18 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, December 17,1986 Waverley Public School News 1ER IT'S NEW - by Michael Pot It was pizza day in the gym at Waverley Public School on Tuesday, December 9 for the student's enjoyment. They had Square Boy pizza with sauce, cheese and pepperoni. To drink there was a choice of white milk, chocolate milk and orange juice. The students received this by lining up in the front hall. The parent volunteers handed out the pizza and for dessert the parents made cupcakes for us. During recess we saw two movies "Ghostbusters" and "Legend". We all hope the students at Waverley enjoyed pizza day. DECK THE HALLS OF WAVERLEY - by Jason Moore If you think the stores are busy with people getting ready for Christmas, you should see the teachers and students at Waverley. Everywhere you look Christmas decorations cover the walls, windows, doors and some even hang from the ceiling. The art work ranges from paper snowflakes to Christmas scenes including Santa and his reindeer. The true meaning of Christmas is displayed in some class rooms with nativity scenes and stained glass windows made from tissue paper. Every year there is a large Christmas tree placed in front of the office. Different classes decorate the tree with paper chains, angels and ornaments. The classes are singing Christmas carols and different tunes in preparation for the Christmas concert. Poems and stories about Christmas are also being written by the children. Everyone here at Waverley Public School would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas! Workshop Will Discuss Impact by Rob Savage Town councillors and Hydro officials will be holding holding a workshop in January to discuss the full impact of the completion of construction construction at the Darlington Generating Station. • At a meeting of the Hydro Liaison Committee last Friday, Friday, a motion was passed to arrange a lengthy meeting on Jan. 23 to look at the financial financial affect that the town will feel when construction workers are laid off. And while it's not known what resolutions will be reached at that time, what is known is that 10 per cent ,of the town's population moved to the area as a result result of the project. In a report to the liaison committee, Senior Community Community Studies Planner J. A. Michael Hanley said statistics, statistics, from July 1986 show 597 construction workers have moved to the town to work at Darlington. That's 90 more than were working on the project in January of 1986 and 228 more than were at the site in July of 1985. Throughout the region, 35 per cent of the construction workers at the project have moved to local municipalities. municipalities. Community Relations Officer Officer Suzanne Stickley says more than 2,000 people are living in the Town of Newcastle Newcastle as a result of construction construction when consideration consideration is given for the number of family members that moved here with the workers. workers. Ms. Stickley adds that figures figures used to determine the amount of impact money going to the town are mostly based on the number of people who moved to the area. She said the town will be less.affected by the number of workers who will be laid off but will remain in the area. For the meeting in January, January, she said her staff would present estimates of how many people intend to stay in the area once the project is completed. New Program For Caregivers Paul Tuttle, Executive Director of Durham Region Community Care Association announced that Ministry of Community and Social Services has agreed to fund the Caregiver Relief Program. This innovative service will provide temporary time-out to caregivers of frail elderly persons. The main focus of caregiver relief will be to relieve the stress of the primary caregiver. Hopefully by doing so, we will delay the need for Institutionalization. : i ■ ' ' ' - ' . ' ' t ' - : • • . ' ' • ■ ' ! ■ llfi . ; : 1 I II : .. ■ ■ : |- . '|§ Ï>SS fill © ;r 0 SiB! >.'■ .
