L1C 3K9 20-tfSN OBITUARIES Garnet Laverne Symons Family, friends and neighbours were saddened at the passing of Garnet Laverne Symons in his 84th year on Tuesday, April 15, 1986 in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Born in Bowmanville, April 21st, 1902, Garnet was the son of the late Frank and Emily (nee Hoy) Symons, brother to the late Stan, Gordon and Vilda. Prior to his first marriage, Garnet worked a short time for a local butcher and at Goodyear Canada in Bowmanville. Upon his marriage to the late Florence Gertrude Burke on March 17, 1922, Garnet joined her on the Burke family farm located on Lake Ontario near Bowmanville, a mixed farm which later became solely a holstein dairy operation. To this union were born three children, Helen, Frank and Dorothy. Both girls, however, passed away when they were quite young. For several years Garnet and his wife also ran the Symons' Lakeside Farm Summer Resort to which tourists came to enjoy a relaxed vacation, several returning year after year. In addition to these activities, Garnet drove his own small school bus for over 35 years, picking up children from the local rural area for delivery to Maple Grove and Courtice Public Schools. Prior to this, he drove children to the Bowmanville Public School by a horse drawn vehicle. Many of these children, grown now with families of their own, will remember the jolly, good-natured bus driver, who occasionally poked fun, but always protective and conscientious with regard to their safety. In his retirement, Garnet enjoyed travelling to distant locales outside of Canada. Following Flo's passing, Garnet married Helen Coulson Lovekin on July 29, 1972. They travelled to the Soviet Union for their honeymoon and upon their return took up residence in Colbome. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Helen, son Frank, grandchildren, Joan, Nancy, Marilyn and Peggy, and great grandchildren, Marty, Amy, Jennifer and Jesse, step-sons James and Richard, their children and grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Morris Funeral Chapel on Thursday, with the Reverend James Small officiating. The organist was Mrs. J. Albert Cole. Pallbearers were Messrs. Jim Allin, Sam Cureatz, Richard Lovekin, Russell Lovekin, Neil Metcalf and Leroy Short. Flower bearers were Alfred Allin, Clarence English, Stan Goble, Bert Mutton and Les Reid. The many floral arrangements and donations to the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital Expansion Fund, Palliative Care, Oshawa General Hospital, Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Arthritis Society, and Canadian Diabetes. Association were a silent tribute from friends, relatives and neighbours. Following the service, family and friends gathered at the (Lovekin) Kilcolman Farm where the St. George's A.C.W. of Newcastle provided a beautiful buffet lunch. mmm Oshawa Monument Co.
