At about 1:30 a.m. a blue Chev was being driven west on Olive Avenue at the intersection of Celina Street, when a yellow Chev Nova which was travelling south on Celina Street, skidded through the intersection hitting the Blue Chev injuring the driver and causing $4,000 damage. June 25, 1986 3 Happy First Birthday Student Heads for Indonesia Indonesia is not what one may call the world's most popular vacationing spot, but for Elizabeth Marchant this trip could be the most memorable experience experience of her life. Leaving for Indonesia with the Canada World Youth organization, 21-year-old Elizabeth will spend three and a half months in the developing country working and learning within the community. DIM AND DISTANT 50 YEARS AGO THURSDAY. JUNE 18th, 1936 A twisted mass of steel and charred wood is all that remains of the Norman Taylor arena after an early morning blaze completely razed the building on King Street, Bowmanville. Firemen battled the stubborn fire four hours, which is believed to have been started by a short circuit in a car in an old farm building next to the arena. Also destroyed were 78 brand new G.M. cars stored in the building. Bowmanville resident Elizabeth Marchant, will be one of the people participating participating in a Canada World Youth exchange in Indonesia. Fifteen years ago this organization, organization, Canada World Youth, was founded to promote promote cultural understanding understanding between Canada and developing developing countries. To date, approximately 36 exchange countries have participated and over 6000 young people from across Canada and the exchange countries have shared the experience. Elizabeth, who is presently presently studying at Carlton University, will be spending spending a total of seven months involved in the exchange. The first half will be a community community situated in northwest northwest Ontario. The second half required her to go to Indonesia. Indonesia. A total of 28 Canadians Canadians and the same number of Indonesians will partici : pate in this particular ex : change. During this time period, Elizabeth will live with a local family and become involved involved in all aspects of the community. The Canada World Youth participants will work for their host community community doing volunteer work in the areas of social services, agriculture, coops, coops, small businesses and community groups. Canada World Youth was founder Jacques Hebert's way of promoting individual individual understanding about one's self and the world around. This program is available available to young people between between the ages of 17 and 20. Beginning July 4, Elizabeth will be attending an orientation seminar where she will meet with the other members of her group. His son Donald found a baby groundhog on Elephant Hill north of Concession St. and visited The Statesman office to display his discovery. Don advised the staff that he plans to keep the woodchuck or groundhog as a pet. The animal certainly was a cute little bundle of fur, but we'll be interested to learn how friendly it will be when it grows up. Dr. John Hendry, 252 King Street East, has given permission to the Bowmanville Recreation Department to use his property, situated 300 feet south of King Street West of Simpson Avenue, for a soccer field. This was announced by Councillor Glenholme Hughes this morning. Don Stutt is the chairman of the Bowmanville Recreation Committee, and the other members- are Councillor Ross Stevens, Councillor Glenholme Hughes, Miss Dora Purdon, the secretary, Paul Chant, Clifford Samis and Claude Kilmer. Doug Rigg is the Recreation Director for Bowmanville. At their regular meeting Tuesday evening, Bowmanville's Kinsmen Club had three international guests and their wives from Germany. The goodwill trip to several Canadian Kin clubs was launched back in 1958 when Kinsmen National President Tom Good of Kingston attended an international convention in Hamburg, Germany. He met Horst Elfe who was national president of their European counterparts, the Round Tables, with 35,000 members in 23 countries, and suggested he should visit Canada sometime. Mr. Elfe replied that he knew Canada quite well, having spent some time here during World War II as a prisoner of war at Bowmanville. While no definite details have yet been released, it is understood that arrangements are almost finalized for the prize-winning Bowmanville Legion Pipe Band to attend the Lions International Convention Convention in Atlantic City, on June 21st. They won first prize of $1,000 expense money at the recent Lions convention in Kingston. DIM AND DISTANT 10 YEARS AGO The Rotary Club of Bowmanville will be hosting a special guest speaker at their regular weekly meeting this Thursday, at the Flying Dutchman. He is the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Canada, the Hon. Kamal N. Bakshi. James H. Ferguson received his B.A.Sc. degree in Engineering Physics from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Toronto, at the graduation exercises held at Convocation Hall, University of Toronto, on Tuesday, May 30th. He is presently employed Wins Speaking Title . Yhè Great Pine Ridge (GPR) Kinsmen club is pleased to say that we are the home club to a champion champion public speaker. This all started when the GPR club held their annual club public. speaking contest. contest. Paul Arsenault was our club winner and was sent to represent our club at Zone level. The GPR club is in Zone 1 which consists of nine clubs in the area.(Ajax, Oshawa, Motor City, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, Manvers, Who- itby, Port Perry, Btooklin and District and the GPR). The Zone public speaking contest was held March 8, 1986 in Oshawa in which seven other clubs were represented. represented. Flying Farmers Prepare Airstrip For Plowing Match Steve Liptay of Bowmanville won the 1976 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship title on June 19 in New Holland, Pennsylvania. Phillip Annis, playing a ukelele, and Stephen Howarth, Bradley Gilpin, Kim Desousa and Tina, Dewey , harmonics, provided music with a country flavour at the Ontario Public Street school's annual variety night. All roads lead to Stirling, 14 miles northeast of Belleville, September 16-20 for the International International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show. But for the Flying Farmers, there's also a bird's eye view awaiting. Two 2,000-foot strips are being prepared to accom- •modafe Flying Farmers one mile north of the Tented City. For those who fly, the strips will be about 10 miles from Stirling VORon the 120-degree radial, three miles north of the village. On request, 80 to 100 octane gas and lights will be provided. This is only the second District award to be bestowed upon the GPR club. Now Kin Paul is on the Canadian National Kinsmen Public Speaking Contest to be held in Saskatoon, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
