( 16 Vf The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. December 17, 1986 BellPeeWee Girls Open Season in Oshawa Christmas in Mexico Is Theme of St. Joseph Breakfast Saturday, Nov. 15th at Harmon Park in Oshawa, the Bell PeeWee girls Toros opened their regular season play in the Oshawa loop in grand style, as they registered their 1st victory of the season. An"impressive victory it was too, as they trounced their opponents 7-2. Unfortunately, the game sheet with the scoring stats didn't find its way to the Bowmanville Dressing Room, so the accuracy of this report may be faulty. The goal scorers are not in question, as Laura Abrams and Joanna Hall each earned a hat-trick, while Lisa Morrison notched the single goal to total 7. Assists were earned by Leeann Somerscales (3), Leanne Floyd (2), Cheryl Cole (2), and Tammy Fowler (2). Sorry if I missed anyone. A week later at Darlington the Bell Girls had a little tougher time of it, but persevered, and notched their 2nd victory of the season by a narrow 5-4 margin. Both teams exchanged goals in the 1st frame with Joanna Hall lighting the scoreboard for Bell's Bombers. Then, in the 2nd period, Cheryl Cole put the PeeWee Toros in front on a goal at 9:43 with the assist going to Laura Abrams. Cheryl was not finished, as she found the mark at 5:18 for her 2nd consecutive goal. This time with the help of Tammy Fowler and Leeann Somerscales. Oshawa reciprocated with 59 seconds left to narrow the gap to 3-2, but Joanna Hall was set-up by Lisa Morrison and Karen Robinson with 9 seconds remaining in the 2nd for her 2nd of the game and restored the 2 goal lead 4-2. Oshawa came on in the 3rd, with 2 more goals, and evened the score at 4. Victory was not to be denied, as Leeann Somerscales clinched the win with 2 minutes and 25 seconds remaining on an unassisted goal. Way to go team! The Bell Toros continued their winning ways on Monday, Nov. 24th at Harmon Park against the 3rd Oshawa Team. This really was no contest, with the Bell group prancing to a 9-0 victory. Laura Abrams and Joanna Hall earned another hat-trick each. Single goals went to Karen Robinson unassisted, Shannon Reid from Kim Duczmalewski and Laura Abrams, and Lisa Morrison from Joanna Hall. Karen Robinson earned 2 assists, and Tricia Ferguson and Leeann Somerscales each earned 1 assist. The shut-out was earned by Angie Taylor, Nov. 29th at Darlington the winning streak continued as NISSAN 1987 TRUCKS 5 YEAR 100,000 km. Oshawa struck first at the 3:42 mark of the 1st frame, but Laura Abrams made short work of their lead as she notched 2 unassisted goals at 3:23 of the first, and 9:37 of the 2nd period. Laura's efforts were followed shortly there after by Leeann Somerscales who found the mark at 7:24 with the assistance of Denise Bugden and Laura Abrams. About 3 minutes lapsed, and then Joanna Hall made her contribution with 2 goals a minute apart, thanks both times to Karen Robinson for setting her up. Oshawa slipped one in late in the 2nd but could do no more. Cheryl Cole rounded out the scoring in the 3rd period with the help of Sarah Ewles. The Bell Toro Peewees notched their 4th consecutive victory with this convincing 6-2 romp over Oshawa. Sat., Dec. 6th saw not only the decline of the Bell winning streak, but also that of the competition with the Oshawa teams. A scheduled game with Oshawa was cancellled, leaving the Bell group without a game Dec. 6th, and that coupled with other organizational organizational problems resulted in Bell's girls opting to leave the Oshawa loop for a more organized set-up with the United Counties Girls' League. Meanwhile however, the Intermediate girls ages 14-20, also had a free hour Dec. 6th, and invited the Peewee Girls to participate in a "Fun" Contest. Fun it was, and the score was no surprise, but the Peewee Bells put on a pretty good show. The Intermediate Girls were 5 goals better as they doubled their younger counterparts 10-5. Joanna Hall and Laura' Adams scored 2 each while Denise Bugden got a single marker. Assists were earned by, Joanna Hall (1), Shannon Reid (2), Cheryl Cole (1), Denise Bugden (1), Karen Robinson (1), Tammy Fowler (1), and Sarah Ewles (1). Sat., Dec. 13th was the Bell Toros' debut in the United Counties League as they hosted Baltimore. A much more competitive game was very entertaining for the fans, as the Bell girls skated well and deserved their 1st victory in their new league. Angie Taylor didn't have many saves to make, but the ones she did make were impressive and very instrumental in preserving her shut-out. At the other end, it was Joanna Hall who proved her markmanship with 2 well-placed shots. Joanna was set-up each time by good team effort on the part of Lisa Morrison and Cheryl Cole and also by Karen Robinson and Tammy Fowler. Laura Abrams lit the score board once on a fine effort with Leeann Somerscales and Shannon Reid contributing an assist each. Sun. Dec. 14th at Bewdley the Bell girls realized that they are now in a competitive League and have to skate hard for 3 periods to earn victory. This unfortunately did not happen in Bewdley as some slack time resulted in Bewdley's Amy Smith taking advantage for 4 unanswered goals. Prior to this lapse a good team effort had the Bell Toros in the lead 2-1. Laura Abrams found the mark early in the 1st on a nice set-up by Kim Duczmalewski. Bewdley evened the score about midway into the 1st, but Joanna Hall's unassisted effort with 1:50 remaining in that period put the Bell bunch back in the lead. The aforementioned lapse went into effect early in the 2nd period and was the eventual downfall of the Toros as they were not able to recoup, and suffered this 5-2 loss. But not to worry girls, learn from misfortunes such as this, and future success shall be'yours. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Bell Toro PeeWee girls to wish all the parents, coaching staff, staff members of the Canadian Statesman, and Orma Lyttle of Bell Canada a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and a big thanks for everyone's support.
