Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, December 17,1986 5 Wesley ville by E. Barrowclough Sunday morning's light snowfall made driving a little little precarious butthe usual congregation made it to Welcome United Church, on Sunday morning, Dec. 7th. This was the second Sunday of Advent and the Graham family conducted that service. John and Peggie Peggie read the scripture and led in prayer. Daughter Mary lit the candle and relit the first one with a little assistance. assistance. Baby Jeff was a silent silent partner in the group while his twin brother Kenneth Kenneth opted for a brief nap in the family pew. Rev. Sedgwick, on the previous Sunday, had spoken to the children of light and of how powerless the dark was to overcome it. To remember Jesus is the light of the world, with Mr. Sedgwick leading, children and the whole congregation repeated repeated the first two verses °Vi?e 11 tbpic of the sermon was: "To find the kingdom, turn around." The simple and deep faith of little children children is lost too often as years lengthen and we grow careless of keeping our contact contact with God, allowing the material things and some unlovely habits of the world to take over our mind. It is good to look back and recall the wonder of Christ's birth S.ny the love of God shown through parents and friends at that season. Instead Instead of the choir's usual anthem, a beautiful duet, "Be Peace on Earth" was sung by Barbara Croft and Brenda Ough accompanied by Stephen Croft at the piano. The offering was received received by Allin Osborne and Ron Angus. Poinsettias in two colours were the floral offering at each side of the church. Congratulations to local ladies who won prizes at the Old Tyme Christmas contest for making teddy bears. Marcella Vallerica of Welcome Welcome won first, Lorraine Clarke, formerly of Morrish, was second and Cathy Beckett Beckett of Morrish was third. The congregation at Welcome Welcome Church is welcomed each Sunday by the shining appearance of the front doors. These have been recently recently refinished by "The Strippers," R.R.3 Port Hope, and the generous workman returned his cheque as a donation to the White Gift Offering. Gloria Young and two daughters of Toronto, spent the weekend of November 30th with her parents, Carroll and June Nichols. The ladies finished the work-of-art quilt on Friday afternoon. On the previous day where they worked at Willow Beach, one of Nature's Nature's tragedies happened, A small old squaw duck had been seen floating offshore for a couple of days but attempts attempts at rescue failed until Thursday morning, when Willie Wynn was able to get it. With advice from naturalists he did his best to save it by cleaning off the oil with which it was covered, covered, but it was too late, it died while it was being cleaned. A small duck with pointed wings and narrow tail, it spends its winters near, or on the Great lakes, and summers in the Arctic. Another cooking school session was held at Welcome Welcome Church on Thursday, December 4th. Marion Bam- sey and Florence Keeler had taken a course given by the Institute at Bowman- ville, and passed on the knowledge they had acquired acquired to the 12 ladies present present at Welcome. This was a second day of the school, the previous one was held in Port Hope. Kay Thorndyke arrived home on Thursday after spending some time with daughter Linda at Waterloo. Waterloo. She has been busy "helping" in several households, households, at daughter Sharon's in Bowmanvillc where a quilt was in the frames and before that, spent some time as company for sister- in-law Ruby Flett at Fene- lon Falls.
