existing watermain west of Sommerville Drive in Orono. The contract for the construction construction of the well has been awarded to G. Hart and Sons Well Drilling Limited, Fenelon Falls, at a tender price of $58,266.00. Construction Construction will start in December and should be completed in February, 1986. The work involves the development of two wells, one being a standby for the other. Each well is designed to produce up to 150 gallons per minute. The wells will be approximately 44 feet deep with an inner casing 10 inches in diameter and an outer casing 20 inches in diameter. A screen approximately 15 feet long will form part of the inner casing and will be installed in the water-bearing formation. Pumping tests, chemical tests and bacterial tests will be done to determine the quantity and quality of the water available from each well. Contractors are presently preparing tenders for the construction construction of the watermain. This work will be awarded in January, once successful development of the wells has occurred. Approximately 3,400 feet of 8" diameter watermain will be constructed by the end of May, 1986. The crossing of the Orono Creek, however, must be completed in February of 1986 to comply with Ministry of Natural Resources (Fish and Wildlife Division) requirements. The pumphouse portion of the project will be tendered early in 1986 and will be constructed in the spring of 1986. The new well should be in service by the end of May, 1986. It should provide adequate water supply to meet current demand in Orono. The existing well presently n use (located west of Sommerville Drive) will be used to supplement the output of the new well at peak demand periods, such as during fire fighting. Plèase advise if any additional information is required. Yours very truly, W.A. Twelvetrees, P.
