The coaches are A1 Webb, George Cawker, Bob Marshall, Ted Robson, John Taylor and Dennis Tierney. FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- In an elimination elimination tournament held on May 12th, the boys floor hockey team from Enniskillen Public School were the winners. Team members are Gary Wright, Kevin Taylor, Jeff Strong, Darin McDonald, Michael Real, Colin Jonah, Michael Tidd, Dwayne Glaspell, Barry Ramsay, Scott Kossatz and Darryl Glaspell. Coach Mr. L. Rogers. FITNESS WEEK -- May 24 - June 1. National Physical Activity Week began on the 24th and the Town of Newcastle is entering into a participaction competition with the Town of Cobourg'to determine which has the more physical population. Sponsored by the Crown Life Corporation, in conjunction with the Cobourg Family Y, and the two towns, May 28 will mark the big day for the physical activity challenge. The mayors of each town have been asked by the Y to rally together the ranks of his or her community and challenge neighboring communities to a one day mass participation event. Residents of each town are asked to participate in 15 continuous minutes of physical activity. They will then call in their participation to the Y, the results will be tallied, and the winner will be proclaimed by virtue of the percentage of the towns' population involved. MOSPORT -- Half price tickets are being offered to all General Motors of Canada employees by Mosport Race Track for the Can-Am Race at the track, May 30 - June 1st. The Super Ticket value $35 is being offered for $19 and for every ticket sold, Mosport will make a donation to the United Way. Look for posters in G.M. Plants for more details. HORSESHOES -- Reserve Saturday, June 7th for the Annual "Dude" Hills Open Horseshoe Tournament at the Port Hope Legion. SOCCER -- It was a wet evening for the kids from Bowmanville and Newcastle in the Lions Soccer League, on Thursday, May 22, as they played an exciting game to kick off their 1986 Soccer Season. These kids ages 6, 7 and 8 years old (Tyke) showed the fans that soccer is great entertainment. The Lions won the game 3-0. Nicholas DeFreitas scored the first goal on a free-kick in the first half. Martin Routh then scored both goals in the second half after missing numerous chances earlier in the game. Matthew, Nicholas and Brian also had great opportunities. Steven Brinkman played a superb game in the mid-field leaving the defense with little work.,He also set up the third goal with a perfect pass. The main reason for the win was the result of good team work as all players played their position position well and worked hard. Chris Baumhauer, Ian Robinson, Brent Huggins and Nico Tensen played a steady game. Playing for the Lions this season are: forwards: Chris Baumhauer, Nico Tensen, Nicholas DeFreitas, Martin Routh, Kevin Chalmers and Michael Penney. Junior Orioles Open Home Season with Loss Sunday Afternoon LAWN BOWLING -- The Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club opened for season on May 25th. Team members are: front row, 1-r, Glen .German, John Clief, Scott McLeod, Steve Coverly, Troy Foster, Phil Bird, Chris Michelson; back row, On Wednesday, May 21st, the Cowan Pontiac L & L Tool Orioles travelled to Ajax for their first league game and suffered a 6-5 set back. The team played well for their first game and could have won just as well as lost. Chris Michelson and John Stephenson collected the only two hits the Orioles had. Michelson went the distance striking out 9 and walking 3. Sunday, May 25th, the Orioles hosted this same Ajax team and lost by a 14-3 score. Despite the absence of 3 starting players teamwork paid off as the visitors were handed a 11-10 loss. Contracting Minor Mosquito All-Star Soccer Soccer Club played their first official game of the season against the Uxbridge Soccer Club. The final score of the game at Darlington Sports field was 9-0 in Bowmanville's favour. The first half of the play saw 4 goals for the red and white. At the 5 minute mark, Andrew Lainge put the ball across the line on a pass from Chris Yeo. One minute later, Neil Gerrits scored from Sean Brown. At 8 minutes into play Andrew popped popped in his second from Colin Taggert and Chris. After 21 minutes of action, Neil scored his second from Colin. Both right and left win-; gers manoeuvred the ball SX:- tremely well through the half. The second half saw superb effort by the Uxbridge goal- tender as he constàntly fought off one shot after another. Bowmanville pointed 5 more times. At the 43rd minute mark, Andrew scored, giving him a hat trick and a well deserved rest. Fifty minutes of the game had passed when Chris scored his goal when he picked the ball up from center field and moved in on a breakaway. breakaway. Two minutes later he drove in his second on a pass from Colin. Richard Bateman scored on a shot from 20 yards at the 54 minute mark and goal number nine was off the foot of Brandon Brandon Osmond from left wing. This game was a great confidence confidence booster for the boys. Congratulations to all players for this exciting season opener. CTC Midgets The 1986 edition of the Canadian Tire Midget baseball baseball crew had ' a successful debut on opening day, beating Orono 8-2. Mike Gallont, Chris Hall, David Fairey, Jeff Bartlett Bartlett and Scott Munro shared the pitching duties, giving up a total of 5 hits and 2 runs. David Fairey (1), Kevin Smith (2), Scott Munro (1), Rob Real (2), Mike Lugtenburg (1), and Scott Webster (1) shared the hits. On Sunday, the Canadian Tire Midgets added to their success by taking both ends of a double header in Brockville 7-5 and 6-2. Chris Hall was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out 9, walking four and giving up 8 hits for 5 runs in seven innings. Scott Webster Webster led the hitting with two doubles and one single while Scott Munro added a triple and a single. Mike Gallant and Kevin Smith rounded out the hits with a single each. In the second game, Mike Gallant went the full seven innings, surrendering only two hits and two runs while striking out 3 and giving up 9 bases on balls. Mike also led the way with 3 singles, Jeff Bartlett (2), Scott Webster a double and one single each for Kevin Smith, Mike Smith, Scott Veals and Rob Real. Lakers Lose to Ajax Ajax defeated the Newcastle Newcastle Lakers 10 to 5 in a Senior E.O.B.A. game played at Newcastle Village Park on Sunday afternoon by a score of 10 to 5. Actually the game was very close despite the score. Mark Luxton started on the mound for the Lakers and was relieved by John Robinson in the sixth inning. Mark Luxton who hit a home run in last Sunday's game against Kendal Kendal banged another, home run out of the park on Sunday. Craig Hornby also hit a home run for the Lakers, plus play ing well at third base. Terry Burns started on the mound for Ajax and was the winning pitcher. Allan Farrow, Jeff Edmund- son, ' Kevin Gibson, Scott Michelson, John Robinson and Doug Rickard played well for the Lakers, and Rob Limkilde, Gerry Downes, Pat Rouche, and Steve Thoms were the pick of the winning Ajax team.
