s i 2 The Canadian Stâtcsman, Bowmanville, December 22, 1986 Program Aims ; At Upgrading Ontario Basic Skills, a program aimed at helping ' adults primarily over 25 years of age adapt to the changing world of work, is now accepting eligible students at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough, Lindsay and Cobourg. A successor to the Technical Upgrading Program (TUP), Ontario Basic Skills is a new initiative introduced by the Ontario Ministry of Skills Development as part of The Ontario Training Strategy. Ontario's new approach to training was announced in late September by Ontario Minister of Education Gregory Sorbara. "Ontario Basic Skills offers three components to prepare trainees to enter non- traditional employment or skills training," said Bud Robertson, Sir Sandford Fleming College Senior Adult Training Officer. "These include academic upgrading; job search skills and training readiness preparation. Career goal exploration and aptitude testing are included in the latter." "The program is flexible to adapt to individual needs," he continued. "Trainees may continue upgrading through other sponsorship upon completion of the program." "Mathematics, communications communications and the sciences are the major focus of the academic component," said Robertson, "Computer literacy is an important area in the 'hands-on' training section, and vocational subjects such as electronics, welding and carpentry will be added in the Spring. A literacy program is also being developed." "Students may take one or more components, depending on their requirements," he added. Ontario Basic Skills offers a training readiness component and free tuition, books and supplies to ease the transition for adults returning to school. Some trainees may be eligible to receive allowances to partially cover costs of childcare, transportation and relocation of accommodation. The program operates full-time or part-time during the day and part-time in the evenings... "By creating training opportunities such as Ontario Basic Skills, the Ministry is responding to a need to overcome training barriers and assist people in job entry," said Robertson.
